The new system, which is capable of synthesising drugs and other chemicals in economically relevant volumes, ?shines in isolated environments and allows for the decentralisation of the production of fine chemicals,? according to Professor Noël. ?The mini-plant is based on the concept of photochemistry, using sunlight to directly ?power? the chemical synthesis. We employ a photocatalyst, a chemical species that drives the synthesis when illuminated,? Noël continues. ?Normally powerful LEDs or other lighting equipment are used for the illumination, but we choose to use sunlight. For starters, this renders the synthesis fully sustainable. But it also enables stand-alone operation in remote locations. Our dream is to see our system used at a base on the Moon or on Mars, where self-sustaining systems are needed to provide energy, food and medicine. Our mini-plant could contribute to this in a fully autonomous, independent way.?

A solar-driven flow reactor

Development of the mini-plant started around five years ago when the Noël research group ? at the time based at Eindhoven University of Technology -developed a ?solar concentrator?. This is essentially a sheet of transparent plastic with micrometre-sized channels in which the chemical synthesis takes place. By adding dedicated dyes, the researchers developed the plastic into a solar guide and luminescent convertor. It captures sunlight and directs it towards the channels, while converting a substantial part of the light into red photons that drive the chemical conversion.

The next step was to turn the concentrator into a fully operational flow reactor. ?This means we pump a reaction mixture of starting materials and photocatalyst through the sunlit channels,? says Noël. ?The desired chemical conversion takes places in these channels so that they are, in fact, our alternative to the traditional chemical synthesis flasks or vessels.? Noël goes on to explain that even though the channels are quite tiny, such a ?flow reactor? can produce quite relevant outputs since it operates from sunrise to sunset in a continuous manner. ?What?s more,? he adds, ?the use of channels allows for a far more effective coupling between light and chemistry than is possible when using traditional flask reactors.?

Maximum efficiency

The Noël research group had already demonstrated the solar flow reactor concept by synthesising a range of medicinally relevant molecules, albeit on a laboratory scale in a controlled environment. Now, in their recent paper in ChemSusChem, they describe how they developed a viable, optimally effective autonomous photosynthesis system and employed it in field tests. They also provide an outlook on aspects such as application potential and economic performance.

The prototype solar flow reactor now covers an area of about 0.25 square metres. To make it fully autonomous, the researchers equipped it with a solar cell that provides the power for auxiliaries such as pumps and the control system. This solar cell is placed behind the flow reactor in a stacked configuration that ensures maximum efficiency per square centimetre, according to Noël. ?The more energetic wavelengths are used in the reactor to drive the photocatalyst. The remaining photons with wavelengths of 600-1100 nm are converted to electricity to drive the auxiliaries.?

Worldwide application potential

The fully autonomous prototype also employs a responsive control system that can optimise the chemical conversion at various light intensities. ?When a cloud covers the sun the chemical conversion would normally decrease very rapidly,? Noël says. ?Our system is able to make the necessary adjustments in real time. Field tests confirmed that it is able to churn out chemicals at a constant rate even on days that are a mixture of sunny and cloudy.? The tests were carried out in the Netherlands. To get an impression of the global deployment possibilities, comparisons were made using solar data at locations in Norway (North Cape), Spain (Almeria) and Australia (Townsville). Noël: ?Even at the North Cape, with relatively little sun power, we estimate satisfactory production figures.?

The researchers also compared the performance of the prototype system with production figures for the well-known photochemical synthesis of rose oxide. This product for the perfume industry is industrially produced by photochemical means because it is cleaner and more efficient than traditional chemical synthesis. The researchers calculated that a surprisingly small surface area would be required for their system to meet current annual demand ? just 150 m2 would suffice. Noël: ?That?s just one factory roof full of our mini-plants! The system cost would be similar to current commercial photosynthesis systems. But we only need solar energy so there are no energy expenditures. So this really could be a sustainable strategy for future production of chemicals such as rose oxide or pharmaceuticals.?

Have the walls make chemicals

Noël believes that his group?s research refutes any scepticism about the potential of solar-powered chemical technology: ?We demonstrate that there are opportunities for solar-driven chemical production even here in the Netherlands. You don?t have to go to Qatar!? What?s more, the system lends itself to application in unexpected locations. ?You could even cover the facade of a building. Of course the output would then be smaller than when the system is placed at an optimal angle to the sun. But it certainly is possible ? and how cool would it be to have the walls make chemicals!?

In contemporary music, it is very rare for two composers to sign the same score. This was the case, at the turning point of the years 1990-2000, of the German Helmut Oehring and his partner Iris ter Schiphorst, but this practice remains exceptional. We are therefore surprised to see two names – Frédéric Blondy and Arthur Lavandier – respond to the music ofIn the heart of the ocean, premiered on October 15 at the Théâtre de l’Athénée in Paris.

The first, a multi-instrumentalist inclined to multidisciplinarity, has a taste for extraordinary expression. The second, a 34-year-old composer already author of three operas, is also a follower of projects that move the lines, since he regularly collaborates with the unclassifiable ensemble Le Balcon, which precisely ensures the orchestral contribution, sometimes enhanced by electronics, of the new work.

We therefore expect the unheard of and, in this regard, we will not be disappointed. Presented by the Lille Opera Hors les Murs in partnership with La Muse en Circuit (national center for musical creation), In the heart of the ocean is akin to an essay of scenic art, rather than lyrical, which mixes fairground theater, cutting-edge video and experimental music, for ninety minutes of unequal interest.

Halory Goerger’s catch-all booklet – which also signs a staging devoid of a guiding line – tells the unlikely story of six people hired by an oligarch to found the first marine colony in unspecified abyss and operate a “Precious deposit”.

Decibel race

If English is the majority, German and French also serve as a launching pad for a voice of astonishing richness. Like Audrey Chen (the biologist), whose song seems to multiply incantations of Inuit origin, Han Buhrs (the oceanographer), with a literally ?guttu-rale? palette, and Ute Wassermann ( the geologist), which makes her mouth the equivalent of a concrete music studio, all the characters in the plot (the captain of Claire Bergerault, the entrepreneur of Alex Nowitz and the diver of Isabelle Duthoit) have a real voice signature.

Eloquent and disturbing by its sprawling nature.

“Podkarpacie has become a field of technology in three dimensions – […] aviation, automotive industry and in the IT dimension “- indicated the president of the Podkarpackie Innovation Center, Jacek Kubrak, in a statement for Space24.pl during the September Economic Forum in Karpacz. The head of PCI was one of the participants of a discussion panel devoted entirely to the subject of the space industry. “RIS, or the Regional Intelligent Specialization of our voivodeship, is aviation and cosmonautics” – noted the president of Kubrak, referring to the technological and organizational values ??of the Podkarpacie region in the area of ??the space industry. Further, the topics of the development of innovation in this voivodeship and plans of local involvement in sectoral activities, and even in space exploration itself, in the coming years were also discussed.

?We have some kind of tradition in building large, complex industrial structures consisting of […] companies that are able to create unique value chains, delivering at the end something that is a semi-finished product “- said the president of PCI, Jacek Kubrak, at the beginning of a conversation at the Space24 studio, during the Economic Forum in Karpacz (September 7-9, 2021) . One of the sessions held as part of this event was the space panel, which was also attended by the head of the Podkarpackie Innovation Center.

During the conversation in the studio, Jacek Kubrak commented on more broadly, inter alia, to one of the main challenges facing the Polish space sector today – the shortage of human capital and skilled engineering workers. In addition to drawing attention to the still relatively short history of dynamic development of this market segment in Poland (associated with the accession to the European Space Agency – in 2012), the president of PCI also emphasized the role of specific requirements of such advanced technical activities.

Investments in the space industry require large capital expenditures – it is not a simple investment “in an app” that will be sold and multiplied.

Investing […] in the hardware and software industry, such as the space industry, requires an appropriate approach and this approach [w Polsce] is just taking shape.

The President of Kubrak noted that the situation in terms of the influx of qualified employees to the market could improve with the strengthening of the position of Polish space companies, increasing the number of university technology majors and launching appropriate support mechanisms. The head of PCI distinguished at this point the expected start of the ESA BIC incubator, which is to operate in Podkarpacie to facilitate the start of seed companies on the space market.

Regarding the obligations of universities towards the space economy, the president of Kubrak referred to the example of the Rzeszów University of Technology, which saw the need to create directions strictly related to space engineering. He also emphasized that such action should be national and common at technical universities.

Another method of increasing the availability of human resources indicated by the head of PCI is to use the experience and resources of the aviation sector, which has a particularly rich tradition and achievements in Podkarpacie. “We hope that we will soon transform competences in other areas in which Podkarpacie has shown that it can [dzia?a?]”- he pointed.

At the end of the conversation, the president of PCI spoke successively about the projects carried out by and with the participation of the Podkarpackie Innovation Center. Here was a reference, among others to plans to launch three nanosatellites in the near future, which are to be able to conduct various types of experiments and send data to Earth.

From the reanimated hand reaching out of a desecrated grave to the lifeless, staggering gait, zombie tropes have definitely not gone out of fashion. Let?s face it, zombie movies are filmed by the dozen these days, but there are classics scattered across numerous streaming sites, and we?ve dug them up so you don?t have to.

If there is one thing Cho Il-hyung gets right with this picture, it?s the sheer realness he brings to a ?not-so-real? situation. There is no precision ass-whooping or other forms of badassery, just humans fumbling their way through a zombie-infested apartment building, holding on for their dear lives. Stuck indoors in the middle of a zombie outbreak, Jon-woo (Yoo Ah-in) reacts to his predicament with fear, uncertainty, and an expected sense of dread. On the verge of ending it all, he discovers that there is another survivor in the neighborhood, and the two team up to make it out alive. While it may not be the otherworldly, action-packed zombie movie people are used to these days, it is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat.

One of the newest movies on this list, Zack Snyder?s 2021 release brings together various genre elements to get the ball rolling; at the forefront, zombies and heists. The latter should not come as a surprise since the movie is set in the land of the best heists, Las Vegas. With most of the city?s population infected, the undead are placed under quarantine with a handful of survivors boxed in. Years after living in the middle of a zombie-infested wasteland becomes the new normal, Scott Ward (Dave Bautista) is approached with an offer he can’t refuse (even in the middle of a zombie apocalypse): to steal a fortune locked away in the apocalyptic wasteland before it gets nuclear-bombed out of existence. From the intense team-assembling montage to the journey into the heart of the zombie territory, the plot does play right into a few zombie-apocalypse tropes. However, it?s just the fast-paced, action, and emotion-packed picture you?d want to soak in on movie night, with all of Snyder?s signature cinematic style. Plus, two words: zombie tiger.

If one thing is evident, it’s that Cargo challenges the status quo when it comes to what we’ve come to expect from zombie pictures. With a 48-hour window for humans to go rabid after infection, this 1 hour, 45-minute movie follows a father’s plight to deliver his infant daughter to safety before the virus completely takes him over. Though it doesn’t stray too far from the norm (there’s still the usual ?survival of the fittest? vibe) it does lend a more sympathetic eye to the undead and reframes the emotional impact of the zombie apocalypse through its unique set-up. So, if you’re in it for a more heartfelt vibe, this is a top pick.

Looking for something light that the whole family can get in on? ParaNorman fits the bill in more ways than one. Here, the spotlight is on Norman Babcock (voiced by Kodi Smit-McPhee) who is not your ordinary 11-year old boy. Besides the fact that he can commune with ghosts, he feels like an outcast in a town he eventually has to save. What makes it such a wholesome watch is how it explores grey areas by drifting away from the usual battle between good and evil. And yes, there are old-timey zombies to sweeten the deal. Altogether, it brings to the surface lessons of acceptance, forgiveness, and the power of optimism that is perfect for all ages.

Fans of the Kingdom series will be positively thrilled by what Kingdom: Ashin of the North is dishing out. Set long before the events of the former, Kingdom: of Ashin North offers insight into Ashin’s life that we never knew we needed. To some, she’s just an obscure, evil, and mysterious character that pops up towards the end of season Kingdom season 2. An origin story of sorts, this movie explores what fueled her anger against the Kingdom of Joseon, causing her to unleash zombies by using the infamous resurrection plant. It’s an interesting take of a coming-of-age story, packed with violence, raw emotion, and strategy.

Part zombie movie, part socio-political statement, David Freyne offers a fresh take on zombiism by calling it the Maze Virus. Set in the aftermath of the outbreak, humanity attempts to rebuild itself and even administers a vaccine that works on 75% of the infected population. Naturally, this creates a further division between the uninfected, cured, and the infected, which makes for some uncomfortable dynamics. In a wake of uncertainty, underground resistance groups begin to form, triggering governmental intervention. A bit slower than your average zombie horror, this is a thought-provoking picture flanked with violence and gore.

Let?s start off by saying that this is not your run-of-the-mill zombie movie ? it?s light, quirky, yet action-packed in the right measure. While volunteering on his nephew?s field trip, Dave (Alexander England) ends up having to fight for his life alongside a kindergarten teacher (Lupita Nyong’o) and an annoying children’s TV personality (Josh Gad). Unfortunately, fate has it that zombies escape from a testing facility nearby, making a beeline for the farm where the kids are indulging in some field-trip-related fun. There are a bunch of hitches along the way which deliver a comic and bizarre take to an outrightly horrific situation. What a gem in the rough!

Get set for a rollercoaster of emotions, with energy levels stuck at 100% throughout the entirety of the movie. Set in Great Britain, a zombie-like virus called ?Rage? is unleashed on the masses causing total destruction and anarchy. In line with the movie title, 28 Days Later, (former) bicycle courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) awakens and is lurched into a fight for his life alongside other survivors. Throughout the entirety of the movie, there is the nagging question of ?will they survive?? seared into the minds of the viewers. To spell it out, this 1-hour 53-minute movie is positively terrifying (if that?s a thing).

Leaning more toward gags than blood and gore, I Was a Teenage Zombie brings in some much-needed laughter to the genre. Heralding the ever-so-catchy zombie romantic comedy trend that sprung up in the ?80s and ?90s, think of this low-budget production as an ode to a simpler time. After a drug deal ends with the dealer at the bottom of a toxic lake, the teens responsible create a zombie of their own to contend with the one they initially unleashed on their town (yup, a typical case of stoner vs. dealer). What could possibly go wrong?

Zombie movie fiends assemble! Night of the Living Dead is not just any zombie movie, it’s considered the mother of all modern zombie movies, directed by the so-called Godfather of Zombies, George A. Romero. This 1968 independent production is packed with tons of elements that contemporary movies have mimicked over the years. Here’s the gist, a group of strangers must band together to survive a full-on zombie attack, but the question is, will their differences let them? From the abandoned house in the ?middle of nowhere? to the unruly group dynamic, this picture gives you that authentic zombie feel, and it set an incredibly high bar for lacing in social commentary – a favorite of zombie storytellers – from the get-go.

In a brilliant mash of blood, gore, and all-around silliness, Return of the Living Dead embodies everything a good ?ol fashioned horror-comedy should be. The storyline is simple and potent, following the events that unravel after two clumsy employees at a medical supply warehouse inadvertently cause a zombie outbreak in Louisville, Kentucky. Though it’s light and hearty, gear up for a few good scares along the way, along with its signature punk rock vibes.

Most horror movie fans already know that the 2019 version of Rabid is a remake of David Cronenberg?s production under the same title. If you haven’t seen it yet, then this movie is bound to give you some insight into what inspired the Soska sisters. The narrative itself focuses on a woman who wakes up with an insatiable bloodlust after being involved in a motorcycle accident. Her victims transform into mindless zombie-like creatures who spread the infection throughout Montreal. An intelligent, horror-packed piece, the movie explores various themes, with that touch of unbridled terror you signed up for.

As if medical school wasn?t hard enough, a group of students seeking a fun getaway in the Norwegian mountains is faced with the worst kind of zombies ? the Nazi kind. For an hour and 31 minutes, expect high-energy and brutal scenes that may read as a tad too gory for some. However, it is a perfect watch if you?re looking for something that shamelessly sinks its teeth into the best horror tropes out there.

This iconic piece may not be your go-to movie for screams, but it hits the spot in more ways than one. Altogether, the main culprit here is vanity and the ways it drives people over the edge. After losing her fiance to her frenemy, Madeline Ashton (Meryl Streep), Helen Sharp (Goldie Hawn) is driven to insanity. However, she comes back with a vengeance, debuting her new book alongside a banging new look. In a desperate bid to ?keep up appearances? Madeline visits a mysterious rejuvenation specialist who offers her an elixir of youth. There?s just one catch ? she ends up joining the ranks of the undead. With bodies they literally had to die for, both ladies are forced to work together to preserve their ill-gotten youth.

If any movie should take the cup for turning people off secluded cabins, it’s Cabin in the Woods. This meta production is your typical ?group of friends get massacred in the middle of nowhere movie – until it?s not. There is a lot more than meets the eye that even the viewers are not fully in on at first. For one, the horrific creatures (including zombies) unleashed on the group are manipulated by some sadistic scientists behind the scenes, but the reason why is as surprising as it is engaging. Tied up with ancient rituals and the impending end of the world, the progression here is worth the hour and 35 minutes you?ll spend on this movie.

Bottom line, he wakes up in her house the next day and is not just confronted with evidence of a party gone wild, the streets of Paris are overrun by zombies. Managing to barricade himself inside the apartment complex, only time can tell what he loses first; his life or his mind.

It took a while for audiences to catch up with this one, but like fine wine, Dead & Buried only gets better with age. Set in a quaint, coastal town confronted with one grisly murder after the other, Sherriff Dan Gillis (James Farentino) discovers that the town coroner (Jack Albertson) has been pulling the strings all along. As the body count rises, the coroner adds more ammo to his zombie arsenal. The question here is, can one man take down a whole town of zombies?

Dance of the Dead merges teen angst and a thirst for brains in the most tasteful way possible. In other words, though there are some pretty off-the-hook death scenes, it is not as gory as some of the options on this list. In this picture, the fates of the students at a high school prom depend on the misfits who couldn?t land dates. With reanimated corpses swarming into town from the cemetery nearby, it?s a matter of time before the teens are forced to work together to stay alive. If you can look past the obvious budget constraints, the commitment to character development is worth it.

The first feature-length film of its kind, the 1931 movie White Zombie, plays to the strengths of its main character, Bela Lugosi. As Murder Legendre, the zombie master of Haiti, he strikes a deal with, Charles Beaumont (Robert Frazer), an affluent plantation owner vying for Madeline Short?s (Madge Bellamy) affection. The thing is, her wedding is a few days away, so at the time it’s pretty logical to turn her into his zombie bride (or is it?) In a not-so-unexpected twist, Murder has plans of his own ? plans that Madeline?s fiancee intends to thwart. It’s old-timey, zany, and dark in all the right ways.

Unarguably, Survival of the Dead is not his best work, yet George A. Romero always had it when it comes to gore-filled narratives. In a hellish new reality where zombies have overrun the world, Sarge Crockett (Alan Van Sprang) and his men roam the countryside surviving by the day. Naturally, it’s a huge relief when they discover they can find refuge on Plum Island. There is only one threat to their newfound safety ? a giant family feud caused by zombies (face to hand).

Naturally, it’s a huge relief when they discover they can find refuge on Plum Island. There is only one threat to their newfound safety ? a giant family feud caused by zombies (face to hand).

Learn how to make sausage and cheesecakes

Breakfast is, without a doubt, the most important meal, precisely for this reason finding varied recipes is essential to start the day. From there, we selected the step by step of the cheese and sausage dumplings to innovate in your menu simply and quickly.

recipe ingredients

1 puff pastry bar;

1 packet of sausage;

2 beaten eggs

½ cup grated mozzarella cheese;

3 tablespoons of chives cut into small pieces.

Step by step cheese and sausage dumplings

Learn the recipe for cheesecakes and sausage for your Sunday (Photo: iStock)

First, you should leave the oven preheated to a temperature of approximately 200º C. Meanwhile, place all the puff pastry on a flat surface where you should cut small circles.

Then, with the help of a previously greased muffin tin, place each circle as a base and fit into the mold. However, at the time of assembly, it will be necessary not to put filling in all the pieces because some will serve as a cookie lid.

At the same time, in a skillet with a little olive oil, cook the sausages until lightly browned. Dry the fat and cut into small pieces that will be distributed in each of the pieces.

Then, in a small bowl, combine the eggs, cheese and spring onions until they are completely integrated. Then transfer to each mold with a spoon.

Finally, place in the preheated oven until golden, which takes approximately 13 to 15 minutes. Close each portion with the lids made previously.

Recipe consumption suggestion

Finally, our recipe consumption suggestion for cheese and sausage dumplings is that they are accompanied with your favorite drinks, such as: coffee, natural juice, tea or any other similar item. In addition, if you are looking for an even stronger and more complete flavor, we recommend using cherry tomatoes and a little oregano.

½ cup grated mozzarella cheese;

3 tablespoons of chives cut into small pieces.

A team led by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and National Cancer Institute (NCI) scientists announce today in Science Advances that they?ve discovered why doctors aren?t seeing high rates of T cell lymphomas ? or cancers of the immune system ? in patients living with HIV.

?We seem to have explained some of the mystery of why HIV is rarely the direct cause of cancer,? said co-lead author John Mellors, M.D., who holds the Endowed Chair for Global Elimination of HIV and AIDS at Pitt. ?Our investigation showed that it requires a very unusual series of events involving changes in both HIV and additional mutations in human genes for someone with HIV to develop lymphoma. Clinicians should always screen their patients for cancer as part of routine health care, but people with HIV do not need to fear that they will inevitably develop lymphomas.?

When HIV enters the body, it seeks out T cells and inserts its genetic sequence ? called the ?provirus? ? into the cell?s DNA. This effectively hijacks the T cells, which normally patrol the body in search of foreign pathogens, instead instructing them to produce more HIV.

Previous research by the NCI and Pitt teams discovered that the provirus can insert itself into the T cells? genetic code in a place that prompts these infected cells to grow into large, noncancerous clones of themselves and, in some instances, these clones can carry complete, infectious proviruses. Such clones are called ?repliclones? because they carry a replication-competent provirus. It isn?t necessarily the goal of the virus to induce the growth of repliclones; it?s just the result of where the provirus happened to insert itself in the T cell?s genetic code.

These prior discoveries gave rise to a paradox: If HIV can integrate into T cell oncogenes (genes involved in normal cell division that, when mutated, result in cancerous cell growth), then shouldn?t it also cause lymphoma?

To answer this question, the team obtained samples from 13 HIV patients with lymphoma and picked out three that had high levels of HIV proviruses, indicating that the virus might be implicated in the cancer formation.

They then examined those samples to learn where the provirus had inserted into the T cell DNA. This painstaking analysis revealed that when the HIV provirus inserts into a gene called STAT3 or STAT3 and another gene called LCK, it can prompt cells with those proviruses to activate cell proliferation. With additional nonviral mutations in other human genes, this can result in T cell lymphomas.

?This is a complicated, multistep process that requires rare events ? insertion into STAT3 or STAT3 and LCK genes in just the right spot ? to even begin,? said Mellors, who also is chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at UPMC. ?As a physician, I am reassured that these events are rare. Although we need to be aware of the potential for HIV to cause lymphomas, it?s such a rare occurrence that there is no need for heightened anxiety, yet.?

Because people with HIV are living longer due to advances in medication and care, there are more years in which mutations could accumulate in host genes. When that is coupled with the effects of proviruses already inserted in oncogenes, the frequency of lymphoma could increase over time, Mellors noted. So far, this has not been observed. Nevertheless, the research team stressed the importance of additional studies to assess the role that HIV medications may play in preventing T cell lymphomas, coupled with continued surveillance for T cell lymphomas in people with HIV.

Andréa H. was married to a metal musician

There is a wild life behind Andréa H. In the 1990s she became known as a singer in the gothic scene and performed at festivals in Germany. She wrote books and was fascinated by esotericism and the witch cult. Her stage name was derived from this: “Nebelhexe”.

Years ago she left her old life behind and emigrated to Norway. She married the metal musician Samoth (bourgeois Tomas H.), a star of the scene who appeared several times at the legendary Wacken Festival. According to BILD information, the two should have separated more than 15 years ago.
