US stock futures remained stable in overnight trading on Tuesday after the big averages made up for much of their losses from Monday’s sell-off.

Dow futures rose 40 points. S&P 500 futures gained 0.15% and Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.1%.

Netflix reported a disappointing third-quarter subscriber forecast after the bell on Tuesday, but the stock remained unchanged in extended trading. The streaming giant expects 3.5 million net subscribers in the third quarter, nearly 2 million below analyst estimates. The company also reported results that fell short of expectations.

Meanwhile, Chipotle’s shares rose 4% in after-hours trading as the Mexican fast food reported quarterly sales surpassing pre-pandemic levels as customers returned to its restaurants for dinner.

On Tuesday, stocks rebounded sharply from Monday’s sell-off triggered by a Covid-inspired global growth crisis. After its 8 month value day on Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded nearly 550 points, or 1.6%. It was the Dow’s biggest jump in more than a month.

The S&P 500 was up 1.5%. The Nasdaq Composite was up 1.6%.

The Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark was up 3% when the reopening games collapsed. American Airlines was up 8.4% and Norwegian Cruise Line was up 8.3%.

Bond yields also rebounded, with 10-year US Treasuries stabilizing 1.2% after falling to its lowest level in 5 months on Monday.

“Until the 10-year return rises above 1.3% again and stays above this level for a few days, today’s stock market rally is likely to be hesitant,” said Jim Paulsen, chief investment strategist of the Leuthold Group.

Some strategists see the market heading for a volatile phase in which there could be a deeper pullback. Investors juggle inflation concerns and new Covid cases rebound in the US as the Delta variant spreads.

“I think what we’ve seen here are the early warning shots of a correction that we’re likely to see … in late August, September, October,” said Matt Maley, equity strategist at Miller Tabak.

The winning season continues on Wednesday with important reports from Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, Verizon, CSX, Las Vegas Sands and Texas Instruments. According to FactSet, about 85% of the S&P 500 companies that have reported to date have beat estimates.

Thomas Barrack, a private equity investor who is a close friend of former President Donald Trump, was arrested Tuesday morning in Los Angeles on federal charges of illegally operating Trump on behalf of the United Arab Emirates.

Barrack, who was charged with two other men in a seven-fold indictment in Brooklyn, New York federal court, served as chairman of Trump’s 2017 charter fund.

The Santa Monica, California resident, along with the other defendants, is charged with clandestinely advancing the interests of the United Arab Emirates on orders from senior officials in that country by influencing the foreign policy positions of Trump’s 2016 campaign and then the foreign policy positions of the US government during Trump’s presidency through April 2018.

Barrack is also charged with obstruction of justice and multiple false statements during an interview with federal police officers in June 2019.

The indictment states that Barrack, 74, was informally advising American officials on Middle East policy during the indictment period and was also seeking appointment to a senior role in the U.S. government, including serving as special envoy for the Middle East.

The evidence against Barrack includes thousands of emails, text messages, iCloud recordings, flight records and social media records, prosecutors said separately on a sticky note.

Prosecutors also said that Barrack had also met and assisted senior leaders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is a close ally of the UAE, and that he had provided “UAE government officials” with sensitive, non-public information about developments within the government. including information on the positions of several senior US government officials in relation to the blockade of Qatar carried out by the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries. ‘ “

The indicted with barracks are Matthew Grimes, 27, from Aspen, Colorado, and a 43-year-old UAE citizen, Rashid Sultan Rashid Al Malik Alshahhi.

Grimes, who worked for Barrack-founded private equity firm Colony Capital, was arrested Tuesday in California.

“Mentioned Barrack several times [Al Malik] as the UAE’s “secret weapon” to advance its foreign policy agenda in the United States, “a Justice Department press release said.

“The defendants repeatedly exploited Barrack’s friendships and access to a candidate who was eventually elected president, high-ranking campaign and government officials and the American media to advance the political goals of a foreign government without revealing their true loyalty,” the said Acting Assistant Attorney General Mark Lesko of the Department of Justice’s National Security Division.

“The conduct alleged in the indictment is nothing less than betrayal of these officials in the United States, including the former president,” Lesko said in a statement.

Prosecutors in a memo requesting Barracks detention in Los Angeles pending his later bail hearing in Brooklyn said that in communicating with Al Malik, Barrack ?designed his efforts to obtain an official position within the government to do it would enable it to serve the interests of the United Arab Emirates and not the interests of the United States. “

“When the defendant was seeking a position as US ambassador to the United Arab Emirates or special envoy for the Middle East, he informed Al Malik that such an appointment would” give ABU DHABI more power! “The memo said, referring to the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

“Al Malik agreed that if the defendant were successfully appointed to such an official position, it would result in the defendant delivering ‘more’ for the UAE and its efforts[v]very effective operation. ‘ The defendant agreed. “

The prosecutor found that Barrack, who is a Lebanese citizen, is extremely wealthy, has access to a private jet he flew to the UAE in March, and ?has deep and longstanding ties to countries that do not have extradition treaties with the United States has ?Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

A Trump spokeswoman did not respond immediately to a request for comment on Barrack’s arrest.

Matthew Herrington, an attorney for Barrack, told CNBC that his client was arrested in Los Angeles “although we cooperated with this investigation from the start.”

A Barrack spokesman said: “Mr. Barrack volunteered to investigate from the start. He is not guilty and will plead not guilty.”

Barrack stepped down as CEO of Colony Capital in 2020. In April he stepped down as Executive Chairman of the company.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office has been investigating Barracks’ alleged work on behalf of the UAE for at least two years.

One of the events that caught their attention was an energy policy speech given by Trump as a presidential candidate in May 2016.

The indictment accuses Barrack of “including a language in which the UAE is praised” and “emailed a draft speech to Alshahhi for distribution to senior UAE officials”.

For the next two years, prosecutors claim that Barrack “sought and received instruction and feedback, including topics for discussion, from senior UAE officials in connection with national press appearances that Barrack has used to advance the interests of the UAE.”

“During that time, Barrack never registered as a lobbyist for the UAE as required by the Foreign Agents Registration Act,” the indictment said.

The United Arab Emirates, with which Trump had business relationships before he took office, established itself as a key relationship with the United States in the region during the Trump administration.

The UAE signed the 2020 Abraham Agreement, which took steps to normalize relations between a handful of Middle East nations, including Israel.

Last November, then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the Trump administration would sell more than $ 23 billion in military equipment to the UAE “in recognition of our deepened relationships” and “in recognition of the nation’s need for advanced defense capabilities to deter and defend oneself ?. against increased threats from Iran. “

A friend of Trump for decades, Barrack appeared as an early supporter of Trump’s presidential run long before many on Wall Street viewed the property developer as a serious contender for the White House.

In the spring of 2016, when Trump started sweeping primaries, Barrack and Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump convinced him he needed to hire a real campaign manager.

Barrack urged Trump to bring in Paul Manafort, a longtime Washington and Republican lobbyist.

Manafort eventually rose to campaign chairman for Trump before resigning in August 2016 after reports of foreign lobbying on behalf of Ukrainian politicians. Both Manafort and Barrack hoped their collaboration in 2016 would be to the benefit of every man.

Barrack wanted to be appointed Middle East envoy in a future Trump administration. But after Trump won the White House, Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner intervened, and Barrack didn’t get the job.

Manafort, meanwhile, had hoped that Barracks connections in the Middle East would lead to lucrative deals for Manafort’s lobbying practice.

But years of investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller put an end to Barrack and Manafort’s hopes of rising to prominent positions in Trump’s White House.

According to prosecutors, questions about Barrack’s foreign lobbyism first came to light during the investigation into Mueller.

By the end of his investigation, Müller had referred a total of 14 criminal cases to the public prosecutor, most of which are still sealed today.

In 2019, Manafort was found guilty by a jury of eight crimes related to foreign lobbying and tax evasion. He was imprisoned for almost two years and was released in June last year.

Trump later pardoned Manafort just before he left the White House.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Tuesday urged the state’s unvaccinated residents to get a Covid shot and told CNBC in an interview that he hoped there was no need to revert to public health restrictions like masking requirements to introduce.

The Democratic governor’s comments on the “Squawk Box” come as US coronavirus cases rise sharply while the highly contagious Delta variant is in circulation. However, the average number of recent daily new infections remains well below the country’s peak earlier this year.

The rise in infections is particularly affecting areas with low vaccination rates, according to US officials. President Joe Biden said last week, “Look, the only pandemic we have is of the unvaccinated.”

Murphy used similar language in his CNBC interview Tuesday. “We have probably 350 people in our hospital. We keep them in our prayers. But I dare say they are all unvaccinated. So I would just keep … asking people to get vaccinated.”

“The variants are all over our state,” he said. “I would ask people to get vaccinated and if they do it doesn’t mean they can’t get Covid. But it mostly means that you will stay out of the hospital and please God stay alive.” . “

According to a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins University data, the seven-day average of new daily coronavirus cases in New Jersey is about 422, nearly 50% more than a week ago. However, it is dramatically lower than in mid-January, when the seven-day average of new daily infections in New Jersey peaked at nearly 6,200. At that time, the US vaccination campaign was still in its infancy.

The seven-day average of the country’s new daily coronavirus cases is 34,730, up 47% from a week ago, according to CNBC analysis of the Johns Hopkins data. The highest seven-day average of new daily infections ever recorded in the US was around 251,000 in early January. Coronavirus cases are increasing in 46 states and Washington, DC

Murphy admitted that New Jersey’s Covid situation has worsened recently but said it was relative.

“The good news is that the overall metrics, if you look at hospital admissions, positivity rates, critically ill people in intensive care, transfer rates, etc. are largely in very good shape,” he said first vaccine. “

Nearly 49% of the US population are fully vaccinated, and 56.1% have received at least one dose of vaccine, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 55% of the total New Jersey population are fully vaccinated.

According to the CDC, fully vaccinated individuals “can resume activities without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart, unless otherwise permitted by federal, state, local, tribal, laws, rules and regulations. or territorial level required, including local business and workplace guidelines. “

Last week, officials in Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the country, reintroduced their mask mandate for indoor use, including those fully vaccinated, due to rising coronavirus cases.

When asked if New Jersey would follow LA County’s measures on masks, Murphy said, “For now, I hope we don’t have to.” In general, the governor said New Jersey wanted the Covid restrictions, which the governor said most of which were repealed by early June, will not come back into force. “If we have to, we will,” he warned.

“I hope … we can stay where we are, but you never say never,” added Murphy. “This virus is dictating the conditions, not us, and we will continue to watch it like a hawk.”

Automakers General Motors and Stellantis have poached executives from several tech companies, including Amazon and Lyft, as the industries continue to battle for top talent.

The automakers announced the hiring on Tuesday, marking the latest round of talent exchanges between the automotive and tech industries as the sectors converge with the advent of connected, autonomous and electric vehicles.

GM is adding four new executives to its BrightDrop EV commercial delivery and logistics business, the company announced in January. According to GM, the new hires are effective immediately:

Anthony Armenta, former Vice President of Engineering at Postmates, will become Chief Technology Officer.

Rachad Youssef, formerly Vice President of Software Product Management at the Chinese electric vehicle start-up Nio, will become Chief Product Officer.

Shaluinn Fullove, formerly global head of people for autonomous technology and ridesharing at Lyft, will join as chief people officer.

Steve Hornyak, formerly Fabric’s chief commercial officer, will become chief revenue officer.

Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler, has hired Ned Curic, Amazon’s vice president of Alexa Automotive, as the company’s first chief technology officer since the company was founded through a merger between Fiat Chrysler and French automaker PSA Groupe in January.

“Ned comes to us at the perfect time to shape Stellantis in the context of an unprecedented change in our industry,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, in a statement.

Curic, who previously worked at Toyota Motor and Microsoft, will join Stellantis on August 30th.

With the advent of connected vehicles and companies on both sides researching and developing autonomous vehicles, the automotive and technology industries are increasingly battling for talent. Automotive start-ups such as Lucid and Rivian are also vying for top talent from both industries.

Tech companies have won over the past few years. Ford Motor lost its Chief Technology Officer to Amazon earlier this month and two marketing executives to Google and Facebook in 2020. GM also recently lost CFO Dhivya Suryadevara to digital payments company Stripe. Previously, Alicia Boler Davis – who led GM’s global manufacturing – went to Amazon.

Breaking rules in cafes and bars in the Netherlands is an ongoing problem the hospitality industry has to grapple with, the country’s prime minister said as the country grapples with a surge in Covid-19 infections.

On Monday, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte pleaded with the industry to get customers to abide by social distancing rules and sit in their assigned seats, adding that it was critical given the high number of infections.

“With regard to the hospitality industry, we would like to point out that things are going well in many places, but not in too many places and it is extremely important,” said Rutte at a short press conference on Monday afternoon.

Rutte said police cannot monitor tens of thousands of bars, cafes and restaurants in the Netherlands to make sure they are complying with social distancing and customer seating rules. “So we really have to do this together,” he said. “With the current infection figures, we don’t want to have to take any additional measures,” he added.

Not enough social distancing

Rutte’s comments come as the Netherlands scrambles to curb an increase in Covid infections, mainly among younger people. Amid optimism about their vaccination program, the Dutch government announced in late June that most restrictions, with the exception of the 1.5 meter social distancing rule, would be lifted and nightclubs would be allowed to reopen.

The number of cases soon skyrocketed, however, to around 10,000 cases on July 10 in just one week, prompting the government to turn around and apologize to Rutte for lifting the restrictions too early.

The government admitted that “the rate of coronavirus infection in the Netherlands has increased much faster than expected since the society was almost completely reopened on June 26”. “Most of the infections have occurred in nightclubs and parties with many people,” it said when nightclubs had to close on July 10th.

While bars, restaurants and cafes are allowed to stay open and are 100% occupied, strict rules apply.

People must be assigned seats and be kept 1.5 meters apart when seated indoors, unless hygiene screens are placed between the tables. No social distancing is required for field work. Entertainment, including live performances and television screens, is not permitted and no loud music may be played as stated in government regulations. The venues must close at midnight.

Coen Berends, a spokesman for the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, told CNBC on Tuesday that it was ?impossible to calculate the impact of this? rule break ?in bars, cafes and restaurants.

?In general, we model the effects of the rules applied and we can also model the effects of the absence of rules. These models predict the effect of an entire package of measures, but cannot differentiate between different rules or non-compliance.Generally, our Management Outbreak Team advises on the rules of social distancing and sitting in assigned seats in bars and restaurants in order to prevent the spread of the virus to diminish. Disregarding these rules can definitely have repercussions. Especially with the now dominant Delta variant of the virus, ?he said.

?However, we do not know the extent of this effect. It will certainly not have the massive effect that the opening of clubs and the organization of large events had a few weeks ago. We are now seeing the numbers of positive tests stabilize. The latest actions by our government appear to be working. We still have to see how this works out [the] Hospital stays, “remarked Berends.

Infections are in full swing

The Netherlands is certainly still in a difficult position with Covid infections, is just below Great Britain with the high infection rate in Europe, but further behind when it comes to vaccinations. In the UK, 68.5% of adults are fully vaccinated and in the Netherlands it is just over 50%, according to the latest available data.

On Monday, Jaap van Dissel, the chairman of the government’s outbreak management team and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Control, warned that in the last seven calendar days (measured from July 9th to 15th) the number of reports of Covid-positive people increased by 298% compared to the previous seven days.

“Since the easing of measures on June 26, the number of infections among 18 to 29-year-olds has risen sharply,” said van Dissel in an open letter to the country’s director-general for public health. He said it was too early to say what the impact of tightening the measures would be.

On Monday, Health Minister Hugo de Jonge expressed the hope that the cases will stabilize and decline. Speaking to Rutte on Monday, De Jonge said that ?in the last week? the number of positive test results has stabilized and that means that growth will not continue. I think that’s positive. ”

“At the same time we have to say: The number of positive test results at this level of around 10,000 per day in the past week is of course too high and that must of course be reduced.”

He said the country must work hard to reduce the number of infections, reiterating Rutte’s call for the 1.5-meter social distancing rule to apply ?in the hospitality industry, on the street and even at home when we are Receiving guests … We really need this 1.5 meters for the time being to ensure that we can keep this epidemic under control. “

When we are younger, our relationships may be more anchored in the physical than in the spiritual and emotional. But there is a certain kind of love at the basis of any lasting relationship, and at the center of that spiritual connection are the teachings of the philosopher Plato.

What is platonic love?

You have probably heard of a ?platonic friendship? or the ?platonic ideal?. These are terms that emerged from Plato’s considerations, but were not coined by the philosopher himself. Rather, the idea that two people can have a fulfilling relationship without sexual contact arose from an extrapolation from Plato’s work The Symposium, in which Socrates describes the human understanding of love like a ladder. Each step of the ladder indicates a higher level of love, from being in love with a beautiful body to loving beauty itself.

In an abridged viewThe ladder goes something like this: love for a beautiful body, for all physical beauty, then for a greater reverence for spiritual beauty than physical beauty. Eventually this is overtaken by the love of the beauty of knowledge, and finally the love of beauty itself.

In his conception at the time, Plato’s concept of love differed greatly from our understanding today. First of all, in 5th century Greece, romantic love was reserved for homosexual relationships between men. who only married women to meet reproductive needs. The concept of love as a ladder was introduced in the 15th century through the writings of the Italian scholar Marsilio Ficino, who after slate, first coined the term ?platonic love? or ?amor platonicus?.

G / O Media can receive a commission

Per Ficino’s interpretation, the highest order of love was not a sexual endeavor, but rather linked to something much spiritual, in that he wrote that love ?does not desire this or that body, but desires the splendor of divine light that shines through the body, and is amazed ?. and impressed by it. “However, since the 16th century the term platonic relationships has been used to clearly describe those in the friend zone, since platonic love has little to do with sex. However, this was just the evolutionary course of the term – and it may not be entirely correct.

Platonic love still involves a deep, spiritual connection that is different from the concept we hear a lot about today. As the Conversation Notes, Platonic love is probably best embodied in a monologue at Aristophanes’ symposium, which basically distills that love is the search for the Platonic ideal of a soul mate:

Love is born into every human being; it calls back the halves of our original nature together; it tries to make one out of two and to heal the wound of human nature. So each of us is a “suitable half” of a human whole … and each of us is always looking for the half that suits him.

This is essentially the core of Platonism, which Dictionary.com defined as “love for the idea of ??beauty, seen as the termination of a development from the desire for an individual and love for physical beauty to love and contemplation of spiritual or ideal beauty”.

This can affect your approach to partnering or improving your relationship with your current partner.

How platonic love can help your relationship

While sex is important, you can keep Plato in mind by viewing your relationship as a kind of spiritual fusion. You are not so much connected to a person’s body as to their soul, or maybe it is the looser, more abstract idea of ??what their love means to you that keeps the flame burning.

The basic attraction – or the first step in the ladder – forms the connection or stimulates the urge to join forces.

From there, scale the steps until a higher level of mutual understanding is formed. It may not have been Plato’s true intent over 2,000 years ago, but his concept of love can be instructive to anyone in a relationship today.

VAN HORN, Texas – Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world and is now the first to hold that title while away from earth.

Blue Origin introduced him to space history on Tuesday, with Bezos driving his company’s first manned New Shepard rocket alongside his brother and the oldest and youngest people to have ever flown in space.

After landing, Bezos considered realizing his long-awaited dream of flying in space.

“Best day ever!” he said.

The capsule with the crew of Blue Origin accelerated to more than three times the speed of sound before reaching 80 kilometers (or about 262,000 feet), the limit the US uses to mark the edge of space. The crew hovered in weightlessness for a few minutes before the capsule returned and landed under a set of parachutes.

The launch marked Blue Origin’s entry into the private space market, joining Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic – its direct competitor in the suborbital tourism sector – and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Make history

In addition to his unique fortune, Bezos, 57, is also the sole founder of space to operate his company’s first manned flight. While SpaceX and Virgin Galactic have already launched astronauts, Bezos is the first to embark on the first crew flight.

Floating next to him: Wally Funk, 82, and Oliver Daemen, 18 – the oldest and youngest people ever to have flown in space – and Bezos’ brother Mark, 53.

Blue origin | Reuters

Bezos invited his brother and Funk, a space pioneer, to join the flight. Daemen was a late addition. His seat was originally part of a public auction, but the auction winner, an anonymous person who bid $ 28 million to fly Bezos, was unable to meet the July 20th launch date. Daemen’s father Joes, CEO of a private equity firm in the Netherlands, was also a bidder, with Daemen being the paying passenger on Blue Origin’s second crew launch. When the mysterious bidder stepped down, the company rescheduled Daemen to start first.

The launch on Tuesday also occurred on another historic milestone – the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Bezos’ vision of space

The launch of New Shepard marks a milestone in the Bezos vision. He founded Blue Origin with the goal of “creating a future where millions of people in space live and work to help the earth”.

The New Shepard rocket and the capsule on it are reusable and can take off, land and start again multiple times. The missile system is in many ways a trailblazer for other, larger Blue Origin projects – like the New Glenn orbital rocket.

An artist’s illustration of a New Glenn rocket on the launch pad in Florida.

Blue origin

Like New Shepard, the New Glenn rocket booster is designed to be reusable, with the company expecting each one to take off and land 25 times. New Glenn, with a first launch date for late 2022, is about 320 feet tall and is expected to lift nearly 50 tons of payload into low earth orbit. The rockets are named after Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard and John Glenn, the first American in space and the first American to orbit Earth. In 1998, Senator Glenn, then 77, became the oldest person in space.

Blue Origin has also developed several engines to power its two rockets, including the BE-3, BE-4, and BE-7 engines.

Blue Origin is testing one of the BE-4 rocket engines the company is developing for the launch of its New Glenn rocket.

Blue origin | gif from @thesheetztweetz

Blue Origin is also working on a manned lander called the Blue Moon, which the company hopes will one day bring astronauts and cargo to the lunar surface.

Space billionaires

A mural depicting Jeff Bezo and his brother Mark Bezo is seen in Van Horn, Texas, two days prior to the scheduled launch of Blue Origin’s maiden flight to the edge of space by American billionaire Jeff Bezos and his three crew members in the nearby town Van Horn, Texas, USA July 18, 2021.

Thom Baur | Reuters

The company’s only direct competition in the market for bringing space tourists to the edge of space is Branson’s Virgin Galactic, a sector known as suborbital tourism. SpaceX is preparing to launch its first private mission called Inspiration4 in September, but Musk’s company is sending its capsules further into space on multi-day flights, known as orbital tourism.

Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic developed rocket-powered starships, but that’s where the similarities end. As Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket launches vertically, Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo system is deployed into the air and returns to Earth like an airplane gliding for a runway landing.

And while Blue Origin takes off autonomously, the Virgin Galactic system is flown by two pilots. Branson’s company has so far conducted four test flights in space but does not expect to fly paying customers before 2022.

Blue Origin’s auction raised $ 28 million, but a seat on a suborbital spaceship is usually much cheaper. Virgin Galactic has historically sold reservations between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000 per ticket and recently billed the Italian Air Force about $ 500,000 per ticket for a training room flight.

The tourism market is a thriving part of the space economy valued at more than $ 420 billion. Yet its high standing – given the much more exciting human element – means it has a strong and far-reaching impact on the space industry, with investors often pointing to astronaut flights to add to excitement about the broader impact of the alien market.
