The children penned their hopes for the world and wishes for the future and placed them in recycled plastic bottles they decorated as part of an Arte di Bvlgari program activity. These bottle art pieces were then sent to a Houston artist, who assembled them into the ?Wish in a Bottle? display.
The Arte di Bvlgari program is hosted in two local school districts in conjunction with Save the Children?s existing literacy, math and enrichment programs. It is made possible by Bvlgari North America, and it offers children the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of arts over the course of the school year, including dance, sculpture, painting, visual arts and more.

Über 1?400 Kilometer Ostseeküste weist das Bundesland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern auf. Und entlang dieser Küste lässt sich so einiges Entdecken: geschichtsträchtige Hansestädte, noble Kaiserbäder, charmante Fischerdörfer und eine abwechslungsreiche Naturlandschaft. Eine Gegend, die fast für jeden (Urlaubs-)Geschmack etwas in petto hat. Kein Wunder, steht Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regelmässig auf dem Siegertreppchen des beliebtesten Ferienbundeslandes.
Wir haben uns diesen Spätsommer eine Woche Zeit genommen, um drei der insgesamt sechs Hansestädte Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns und ihr Umland zu besichtigen. Die Zugreise führte uns von Rostock via Stralsund bis nach Greifswald im nordöstlichsten Ecken von Deutschland. In den nachfolgenden Zeilen zeigen wir dir, wie vielfältig die Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste ist und welche Orte uns besonders gefallen haben.
Die Mecklenburgische Ostseeküste im Überblick
Die Küste Mecklenburg-Vorpommers reicht von der Travemündung bei Lübeck bis zur polnischen Grenze bei Swinemünde auf der Insel Usedom. Zu den Hansestädten mit direktem Küstenbezug zählen Wismar, Rostock, Stralsund und Greifswald. Etwas weiter im Landesinneren bzw. etwas weiter von der Küste entfernt liegen Anklam an der Peene und Demmin. Die Altstädte von Wismar und Stralsund sind im Jahr 2002 in die Liste der UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen worden.
Zwischen Rostock und Stralsund befindet sich die Halbinsel Fischland-Darß-Zingst, die grossteils im Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft liegt und für ihre hübschen Kapitänshäuser und die weitläufige Natur bekannt ist. Bei Stralsund schlägt die «Rügenbrücke» den Bogen über den Strelasund auf die Insel Rügen ? der Touristenmagnet schlechthin. Und östlich von Greifswald geht?s via Wolgast nach Usedom, wo SonnenanbeterInnen 40 Kilometer Sandstrand vorfinden. ¨
Die Reiseziele der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste sind so vielfältig, dass es einem bei der Ferienplanung keinesfalls leichtfällt, Prioritäten zu setzen. Soll ich einen oder zwei Tage für Rostock einplanen?Das Kranichland oder die Insel Rügen besuchen?Und lohnt sich ein Zwischenstopp in Greifswald? Mit diesen Fragen im Hinterkopf haben wir uns auf den Weg an die Ostsee gemacht.
1. Die vielen Gesichter der Hanse- und Universitätsstadt Rostock
Mit über 200?000 Einwohnern ist Rostock die grösste Stadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns. Sie ist auch diejenige Stadt mit dem grössten Hafen der deutschen Ostseeküste. Rostock versprüht einerseits Grossstadt Flair und ist andererseits überraschend alternativ. Zwei Komponenten, die ich an Städten besonders mag. Eine weitere Komponente sind die vielen «Gesichter», die Rostock heute hat. Diese zeigen sich besonders schön bei der Faulen Grube hinter der Marienkirche. Auf der einen Seite leicht schiefe, kleinteilige Fachwerkgebäude. Auf der anderen Seite die 60 Meter breite «Lange Strasse». Eine Prachtstrasse nach sowjetischem Vorbild. Gesäumt von einer Gesamtüberbauung, die in den Nachkriegsjahren im Rahmen einer grossangelegten Bauinitiative zwischen 1953 bis 1967 entstand und seit 1979 unter Denkmalschutz steht. Städtebaulich hochinteressant.
Wer verwinkelte Gassen schnurgeraden Strassenachsen vorzieht, der startet seinen Spaziergang beim Neuen Markt gegenüber vom Rathaus und folgt der Kröpeliner Strasse durch den westlichen Teil der Rostocker Altstadt via Universitätsplatz mit dem «Brunnen der Lebensfreude» bis zum imposanten Kröpeliner-Tor. Werft dabei auch einen Blick in die links und rechts angrenzenden Gassen. Dieser Spaziergang führt euch an einigen schönen Backsteinbauten vorbei. Auf der Höhe des Kulturhistorischen Museums könnt ihr zudem einen Blick auf die einstige Stadtmauer sowie die Wallanlage werfen.
Einen Zwischenstopp ist auch die Marienkirche wert. In ihrem Inneren lässt sich die älteste noch funktionierende astronomische Uhr begutachten. Ein technisches Meisterwerk aus dem Mittelalter! Hat der Spaziergang euren Appetit angeregt? Dann ist es an der Zeit für einen Abstecher in die Östliche Altstadt rund um die St.-Petri-Kirche. Hier verstecken sich mit Mademoiselle Inga, Albert & Emilie sowie den Altstädter Stuben drei der lässigsten Restaurants der Stadt.
Und falls ihr weitere (oder aktuelle) Restauranttipps benötigt, dann lohnt sich eine Kaffeepause im Café 92 Grad (oder alternativ im Café Laska, das vom selben Team betrieben wird). Die Besitzer kennen sich in der Rostocker Restaurantszene gut aus und wissen, was in Rostock gerade angesagt ist. Der Besuch der beiden Cafés lässt sich gut mit einem Bummel durch die Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt («KTV») kombinieren. Das Studenten- und Künstlerviertel punktet mit einer bunten Mischung aus Street-Art, Bars, Cafés und internationaler Küche (vietnamesisch, indisch, afghanisch, italienisch ? hier findest du alles).
Für die Besichtigung der Rostocker Altstadt inklusive KTV lohnt es sich, einen vollen Tag einzuplanen. Als Schlechtwetteralternative (oder zum Aufwärmen) bietet sich der Besuch des zentral gelegenen Kulturhistorischen Museums an. Und spätestens zur Blue Hour zeigt sich Rostock auch bei Regenwetter von seiner allerschönsten Seite.
2. Das Seebad Warnemünde
Und ich spreche aus Erfahrung. In Rostock ist das Wetterglück nämlich nicht auf unserer Seite. Auch am zweiten Tag begrüsst uns ein grau bedeckter Himmel und eine fiese kühle Brise. Schade ? denn unsere Unterkunft, das Radisson Blu am Rande der Altstadt punktet nicht nur mit zimmerhohen Fenstern, sondern auch mit einer tollen Rooftop Bar.
Auch für den heute geplanten Ausflug ins Seebad Warnemünde, einen Stadtteil von Rostock, wäre Sonnenschein passender gewesen. Zum Glück verfügt die MS «Rostocker 7» über einen behaglichen Salon inklusive modernster Be- und Entlüftungsanlage. Mit dem Flaggschiff der Rostocker Personenschifffahrt lässt sich demnach auch bei Regenwetter eine grosse Hafenrundfahrt unternehmen. Diese führt vom Stadthafen in Fussdistanz zur Altstadt via Rostocker Überseehafen nach Warnemünde.
Alternativ gelangt man auch mit der S-Bahn in rund 20 Minuten vom Hauptbahnhof Rostock nach Warnemünde. Die Hafenrundfahrt bietet aber nochmals einen neuen Blickwinkel auf die «Skyline» von Rostock.
In Warnemünde verköstigen wir uns am «Alten Strom», wo die Fischkutter anlegen, mit einem Fischbrötchen und spazieren danach der Westmole entlang bis zu dessen Leuchtturm. Direkt dahinter befindet sich die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit von Warnemünde: das Duo aus Teepott und Leuchtturm. Während sich am Strom und der Alexandrinenstrasse bunte Fischer- und Kapitänshäuser aneinanderreihen, finden sich an der Seestrasse mit dem Kurhaus Warnemünde (Baujahr 1928), dem Teepott (Baujahr 1968) sowie dem Hotel Neptun (Baujahr 1971) einige für das 20. Jahrhundert prägnante Bauten.
3. Der «Gespensterwald» Nienhagen
Ein Rundgang durch Warnemünde inklusive Stopp im Heimatmuseum nimmt rund zwei Stunden in Anspruch. Wir haben etwas mehr Zeit mitgebracht und wollen diese für eine Fahrradtour entlang des Ostseeküstenradweges ins knapp 10 Kilometer entfernte Nienhagen nutzen. Den dafür notwendigen fahrbaren «Untersatz» holen wir uns beim Dock Inn Hostel beim Bahnhof Warnemünde Werft. Das gemäss Lonely Planet «coolste Hotel ever» hat nämlich auch einen Fahrradverleih im Angebot. Ausgerüstet mit zwei Velos aus der Retro-Flotte (will heissen: hier sind die Waden gefordert), folgen wir dem bestens ausgeschilderten Ostsee-Radweg durch wunderschöne Küstenwälder bis nach Nienhagen.
Westlich vom Strand beginnt der Gespensterwald. Der Küstenabschnitt mit den bizarr geformten 90- bis 170-jährigen Eichen, Buchen und Hainbuchen wurde in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt. Insbesondere an Wochenenden und an schönen Sommertagen zieht der mystische Wald zahlreiche Ausflügler an. Die Velotour lohnt sich aber zu jeder Jahreszeit und bei jedem Wetter.
4. Die Stralsunder Altstadt
Nach zwei grauen Tagen in Rostock-Warnemünde fahren wir mit dem Zug weiter nach Stralsund. Die beiden Hansestädte sind ohne umzusteigen in weniger als einer Stunde mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr erreichbar. In Stralsund befindet sich der Bahnhof direkt vor den Altstadtkern umspannenden Teichen als Teil der alten Wehranlage. Mit knapp 60?000 Einwohnern ist Stralsund deutlich kleiner als Rostock. Durch seine Lage am Strelasund bzw. auf dem Weg nach Rügen und mit dem Ozeaneum als Besuchermagnet, zieht Stralsund insbesondere in der Hochsaison zahlreiche Tagestouristen an.
Wir checken hier im direkt am Wasser gelegenen Hotel Hafenresidenz ein (nirgends in Stralsund nächtigt man näher am Wasser) und begeben uns dann schnurstracks auf einen ersten Augenschein. Den besten Blick über Stralsund bietet die Marienkirche. Doch den unvergesslichen Rundblick über die Stadt erfordert etwas Schnauf. Exakt 366 Stufen wollen nämlich zuerst überwunden werden. Doch es lohnt sich!
Danach spaziert man am besten einfach kreuz und quer durch die kopfsteingepflasterten Altstadtgässchen, die sich von ihrer Grundstruktur her seit der Stadtgründung im 13. Jahrhundert kaum verändert haben. Dabei werdet ihr an einigen inhabergeführten Geschäften wie dem Fischhandel Rasmus, der den Orginal Stralsunder Bismarckhering herstellt oder der Manufaktur Treibholz, die selbst gebaute Boards sowie nachhaltig produzierte Kleider verkaufen, vorbeikommen. Ein Stopp ist auch die Museumswerkstatt der Spielkartenfabrik am Katharinenberg wert. Und wie in Rostock haben wir mit dem Café 66 und dem Café SüdWest auch in der Stralsunder Altstadt rasch zwei neue Lieblingsplätze für eine Kaffeepause (oder ein leckeres Frühstück) gefunden.
Etwas abseits von den Hauptgassen liegt das unter Denkmalschutz stehende Heilgeisthospital mit seinem bekannten Säulengang und den umliegenden hübschen Fachwerkhäuschen.
Die eindrücklichste Gebäudekulisse wird euch auf dem Alten Markt geboten. Dieser bildet das Zentrum der historischen Altstadt und wird vom Rathaus, der Nikolaikirche und weiteren imposanten Backsteinbauten gesäumt. Hier befindet sich auch die Tourismuszentrale der Hansestadt Stralsund sowie eine Welterbe-Ausstellung (Eintritt frei).
An schönen Tagen ist die Hafenkneipe «Zum Goldenen Anker» direkt neben dem schwimmenden Museumsschiff «Gorch Fock» ein beliebter Spot für den Sundowner. Kein Wunder ? bei dieser zauberhaften Abendstimmung am Strelasund.
5. Das Störtebeker Brauquartier
Wer in der Altstadt von Stralsund ein feines, gehobenes Abendessen geniessen möchte, der sollte sich das Restaurant «zum Scheele» als Tipp notieren. Ebenso lohnend ist ein Abstecher ins Störtebeker Brauquartier, das sich 10 Fahrminuten mit dem Bus ausserhalb der Altstadt befindet. Der Bierexport von Stralsund nach Dänemark und Norwegen spielte zur Zeit der Hanse eine wichtige Rolle. Die lange Tradition des Bierbrauens in Stralsund erlebt seit der Wende eine Renaissance und die Produkte der Störtebeker Braumanufaktur sind an der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste allgegenwärtig. Hier in Stralsund besteht die Möglichkeit an Brauereiführungen und Verkostungen teilzunehmen. Oder aber im Braugasthaus das passende Bier-Pairing zu einem regionalen und saisonalen Menü zu geniessen.
6. Der Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenküste
Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich der Ostseeküstenradweg durch unsere Reise entlang der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste. Leider fehlte uns die nötige Zeit, um die total 695 Kilometer Radweg von der Travemündung bis nach Usedom abzuradeln und gleichzeitig auch noch all die Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besichtigen. Stattdessen bauten wir bei jedem Stopp eine Radtour ins Sightseeing-Programm mit ein. Prädikat: nachahmenswert! Mit dem Rad lässt sich die spannende Natur- und Kulturlandschaft rund um die Hansestädte nämlich super entdecken.
So auch in Stralsund ? hier empfiehlt das Tourismusbüro für Tages- und Halbtagesausflüge mit dem Rad drei Rundtouren im Umland: Die Grosse Strelasundtour, eine Runde durch die Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft und eine Tour durch das Kranichland nordwestlich von Stralsund. Wir entscheiden uns für Letzteres und machen uns an einem sonnigen Nachmittag von Stralsund aus auf den Weg Richtung Barhöft. Dort kann man im Hotel Seeblick nicht nur fein und mit ? wie es der Name verspricht ? «Ostseeblick» speisen, sondern geniesst vom Aussichtsturm auch eine herrliche Aussicht über die geschützte Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. Die gut 40 Kilometer lange Runde führt auch im Nabu-Kranichzentrum in Groß Mohrdorf sowie dem Kranorama in Altenpleen vorbei. Die Kraniche sind hier vorwiegend im September und Oktober zu beobachten. Im Frühling (ca. März) legen sie ebenfalls einen kurzen Stopp ein. Aber auch ausserhalb der Zugvogelzeit lohnt sich die Tour ? schon nur der einzigartigen Natur wegen.
Und auf dem Rückweg lohnt sich übrigens ein Stärkungsstopp im Café am Gutshaus Parow. Hier gibt es nicht nur leckere Kuchen, sondern zum Betrieb gehört auch ein schön assortierter Hofladen mit zahlreichen regionalen Spezialitäten.
7. Die Kulturstadt Greifswald
Unser nächstes Reiseziel ? Greifswald ? liegt ebenfalls in komfortabler Fahrraddistanz zu Stralsund. 37 (ziemlich holprige) Kilometer sind hierfür entlang der einstigen Fernstrasse 96 zurückzulegen. Alternativ lässt sich die Strecke in gut 20 Minuten mit der Bahn überwinden. Greifswald überflügelt Stralsund in puncto Einwohnerzahl um wenige 100 Personen und hält sich damit auf der Position der viertgrössten Stadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns. Kunstinteressierten dürfte Greifswald als Geburtsort und Wirkungsstätte des Malers Caspar David Friedrich ein Begriff sein. Durch das hier ansässige Pommersche Landesmuseum, die traditionsreiche Universität und verschiedene übers Jahr verteilte Kulturevents kommt es nicht von ungefähr, dass Greifswald gerne auch als «Kulturstadt» bezeichnet wird. Hier ist eigentlich immer was los ? und sei es «nur» der quirlige Wochenmarkt, der dreimal wöchentlich den Marktplatz in Beschlag nimmt.
Die kompakte, fussläufige Altstadt versprüht Kleinstadtflair und punktet gleichzeitig mit einer lebhaften Gastroszene. Auffällig sind das orthogonale Strassenraster und die auf den ersten Blick homogen wirkende Bebauung. Auf den zweiten Blick bietet Greifswald einen spannenden Mix aus Backsteingotik und einer «modernen» Stadtergänzung im Plattenbaustil. Letztere wurde nicht aufgrund von Bombenschäden initiiert, sondern in den 1970er Jahren im Rahmen eines «städtebaulichen Experiments» durchgeführt. Die Plattenbauten gliedern sich überraschend harmonisch in die historische Struktur ein und übernehmen an vielen Stellen auch Details der alten Bausubstanz (z.B aufwändig verzierte Holztüren oder Ornamente).
Drei Orte solltet ihr für euren Stadtrundgang als Fixpunkte markieren: Den Greifswalder Dom St. Nikolai (inklusive Möglichkeit zur Turmbesteigung), das didaktisch hervorragend konzipierte Pommersche Landesmuseum sowie das Caspar David Friedrich Zentrum an der Langen Strasse.
Das Caspar David Friedrich Zentrum ist auch Ausgangspunkt für den gleichnamigen Bildweg, der als knapp zweistündiger Rundgang zu den Lieblingsmotiven des Malers in der Altstadt führt oder einen als grosse Runde bis in die Wiesen bei Greifswald sowie hinaus nach Wieck leitet.
Von seiner richtig romantischen Seite zeigt sich Greifswald auf einem Abendspaziergang der alten Stadtmauer entlang via «Bleiche» und Steinbecker Brücke an den Greifswalder Hafen (Museumshafen) am Ryck. Hier treffen sich Einheimische und auswärtige Segler zu einem Drink oder einem Abendessen an Bord der Hornfischbar «Pomeria». Fischbrötchen-Fans sollten sich für eine Zwischenverpflegung zudem das «Fisch 13» im Zentrum vormerken. Hier gibt?s unter anderem den legendären «Pflaumen August» (tönt exotisch und ist es auch).
8. Das Fischerdorf Wieck
Der hübscheste und entspannteste Ortsteil von Greifswald liegt knappe fünf Kilometer flussaufwärts an der Mündung des Rycks in den Greifswalder Bodden. Hier befindet sich das rund 800 Jahre alte Fischerdorf Wieck. Dieses lässt sich entweder mittels Leihrad (auf dem Stadtgebiet von Greifswald gibt es verschiedene Leihstationen u.a. direkt neben der Touristeninformation am Markplatz) oder aber stilgerecht mit dem Kutter erreichen. Von April bis Oktober fährt das Ausflugsschiff «MS Breege» täglich vom Museumshafen im Stadtzentrum via Wieck hinaus auf den Greifswalder Bodden und retour. Eine richtig entspannende Rundfahrt, auf der sich auch das Öffnen und Schliessen der über 100-jährigen Holzklappbrücke bestens beobachten lässt.
In Wieck befindet sich auch der Gründungsort der Hansestadt Greifswald. Das Zisterzienserkloster Eldena wurde ums Jahr 1199 herum gegründet und war im Mittelalter eines der bedeutendsten Klöster der Region. «Wiederentdeckt» wurde die Klosterruine durch Caspar David Friedrich. Der Maler machte die Ruine zu einem seiner zentralen Motive seines Schaffens und verhalf ihr damit zu Weltruhm. Wer wie wir die öffentlich zugängliche Parkanlage mit der Ruine Eldena im sanften Abendlicht besucht, wird rasch verstehen, wieso dieses Bauwerk Friedrich derart in den Bann gezogen hat.
An lauen Sommerabenden lohnt es sich, etwas länger in Wieck zu verweilen und die entspannte Stimmung rund um den Hafen zu geniessen. Mit einer besonders sonnenverwöhnten Terrasse punktet das Restaurant Fischer-Hütte und leckere Kuchen gibt?s im Café Natalie.
9. Die Kaiserbäder der Insel Usedom
Keine Reise an die Mecklenburgische Ostseeküste ohne Abstecher in eines der legendären Kaiserbäder, oder?! Von Stralsund zählt der Tagesausflug ins Ostseebad Binz auf Rügen zu den Klassikern. Und von Greifswald ist es nur ein Katzensprung zu den Kaiserbäder der Insel Usedom. 1.5 Stunden dauert die Anreise mit dem Zug (inklusive Umsteigen in Züssow). Zum Abschluss unserer Ostsee-Tour wurden wir hier mit traumhaften Sonnenauf- und untergängen verwöhnt. Und den Feinschmeckern unter euch sei an dieser Stelle das mit einem Michelin-Stern ausgezeichnete «The O?Room» sowie das Gourmet-Restaurant Bernstein im Strandhotel Ostseeblick empfohlen.
Praktische Tipps für deine Reise an die Mecklenburgische Ostseeküste
Von der Schweiz aus reist man mit der täglichen Nachtzugverbindung zwischen Zürich und Hamburg am nachhaltigsten nach Norddeutschland. Von Hamburg bestehen regelmässige Zugverbindungen nach Rostock (Fahrtzeit knappe 2 Stunden). Alternativ führt die Anreise über Berlin.
Die Distanzen zwischen Rostock, Stralsund und Greifswald sind gering. Die Zugfahrt von Rostock nach Stralsund dauert knapp 50 Minuten. Von Stralsund bis nach Greifswald dauert es 20 Minuten.
Um Rostock-Travemünde zu besichtigen, solltet ihr mindestens zwei Tage einrechnen.
Die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Altstadt Stralsund hat man in einem Tag besichtigt.
Von Stralsund aus lassen sich diverse Velotouren durchs Kranichland oder auf die Insel Rügen und Retour unternehmen.
Um sowohl die Altstadt von Greifswald (inklusive des Pommerschen Landesmuseums) als auch das Fischerdorf Wieck zu besichtigen, empfiehlt es sich, zwei Tage einzuplanen.

Über 1?400 Kilometer Ostseeküste weist das Bundesland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern auf. Und entlang dieser Küste lässt sich so einiges Entdecken: geschichtsträchtige Hansestädte, noble Kaiserbäder, charmante Fischerdörfer und eine abwechslungsreiche Naturlandschaft. Eine Gegend, die fast für jeden (Urlaubs-)Geschmack etwas in petto hat. Kein Wunder, steht Mecklenburg-Vorpommern regelmässig auf dem Siegertreppchen des beliebtesten Ferienbundeslandes.
Wir haben uns diesen Spätsommer eine Woche Zeit genommen, um drei der insgesamt sechs Hansestädte Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns und ihr Umland zu besichtigen. Die Zugreise führte uns von Rostock via Stralsund bis nach Greifswald im nordöstlichsten Ecken von Deutschland. In den nachfolgenden Zeilen zeigen wir dir, wie vielfältig die Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste ist und welche Orte uns besonders gefallen haben.
Die Mecklenburgische Ostseeküste im Überblick
Die Küste Mecklenburg-Vorpommers reicht von der Travemündung bei Lübeck bis zur polnischen Grenze bei Swinemünde auf der Insel Usedom. Zu den Hansestädten mit direktem Küstenbezug zählen Wismar, Rostock, Stralsund und Greifswald. Etwas weiter im Landesinneren bzw. etwas weiter von der Küste entfernt liegen Anklam an der Peene und Demmin. Die Altstädte von Wismar und Stralsund sind im Jahr 2002 in die Liste der UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe aufgenommen worden.
Zwischen Rostock und Stralsund befindet sich die Halbinsel Fischland-Darß-Zingst, die grossteils im Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft liegt und für ihre hübschen Kapitänshäuser und die weitläufige Natur bekannt ist. Bei Stralsund schlägt die «Rügenbrücke» den Bogen über den Strelasund auf die Insel Rügen ? der Touristenmagnet schlechthin. Und östlich von Greifswald geht?s via Wolgast nach Usedom, wo SonnenanbeterInnen 40 Kilometer Sandstrand vorfinden. ¨
Die Reiseziele der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste sind so vielfältig, dass es einem bei der Ferienplanung keinesfalls leichtfällt, Prioritäten zu setzen. Soll ich einen oder zwei Tage für Rostock einplanen?Das Kranichland oder die Insel Rügen besuchen?Und lohnt sich ein Zwischenstopp in Greifswald? Mit diesen Fragen im Hinterkopf haben wir uns auf den Weg an die Ostsee gemacht.
1. Die vielen Gesichter der Hanse- und Universitätsstadt Rostock
Mit über 200?000 Einwohnern ist Rostock die grösste Stadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns. Sie ist auch diejenige Stadt mit dem grössten Hafen der deutschen Ostseeküste. Rostock versprüht einerseits Grossstadt Flair und ist andererseits überraschend alternativ. Zwei Komponenten, die ich an Städten besonders mag. Eine weitere Komponente sind die vielen «Gesichter», die Rostock heute hat. Diese zeigen sich besonders schön bei der Faulen Grube hinter der Marienkirche. Auf der einen Seite leicht schiefe, kleinteilige Fachwerkgebäude. Auf der anderen Seite die 60 Meter breite «Lange Strasse». Eine Prachtstrasse nach sowjetischem Vorbild. Gesäumt von einer Gesamtüberbauung, die in den Nachkriegsjahren im Rahmen einer grossangelegten Bauinitiative zwischen 1953 bis 1967 entstand und seit 1979 unter Denkmalschutz steht. Städtebaulich hochinteressant.
Wer verwinkelte Gassen schnurgeraden Strassenachsen vorzieht, der startet seinen Spaziergang beim Neuen Markt gegenüber vom Rathaus und folgt der Kröpeliner Strasse durch den westlichen Teil der Rostocker Altstadt via Universitätsplatz mit dem «Brunnen der Lebensfreude» bis zum imposanten Kröpeliner-Tor. Werft dabei auch einen Blick in die links und rechts angrenzenden Gassen. Dieser Spaziergang führt euch an einigen schönen Backsteinbauten vorbei. Auf der Höhe des Kulturhistorischen Museums könnt ihr zudem einen Blick auf die einstige Stadtmauer sowie die Wallanlage werfen.
Einen Zwischenstopp ist auch die Marienkirche wert. In ihrem Inneren lässt sich die älteste noch funktionierende astronomische Uhr begutachten. Ein technisches Meisterwerk aus dem Mittelalter! Hat der Spaziergang euren Appetit angeregt? Dann ist es an der Zeit für einen Abstecher in die Östliche Altstadt rund um die St.-Petri-Kirche. Hier verstecken sich mit Mademoiselle Inga, Albert & Emilie sowie den Altstädter Stuben drei der lässigsten Restaurants der Stadt.
Und falls ihr weitere (oder aktuelle) Restauranttipps benötigt, dann lohnt sich eine Kaffeepause im Café 92 Grad (oder alternativ im Café Laska, das vom selben Team betrieben wird). Die Besitzer kennen sich in der Rostocker Restaurantszene gut aus und wissen, was in Rostock gerade angesagt ist. Der Besuch der beiden Cafés lässt sich gut mit einem Bummel durch die Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt («KTV») kombinieren. Das Studenten- und Künstlerviertel punktet mit einer bunten Mischung aus Street-Art, Bars, Cafés und internationaler Küche (vietnamesisch, indisch, afghanisch, italienisch ? hier findest du alles).
Für die Besichtigung der Rostocker Altstadt inklusive KTV lohnt es sich, einen vollen Tag einzuplanen. Als Schlechtwetteralternative (oder zum Aufwärmen) bietet sich der Besuch des zentral gelegenen Kulturhistorischen Museums an. Und spätestens zur Blue Hour zeigt sich Rostock auch bei Regenwetter von seiner allerschönsten Seite.
2. Das Seebad Warnemünde
Und ich spreche aus Erfahrung. In Rostock ist das Wetterglück nämlich nicht auf unserer Seite. Auch am zweiten Tag begrüsst uns ein grau bedeckter Himmel und eine fiese kühle Brise. Schade ? denn unsere Unterkunft, das Radisson Blu am Rande der Altstadt punktet nicht nur mit zimmerhohen Fenstern, sondern auch mit einer tollen Rooftop Bar.
Auch für den heute geplanten Ausflug ins Seebad Warnemünde, einen Stadtteil von Rostock, wäre Sonnenschein passender gewesen. Zum Glück verfügt die MS «Rostocker 7» über einen behaglichen Salon inklusive modernster Be- und Entlüftungsanlage. Mit dem Flaggschiff der Rostocker Personenschifffahrt lässt sich demnach auch bei Regenwetter eine grosse Hafenrundfahrt unternehmen. Diese führt vom Stadthafen in Fussdistanz zur Altstadt via Rostocker Überseehafen nach Warnemünde.
Alternativ gelangt man auch mit der S-Bahn in rund 20 Minuten vom Hauptbahnhof Rostock nach Warnemünde. Die Hafenrundfahrt bietet aber nochmals einen neuen Blickwinkel auf die «Skyline» von Rostock.
In Warnemünde verköstigen wir uns am «Alten Strom», wo die Fischkutter anlegen, mit einem Fischbrötchen und spazieren danach der Westmole entlang bis zu dessen Leuchtturm. Direkt dahinter befindet sich die bekannteste Sehenswürdigkeit von Warnemünde: das Duo aus Teepott und Leuchtturm. Während sich am Strom und der Alexandrinenstrasse bunte Fischer- und Kapitänshäuser aneinanderreihen, finden sich an der Seestrasse mit dem Kurhaus Warnemünde (Baujahr 1928), dem Teepott (Baujahr 1968) sowie dem Hotel Neptun (Baujahr 1971) einige für das 20. Jahrhundert prägnante Bauten.

Die Velotour lohnt sich aber zu jeder Jahreszeit und bei jedem Wetter.
4. Die Stralsunder Altstadt
Nach zwei grauen Tagen in Rostock-Warnemünde fahren wir mit dem Zug weiter nach Stralsund. Die beiden Hansestädte sind ohne umzusteigen in weniger als einer Stunde mit dem öffentlichen Verkehr erreichbar. In Stralsund befindet sich der Bahnhof direkt vor den Altstadtkern umspannenden Teichen als Teil der alten Wehranlage. Mit knapp 60?000 Einwohnern ist Stralsund deutlich kleiner als Rostock. Durch seine Lage am Strelasund bzw. auf dem Weg nach Rügen und mit dem Ozeaneum als Besuchermagnet, zieht Stralsund insbesondere in der Hochsaison zahlreiche Tagestouristen an.
Wir checken hier im direkt am Wasser gelegenen Hotel Hafenresidenz ein (nirgends in Stralsund nächtigt man näher am Wasser) und begeben uns dann schnurstracks auf einen ersten Augenschein. Den besten Blick über Stralsund bietet die Marienkirche. Doch den unvergesslichen Rundblick über die Stadt erfordert etwas Schnauf. Exakt 366 Stufen wollen nämlich zuerst überwunden werden. Doch es lohnt sich!
Danach spaziert man am besten einfach kreuz und quer durch die kopfsteingepflasterten Altstadtgässchen, die sich von ihrer Grundstruktur her seit der Stadtgründung im 13. Jahrhundert kaum verändert haben. Dabei werdet ihr an einigen inhabergeführten Geschäften wie dem Fischhandel Rasmus, der den Orginal Stralsunder Bismarckhering herstellt oder der Manufaktur Treibholz, die selbst gebaute Boards sowie nachhaltig produzierte Kleider verkaufen, vorbeikommen. Ein Stopp ist auch die Museumswerkstatt der Spielkartenfabrik am Katharinenberg wert. Und wie in Rostock haben wir mit dem Café 66 und dem Café SüdWest auch in der Stralsunder Altstadt rasch zwei neue Lieblingsplätze für eine Kaffeepause (oder ein leckeres Frühstück) gefunden.
Etwas abseits von den Hauptgassen liegt das unter Denkmalschutz stehende Heilgeisthospital mit seinem bekannten Säulengang und den umliegenden hübschen Fachwerkhäuschen.
Die eindrücklichste Gebäudekulisse wird euch auf dem Alten Markt geboten. Dieser bildet das Zentrum der historischen Altstadt und wird vom Rathaus, der Nikolaikirche und weiteren imposanten Backsteinbauten gesäumt. Hier befindet sich auch die Tourismuszentrale der Hansestadt Stralsund sowie eine Welterbe-Ausstellung (Eintritt frei).
An schönen Tagen ist die Hafenkneipe «Zum Goldenen Anker» direkt neben dem schwimmenden Museumsschiff «Gorch Fock» ein beliebter Spot für den Sundowner. Kein Wunder ? bei dieser zauberhaften Abendstimmung am Strelasund.
5. Das Störtebeker Brauquartier
Wer in der Altstadt von Stralsund ein feines, gehobenes Abendessen geniessen möchte, der sollte sich das Restaurant «zum Scheele» als Tipp notieren. Ebenso lohnend ist ein Abstecher ins Störtebeker Brauquartier, das sich 10 Fahrminuten mit dem Bus ausserhalb der Altstadt befindet. Der Bierexport von Stralsund nach Dänemark und Norwegen spielte zur Zeit der Hanse eine wichtige Rolle. Die lange Tradition des Bierbrauens in Stralsund erlebt seit der Wende eine Renaissance und die Produkte der Störtebeker Braumanufaktur sind an der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste allgegenwärtig. Hier in Stralsund besteht die Möglichkeit an Brauereiführungen und Verkostungen teilzunehmen. Oder aber im Braugasthaus das passende Bier-Pairing zu einem regionalen und saisonalen Menü zu geniessen.
6. Der Nationalpark Vorpommersche Boddenküste
Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich der Ostseeküstenradweg durch unsere Reise entlang der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste. Leider fehlte uns die nötige Zeit, um die total 695 Kilometer Radweg von der Travemündung bis nach Usedom abzuradeln und gleichzeitig auch noch all die Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besichtigen. Stattdessen bauten wir bei jedem Stopp eine Radtour ins Sightseeing-Programm mit ein. Prädikat: nachahmenswert! Mit dem Rad lässt sich die spannende Natur- und Kulturlandschaft rund um die Hansestädte nämlich super entdecken.
So auch in Stralsund ? hier empfiehlt das Tourismusbüro für Tages- und Halbtagesausflüge mit dem Rad drei Rundtouren im Umland: Die Grosse Strelasundtour, eine Runde durch die Nordvorpommersche Waldlandschaft und eine Tour durch das Kranichland nordwestlich von Stralsund. Wir entscheiden uns für Letzteres und machen uns an einem sonnigen Nachmittag von Stralsund aus auf den Weg Richtung Barhöft. Dort kann man im Hotel Seeblick nicht nur fein und mit ? wie es der Name verspricht ? «Ostseeblick» speisen, sondern geniesst vom Aussichtsturm auch eine herrliche Aussicht über die geschützte Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. Die gut 40 Kilometer lange Runde führt auch im Nabu-Kranichzentrum in Groß Mohrdorf sowie dem Kranorama in Altenpleen vorbei. Die Kraniche sind hier vorwiegend im September und Oktober zu beobachten. Im Frühling (ca. März) legen sie ebenfalls einen kurzen Stopp ein. Aber auch ausserhalb der Zugvogelzeit lohnt sich die Tour ? schon nur der einzigartigen Natur wegen.
Und auf dem Rückweg lohnt sich übrigens ein Stärkungsstopp im Café am Gutshaus Parow. Hier gibt es nicht nur leckere Kuchen, sondern zum Betrieb gehört auch ein schön assortierter Hofladen mit zahlreichen regionalen Spezialitäten.
7. Die Kulturstadt Greifswald
Unser nächstes Reiseziel ? Greifswald ? liegt ebenfalls in komfortabler Fahrraddistanz zu Stralsund. 37 (ziemlich holprige) Kilometer sind hierfür entlang der einstigen Fernstrasse 96 zurückzulegen. Alternativ lässt sich die Strecke in gut 20 Minuten mit der Bahn überwinden. Greifswald überflügelt Stralsund in puncto Einwohnerzahl um wenige 100 Personen und hält sich damit auf der Position der viertgrössten Stadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns. Kunstinteressierten dürfte Greifswald als Geburtsort und Wirkungsstätte des Malers Caspar David Friedrich ein Begriff sein. Durch das hier ansässige Pommersche Landesmuseum, die traditionsreiche Universität und verschiedene übers Jahr verteilte Kulturevents kommt es nicht von ungefähr, dass Greifswald gerne auch als «Kulturstadt» bezeichnet wird. Hier ist eigentlich immer was los ? und sei es «nur» der quirlige Wochenmarkt, der dreimal wöchentlich den Marktplatz in Beschlag nimmt.
Die kompakte, fussläufige Altstadt versprüht Kleinstadtflair und punktet gleichzeitig mit einer lebhaften Gastroszene. Auffällig sind das orthogonale Strassenraster und die auf den ersten Blick homogen wirkende Bebauung. Auf den zweiten Blick bietet Greifswald einen spannenden Mix aus Backsteingotik und einer «modernen» Stadtergänzung im Plattenbaustil. Letztere wurde nicht aufgrund von Bombenschäden initiiert, sondern in den 1970er Jahren im Rahmen eines «städtebaulichen Experiments» durchgeführt. Die Plattenbauten gliedern sich überraschend harmonisch in die historische Struktur ein und übernehmen an vielen Stellen auch Details der alten Bausubstanz (z.B aufwändig verzierte Holztüren oder Ornamente).
Drei Orte solltet ihr für euren Stadtrundgang als Fixpunkte markieren: Den Greifswalder Dom St. Nikolai (inklusive Möglichkeit zur Turmbesteigung), das didaktisch hervorragend konzipierte Pommersche Landesmuseum sowie das Caspar David Friedrich Zentrum an der Langen Strasse.
Das Caspar David Friedrich Zentrum ist auch Ausgangspunkt für den gleichnamigen Bildweg, der als knapp zweistündiger Rundgang zu den Lieblingsmotiven des Malers in der Altstadt führt oder einen als grosse Runde bis in die Wiesen bei Greifswald sowie hinaus nach Wieck leitet.
Von seiner richtig romantischen Seite zeigt sich Greifswald auf einem Abendspaziergang der alten Stadtmauer entlang via «Bleiche» und Steinbecker Brücke an den Greifswalder Hafen (Museumshafen) am Ryck. Hier treffen sich Einheimische und auswärtige Segler zu einem Drink oder einem Abendessen an Bord der Hornfischbar «Pomeria». Fischbrötchen-Fans sollten sich für eine Zwischenverpflegung zudem das «Fisch 13» im Zentrum vormerken. Hier gibt?s unter anderem den legendären «Pflaumen August» (tönt exotisch und ist es auch).
8. Das Fischerdorf Wieck
Der hübscheste und entspannteste Ortsteil von Greifswald liegt knappe fünf Kilometer flussaufwärts an der Mündung des Rycks in den Greifswalder Bodden. Hier befindet sich das rund 800 Jahre alte Fischerdorf Wieck. Dieses lässt sich entweder mittels Leihrad (auf dem Stadtgebiet von Greifswald gibt es verschiedene Leihstationen u.a. direkt neben der Touristeninformation am Markplatz) oder aber stilgerecht mit dem Kutter erreichen. Von April bis Oktober fährt das Ausflugsschiff «MS Breege» täglich vom Museumshafen im Stadtzentrum via Wieck hinaus auf den Greifswalder Bodden und retour. Eine richtig entspannende Rundfahrt, auf der sich auch das Öffnen und Schliessen der über 100-jährigen Holzklappbrücke bestens beobachten lässt.
In Wieck befindet sich auch der Gründungsort der Hansestadt Greifswald. Das Zisterzienserkloster Eldena wurde ums Jahr 1199 herum gegründet und war im Mittelalter eines der bedeutendsten Klöster der Region. «Wiederentdeckt» wurde die Klosterruine durch Caspar David Friedrich. Der Maler machte die Ruine zu einem seiner zentralen Motive seines Schaffens und verhalf ihr damit zu Weltruhm. Wer wie wir die öffentlich zugängliche Parkanlage mit der Ruine Eldena im sanften Abendlicht besucht, wird rasch verstehen, wieso dieses Bauwerk Friedrich derart in den Bann gezogen hat.
An lauen Sommerabenden lohnt es sich, etwas länger in Wieck zu verweilen und die entspannte Stimmung rund um den Hafen zu geniessen. Mit einer besonders sonnenverwöhnten Terrasse punktet das Restaurant Fischer-Hütte und leckere Kuchen gibt?s im Café Natalie.
9. Die Kaiserbäder der Insel Usedom
Keine Reise an die Mecklenburgische Ostseeküste ohne Abstecher in eines der legendären Kaiserbäder, oder?! Von Stralsund zählt der Tagesausflug ins Ostseebad Binz auf Rügen zu den Klassikern. Und von Greifswald ist es nur ein Katzensprung zu den Kaiserbäder der Insel Usedom. 1.5 Stunden dauert die Anreise mit dem Zug (inklusive Umsteigen in Züssow). Zum Abschluss unserer Ostsee-Tour wurden wir hier mit traumhaften Sonnenauf- und untergängen verwöhnt. Und den Feinschmeckern unter euch sei an dieser Stelle das mit einem Michelin-Stern ausgezeichnete «The O?Room» sowie das Gourmet-Restaurant Bernstein im Strandhotel Ostseeblick empfohlen.
Praktische Tipps für deine Reise an die Mecklenburgische Ostseeküste
Von der Schweiz aus reist man mit der täglichen Nachtzugverbindung zwischen Zürich und Hamburg am nachhaltigsten nach Norddeutschland. Von Hamburg bestehen regelmässige Zugverbindungen nach Rostock (Fahrtzeit knappe 2 Stunden). Alternativ führt die Anreise über Berlin.
Die Distanzen zwischen Rostock, Stralsund und Greifswald sind gering. Die Zugfahrt von Rostock nach Stralsund dauert knapp 50 Minuten. Von Stralsund bis nach Greifswald dauert es 20 Minuten.
Um Rostock-Travemünde zu besichtigen, solltet ihr mindestens zwei Tage einrechnen.
Die Sehenswürdigkeiten der Altstadt Stralsund hat man in einem Tag besichtigt.
Von Stralsund aus lassen sich diverse Velotouren durchs Kranichland oder auf die Insel Rügen und Retour unternehmen.
Um sowohl die Altstadt von Greifswald (inklusive des Pommerschen Landesmuseums) als auch das Fischerdorf Wieck zu besichtigen, empfiehlt es sich, zwei Tage einzuplanen.

Die touristische Hochsaison konzentriert sich an der Mecklenburgischen Ostseeküste auf die Monate Juni bis August. Ausserhalb der Hochsaison hält sich der Besucheransturm meist in Grenzen.

XYZ Films has acquired North American sales rights to ?Indemnity,? an action thriller from South African director Travis Taute that?s set to world premiere at Montreal?s Fantasia Film Festival.
Written and directed by Taute, ?Indemnity? tells the story of an ex-firefighter in Cape Town who?s forced to fight for his life after being accused of murdering his wife. Starring Jarrid Geduld, Nicole Fortuin and Andre Jacobs, pic is produced by Benjamin Overmeyer and Bradley Joshua for Gambit Films, the South African production outfit behind the Netflix series ?Blood and Water? and the Fantasia prize winner ?Number 37.?
??Indemnity? is, at its very core, a simple and poetic journey of one man?s attempt at redemption in the wake of a devastating trauma,? said Taute. ?It was conceived as a vehicle to shine a spotlight on the importance of mental health and deliver sobering insight into the destructive nature of toxic masculinity.?
The film follows Theo Abrams, a former firefighter from Cape Town suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder who wakes up one morning beside his wife?s dead body. With no memory of what transpired and all evidence pointing to him as the murderer, Abrams sets out to prove his innocence, uncovering proof along the way of a global conspiracy that not only threatens his life but could change the course of the nation forever.
?It was important for me to demonstrate, through Theo?s journey, the ability of the human spirit to endure and survive unimaginable tragedy,? said Taute. ?To paint an intimate portrait of one man?s psychological struggle against the backdrop of a thrilling, investigative plot that sees him traverse across a contemporary Cape Town landscape in a relentless, pulse-pounding pursuit of the truth.?
The writer-director called his feature debut a ?love letter? to some of his favorite genre films of the ?90s and ?00s, such as ?The Fugitive? and ?Enemy of the State,? which he described as ?highly entertaining action vehicles that were driven by character and not spectacle, grounded in realism and embedded with topical social commentary that made them really resonate.?

XYZ Films previously repped ?Number 37,? the buzzy feature debut of director Nosipho Dumisa, which premiered at SXSW before winning the best director award at Fantasia in 2018. The film was picked up by Dark Star Pictures for a North American theatrical release.

In them, different personalities posed in interactions with a luminous silhouette in the center of the frame. This is the only light source in the photos, different from the ?norm? of the light points behind the camera and in the background of the subject. “UNI portrays the human through a single silhouette of light, a collective aura that equals us by illuminating our diversity. It’s not just a portrait. It is the record of an existence, of everything that we represent, of everything that we positively transform in the world?, says Orion.
The personalities he chose to perpetuate with the luminous silhouette are three musicians whose works echo these ideals of diversity and representation: Rico Dalasam, Larissa Light e Creole. Música Pavę: How was the choice of the musicians to make up the exhibition? What is your relationship to the sound they make?
Alexander Orion: Criolo is a genius brother. A guy with so much geography, life and friends in common. It was the first portrayed in this series. All musicians in this first edition of UNI represent the flow from the periphery to the center. Music always anticipates this movement, has this ability to cross walls. I hope culture in general will follow this flow.
MP: Light is also a metaphor for ideas, inspiration and creativity. How much these artists you light up?
Orion: André, I am enlightened by art. It’s no wonder that this gloomy government that we have today systematically attacks culture and the arts. It’s because art is really liberating. Culture feeds the soul and expands the spirit. I’m inspired by music, literature, cinema, all forms of art, not necessarily the one in which I work. In fact, Art is only one, there wouldn’t be cinema if it weren’t for literature, there wouldn’t be photography if it weren’t for painting. Light is not just inspiration, it is that aura, that vital energy that transforms the world, that directs humanity to lighter, more loving, more fraternal steps. The artists portrayed here are just some of the great agents of this change that is being built.
MP: What is it like to portray people in such a playful way in an age of selfies?
Orion: I always liked the review. From critical thinking. But, in this moment that we are living, the critic is emptied. As valid as it is, in the face of so much smokescreen and false information, it has lost the ability to bring about real change. In this scenario, I made this choice: I want to portray people, show how beautiful they are, highlight what they do well, what they can inspire in a good way.
