This phobia can be somewhat contradictory for his followers, since it is not understood how he can look so happy in his photos at sea and suffer from this variation of zoophobia. This phobia, in general, is usually suffered after going through some traumatic events that have involved the presence of fish, such as stings, attacks and bites. Generally, the first episodes related to this phobia usually appear in childhood, but it can develop at any age.

In many cases, direct contact with the fish is not necessary to develop this fearSince some movies, series, documentaries and television shows can be so shocking that they can directly affect the person causing this phobia. Also, the bad reputation of some fish can cause this fear, for example: Piranhas, puffer fish or barracudas.

Experts indicate that people who suffer from this type of phobia usually avoid any environment where they can find fishThis includes: beaches, rivers, lakes and oceans. Apparently, Rihanna has managed very well not to sacrifice one of her favorite places for the presence of these marine animals.

It is necessary to mention that, in Rihanna’s case, ichthyophobia is caused by schools of fish or by direct contact with them in an aquatic environment. The singer has no problem including fish in her daily diet, in fact, fresh fish is one of the favorite foods of the Barbadian and she usually consumes it regularly.. Eating “her fears” is probably not one of the most professional practices to overcome her phobia, but it seems to work for her.

This disorder is considered an unusual phobia and it is classified in the fourth edition of the Manual of Statistical Diagnosis of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association as an excessive fear. Along with Rihanna, English footballer Peter Grant also suffers from this phobia.

Clueless He is turning 25 and his legacy in comedy and fashion still continues. The film was a pioneer when it comes to comedies that take place in North American high schools, being highly influential for later adolescent comedies such as Mean Girls (2004).

Released in 1995, this is another of those films that, out of guilty pleasure, critics and viewers turn it into a cult film. The ninth fashion, as Beverly Hills as grunge, was planted as a trend and surpassed the screens of the cinemas to be in magazines, on catwalks and on the street.

Alicia Silverstone is the protagonist: Cher, a rich girl, popular and dissatisfied with her life but brimming with optimism towards others. To each scene, Cher teaches fashion, style, and a lovable lack of common sense. An excellent distraction enters Cher’s life, Tai, played by a young woman Brittany Murphy, to whom she is going to do an “extreme make over” so that she can conquer the boy she loves.

The story is based on the novel Emma by Jane Austen and her director, Amy Heckerling, originally thought of it as a series. By rejection of FOX, the script was directed as a feature film from Paramount, with Austen’s story adapted to Generation X.

Clueless is a film brimming with pop and novelty energy, with garish colors, eccentric textures and daring combinations. All of this was due, in large part, to Mona May, the costume director. The soundtrack was also an unmistakable hallmark of the film, with tracks from Beastie Boys, Radiohead, The Muffs, Supergrass, Counting Crows, among others. The existence of this soundtrack and the spirit of time related the film to MTV, which functioned as a strong promotional platform.

Movies like Clueless They penetrate deeply into the culture not so much because of their cinematographic quality, which does not obscure any member of the great cinephile circles, but because they mark a generation and become milestones in terms of narrative formulas, characters that create stereotypes and inheritances that allow new ways to make movies. The legacy of Clueless resides in the iconic of his choices: fashion, the protagonist, music and a generational feeling.

This is a film for teenagers, that’s why a wide range of characters and situations always appears. In these Yankee high school stories, the school becomes like a bubble, a micro-society that applies its own rules and codes with its own language. Clueless has many of those things, for example Cher’s constant catchphrase: “As, if” which in Mean Girls will be conceived as “So fetch”.

In these films, adults are always a world of bored people who get in the way of teenagers’ plans, subjects who seem to understand nothing of what is happening; the codes that prevail are those of the young. Virginity, love, future, fashion, are the themes that matter to this representation of Yankee Generation X.

25 years after its launch, Clueless It is comfortably located among the cult films of the 90s. It is a film of girls at the forefront, which focuses on their experiences and sows a path that today is consistent with current diversities and problems, but that lays the foundations of a space in the cinema for adolescents of the 90s and now nostalgic adults.

Friday, December 3 is a dark day for Chinese companies listed in the United States: after the announcement of the departure of Didi Chuxing, who is leaving Wall Street under pressure from Beijing, the major Chinese stocks have all unscrewed. In the wake of the Chinese leader in VTC Didi, which fell by 20%, Alibaba lost 11%, Baidu, 11.5%, JD.com, 6.5%, and Pinduoduo, 5%. On the Nasdaq, the Golden Dragon China Index, which tracks companies exposed to China, plunged 9.1% on Friday. Its worst performance since the 2008 crisis. Investors fear that Didi’s exit from the stock market is the signal of a major financial decoupling, paving the way for the departure of other Chinese digital giants, against a backdrop of tensions between United States and China.

The Workers Commission (CT) accuses RTP of harassment in a statement released this Friday.

At issue is the departure of journalist Luís Vigário, who was part of the Friday at 9 program team, coordinated by Sandra Felgueiras, who also left the channel. It was on 26 November that the RTP Workers’ Commission (CT) sent a letter to the Board of Directors (CA) of the public station “warning of the risk that the members of the Sexta at 9 team would be subjected to illegitimate pressure”.

The alert, says the CT in its weekly bulletin, ?was mainly motivated by the individual character of the calls addressed to a team that, as a collective, had several times asked to meet with the DI [Direção de Informação]».

According to the CT, on the following Monday, the meetings were held, in a “formally correct” environment, where the team members gave the DI the status of the reports they had in their hands “and it informed them of its transfer to the daily information, namely the 360». However, CT guarantees that “during the day, there was already a first indication of the bullying attitude against the team members, when they saw that the vacation they had already agreed with the company was called into question and that, as always, , the whole team usually made appointments for the dates of interruption of the program».

The bulletin signed by the Workers Committee also speaks of Luís Vigário, a journalist who was scheduled for two services on the same day, one of them outside his working hours. “A discussion was started on this matter, and the journalist felt the need to justify his objections to booking a service outside working hours.”

In light of the above, a director present answered “You are a green receipt, you don’t have a schedule”, an answer that led the journalist to present his resignation to the Director of Information, due to the “rubbish”.

When the CT learned of the case, it tried to understand what had happened and, according to the bulletin, “the president responded promptly, without discussing the existence of the harassment, but referring that the worker, in any case, had already decided to accompany the coordinator of the Friday at 9 in another project, so that his departure from RTP was a decision already taken and would have ‘absolutely nothing to do’ with the meeting in question».

The president also justified his conviction with an interview given by Sandra Felgueiras, but he did not mention where it was published.

For all this, the CT of the public station wants RTP to present an apology to the journalist, inviting him to resume work at the station and even take measures to eradicate “the McCarthy and persecutory culture” that exists in the company .

However, Luís Vigário has already announced his departure from RTP on social media.

Mass movements

A debate between presidential candidates? Better than that. From November 14 to 28, in Fukuoka, Japan, Kyushu Basho was held, one of the biggest sumo tournaments of the year, a real event in the country. The opportunity to see the so-called Terunofuji Haruo attempt by all means to send his opponent, Takakeish? Mitsunobu, out of the limits of the dohy? (the combat zone), or to make him touch the ground with another part of the body than the soles. Because that is the ultimate objective of this struggle between living demigods.

In this secular art, mentioned in the oldest Japanese language book, Chronicle of ancient facts, dated VIIIe century, everything is traditions, rituals and strange details. Thus, the dohy? is surrounded by small bundles of rice straw. Four of them are set back slightly from the line of the circle. A wrestler pushed to the edge of the ring can therefore try to approach one of these points to use it as a support in order to repel his opponent more effectively. Obviously, the process is often desperate and doomed to failure. This is the case here.

The wick is said

The competitors wear a funny hairstyle called chonmage. This originally allowed the samurai to stabilize their helmets on their heads. Today, the function of this hairstyle is symbolic. His haircut even became the key moment in the sumo retirement ceremony. Dignitaries and other important people in a wrestler’s life are then invited to take one of his locks of hair, the last of which goes to his trainer.

Blood scruples

Finally, note the presence of several women in the audience. The observation is not anecdotal, because access to the dohy? is prohibited for them, according to a tradition considering blood as a stain and therefore excluding women due to menstruation. In 2007, in Tokyo, when, for the first time in the history of professional sumo, a spectator tried to enter the arena, a wrestler rushed to block her passage. Conclusion? Even more misogynistic than a debate between presidential candidates, it is possible.

Lords of the ring

In this secular art, mentioned in the oldest Japanese language book, Chronicle of ancient facts, dated VIIIe century, everything is traditions, rituals and strange details. Thus, the dohy? is surrounded by small bundles of rice straw. Four of them are set back slightly from the line of the circle. A wrestler pushed to the edge of the ring can therefore try to approach one of these points to use it as a support in order to repel his opponent more effectively. Obviously, the process is often desperate and doomed to failure. This is the case here.

With cords and cries

It goes without saying that sumo outfits are also receiving a lot of attention. The two fighters wear the very becoming mawashi, that is, a strip of fabric six to eight meters long, surrounding, in very tight loops, the pelvis, and tied in the back, at the lumbar region. Here, since it is an important competition, an apron made of cords is also attached to the mawashi. Be aware, the latter is purely decorative, and even has a good chance of falling during the confrontation.

Two theoretical physicists, from the University of Exeter (United Kingdom) and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (in Trondheim, Norway), have built a quantum theory describing a chain of quantum resonators satisfying space reflection and time reversal symmetries. They have shown how the different quantum phases of such chains are associated with remarkable phenomena, which may be useful in the design of future quantum devices relying on strong correlations.

A common distinction in physics is between open and closed systems. Closed systems are isolated from any external environment, such that energy is conserved because there is nowhere for it to escape to. Open systems are connected to the outer world, and via exchanges with the environment they are subject to energy gains and energy losses. There is an important third case. When the energy flowing in and flowing out of the system is finely balanced, an intermediate situation between being open and closed arises. This equilibrium can occur when the system obeys a combined symmetry of space and time, that is when (1) switching left and right and (2) flipping the arrow of time leave the system essentially unchanged.

In their latest research, Downing and Saroka discuss the phases of a quantum chain of resonators satisfying space reflection and time reversal symmetries. There are principally two phases of interest, a trivial phase (accompanied by intuitive physics) and a nontrivial phase (marked with surprising physics). The border between these two phases is marked by an exceptional point. The researchers have found the locations of these exceptional points for a chain with an arbitrary number of resonators, providing insight into the scaling up of quantum systems obeying these symmetries. Importantly, the nontrivial phase allows for unconventional transport effects and strong quantum correlations, which may be used to control the behaviour and propagation of light at nanoscopic length scales.

This theoretical study may be useful for the generation, manipulation and control of light in low-dimensional quantum materials, with a view to building light-based devices exploiting photons, the particles of light, as workhorses down at sizes around one billionth of a meter.

Charles Downing, from the University of Exeter, commented: ?Our work on parity-time symmetry in open quantum systems further emphasises how symmetry underpins our understanding of the physical world, and how we may benefit from it.?

Vasil Saroka, from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, added: ?We hope that our theoretical work on parity-time symmetry can inspire further experimental research in this exciting area of physics.?

We may not have measured, during the confinements, the frustration of anthropologists. It’s one thing to be grounded. It is quite another to have to think, in one’s seclusion, of the areas that have become inaccessible to which one has devoted their life. Charles Stépanoff, who has been investigating Siberian shamans for years, must have known this melancholy, but sometimes it only takes an hour’s drive to discover another world inside our own. And it is in Perche, Beauce and Yvelines that he set out to meet the people to whom he devotes The Animal and Death : rural hunters.

A few surprises accompanied this sort of neighborhood expedition. So it was not obvious that the French peasants, craftsmen or employees that he followed for two years would present so many kinship traits with their counterparts in South Siberia. Were it, as he points out, “In minor mode, often humorous or emotional, without a commonly accepted cultural structure”, an animist-looking cosmology haunts, for example, the speeches of his new interlocutors when they describe what they have learned by being in contact with animals. As in Siberia, the animal soul is cousin to them with its human counterpart.

The forest roars with speechless conversations; it is a theater where actors with hair and feathers seem to replay, in their fashion, the scenes of village society.

Nausea and vomiting affect about 85% of pregnancies and can significantly impact quality of life, particularly during early pregnancy.

?The cause of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is unknown to this date. Various theories have been proposed, but none of them is conclusive,? said Albert T. Liu, lead author for the study and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology.

?Nausea, vomiting and constipation during pregnancy can significantly diminish the quality of patients? lives. Once nausea and vomiting during pregnancy progress, they can become difficult to control, and sometimes the patient even needs to be hospitalized,? Liu said.

Beneficial microbes

Probiotics are referred to as ?beneficial bacteria.? They can be found in foods like yogurt, kimchi, kefir, sauerkraut and tempeh. Probiotics are also available as food supplements. According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, other than vitamins, probiotics or prebiotics were the third most commonly used dietary supplement for adults.

Probiotics are thought to support the community of different microbes, often referred to as the ?gut microbiome,? found in the gastrointestinal tract.

During pregnancy, hormones like estrogen and progesterone increase, bringing about many physical changes. These increases can also change the gut microbiome, which likely affects the digestive system functions and causes unwanted symptoms like nausea, vomiting and constipation.

The researchers set out to determine whether supplementing with a probiotic could be beneficial for gastrointestinal function during pregnancy.

The study lasted for 16 days. A total of 32 participants took a probiotic capsule twice a day for six days and then took two days off. They then repeated the cycle.

The probiotics were available over-the-counter and mainly containedLactobacillus., a type of good bacteria. Each capsule contained approximately 10 billion live cultures at the time of manufacture.

Participants kept 17 daily observations of their symptoms during the duration of the study, for a total of 535 observations for the researchers to statistically assess.

What the researchers found was that taking the probiotic significantly reduced nausea and vomiting. Nausea hours (the number of hours participants felt nauseous) were reduced by 16%, and the number of times they vomited was reduced by 33%. Probiotic intake also significantly improved symptoms related to quality of life, such as fatigue, poor appetite and difficulty maintaining normal social activities, as scored by questionnaires.

Probiotics were also found to reduce constipation significantly.

?Over the years, I?ve observed that probiotics can reduce nausea and vomiting and ease constipation. It?s very encouraging that the study proved this to be true,? said Liu. ?Probiotics have also benefited many of my other patients who weren?t in the study,? said Liu.

New clues from gut microbes and byproducts

Participants also contributed fecal specimens before and during the study. The samples were analyzed to identify the type and number of microbes and the different byproducts of digestion.

This allowed the researchers to examine whether biomarkers in the fecal specimens corresponded with more severe nausea and assess how the probiotics affected participants who began the study with different baseline biomarkers.

One finding was that a low amount of bacteria that carry an enzyme named bile salt hydrolase, which generates bile acid to absorb nutrients, was associated with more pregnancy-related vomiting. Probiotics increase bile salt hydrolase-producing bacteria, which may explain why the supplements decreased levels of nausea and vomiting.

Another finding was that high levels of the gut microbes Akkermansia and A. muciniphila at the beginning of the study were associated with more vomiting. The probiotic significantly reduced the amount of those particular microbes and also reduced vomiting. This suggests Akkermansia and A. muciniphila may be reliable biomarkers that can predict vomiting in pregnancy.

Another finding was that vitamin E levels increased after taking probiotics. Higher levels of vitamin E were associated with low vomiting scores.

?This research provides key insights about the impact of gut microbes on gastrointestinal function during pregnancy. Our gut microbiota explains why we are what we eat, and why bacteria-generated metabolites and products have a huge impact on our health,? said Wan. ?They affect the gastrointestinal tract as well as skin health and neurological function.?

Although the findings are intriguing, the researchers caution that due to the small sample size, further studies will be needed to confirm the effects of the probiotics.

?Our previous work showed the benefits of probiotics in preventing liver inflammation. The current study might be one of the first to show the benefits of probiotics in pregnancy,? said Wan. ?It would be interesting and important to further test whether probiotics can reduce nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy in cancer patients.?

Additional authors on this study include Shuai Chen from the Department of Public Health Sciences, and Prasant Kumar Jena, Lili Sheng and Ying Hu from the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of California, Davis.

A new Northwestern study shows the degeneration of brain motor neurons (the nerve cells in the brain that control movement of the limbs) is not merely a byproduct of the spinal motor neuron degeneration, as had been previously thought.

?We have discovered that the brain degenerates early in diseases like ALS, sends us warning signals and shows defects very early in the disease,? said lead study author Hande Ozdinler, an associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. ?Therefore, we need to repair the brain motor neurons if we want long-term and effective treatment strategies. The brain is important in ALS.?

The paper will be published Dec. 2 in Gene Therapy.

ALS is a swift and fatal neurodegenerative disease that paralyzes its victims.

Upper motor neuron diseases, such as ALS, hereditary spastic paraplegia and primary lateral sclerosis affect more than 250,000 people a year in the U.S. alone. There is no cure and no effective long-term treatment strategy.

This is the first study to clearly reveal the brain motor neuron degeneration is not a consequence of spinal motor neuron degeneration but is independent of the spinal motor neuron degeneration.

The research also is the first to show that the gene UCHL1 is important for maintaining the health of brain motor neurons that are diseased due to two independent underlying causes. One is the accumulation of badly folded proteins and the other is the accumulation of sticky protein clumps inside the cells. These problems are observed in more than 90% of all ALS cases and also in other cases of upper motor neuron diseases.

?Our findings not only give legitimacy for targeting brain motor neuron health in ALS as a therapeutic intervention, it also reveals the first target gene that can help these neurons be revitalized,? Ozdinler said.

?This has huge clinical implications,? Ozdinler said. ?Being able to modulate gene expression in diseased brain motor neurons in upper motor neuron disease patients is mind boggling. Since movement starts in the brain, if we can make the brain motor neurons happy and healthy, if we can boost their health and integrity with directed gene delivery, we may begin to develop personalized treatment options especially for patients with upper motor neuron disease, who currently have no effective treatment options.

Northwestern University scientists have previously identified NU-9, the first compound that eliminates the ongoing degeneration of upper motor neurons that become diseased and are a key contributor to ALS. Now, this study reveals the importance and significance of treating upper motor neurons in ALS and identifies the first genetic target.

The next step is to determine the best dose and the best site of injection with respect to improvement of movement and reduction of disease conditions in at least two different ALS disease models. After preclinical toxicology studies, scientists will move to translate these results into a clinical trial, a process that likely will take several years.

Cowen along with researchers Sam Sledzieski, Rohit Singh, and renowned computational biologist Bonnie Berger from MIT?s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab found that the D-SCRIPT model, trained on more than 38,000 human PPIs, was better able to generalize when compared to the current state-of-the-art approach (the deep-learning method PIPR), and therefore could characterize fly proteins. They also applied D-SCRIPT to screen for PPIs related to cow digestion and identified functional gene modules that related to immune response and metabolism.

The researchers concluded that the D-SCRIPT model trained on human PPI data could be applied to many species of interest ? critically, even those that have been rarely studied or that lack PPI data.
