Senate finance committee chairman Ron Wyden, D-Ore., Released a bill on Tuesday to revise a controversial corporate deduction that was part of the 2017 Republicans’ sweeping tax legislation.
Currently, what is known as the Qualified Operating Income Deduction, also known as 199A, allows certain businesses, such as sole proprietorships, partnerships, and S corporations to write off up to 20% of net income.
The bill would progressively abolish tax breaks for households earning more than $ 400,000 a year and deliver on President Joe Biden’s election promise, Wyden told reporters in a phone call.
At the same time, the proposal also expands the eligibility for depreciation by removing “extremely arbitrary restrictions” on which industries qualify, he said.

In 2021, individuals earning less than $ 164,900 or married couples filing together who earn less than $ 329,800 may be eligible for the full 20% deduction.
However, households earning above these thresholds can only claim part of the deduction and some types of businesses forfeit their eligibility altogether.
For example, so-called service professions or companies – which include health, law, financial services and more – do not qualify above certain income levels.
Wyden’s exit starts at over $ 400,000, eliminating the $ 500,000 deduction entirely.

“There is an opportunity here to generate significant income while not raising taxes for small businesses on Main Street,” said Wyden.
The proposal comes as Democrats continue to seek to pay for priorities like education, health insurance, childcare, paid vacation, green energy, and more.
President Joe Biden is open to new ideas on how taxes can be increased on the rich as long as it doesn’t affect those on less than $ 400,000, according to a White House official.
Although U.S. pass-through businesses include small and large companies, Wyden pointed out that the tax break could benefit wealthy Americans disproportionately.
“Half of the money won goes to millionaires, and because the upside is so upside down, many of the small business owners on Main Street have actually been foreclosed,” he said.
Households with higher incomes receive a larger share of the passed through business tax break than the middle class, according to a report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
In addition, according to a report by the Joint Tax Committee, 61% of benefits could go to the top 1% of families by 2024.
Although some small business groups support the bill, others as well as Republican lawmakers can oppose the bill.
“Sen. Wyden’s proposal to limit small business withholding and raise small business taxes is the wrong plan at the wrong time,” said Kevin Kuhlman, vice president of government relations for the National Federation of Independent Businesses in Nashville.
A reduction in the qualified income withholding would directly affect the ability of small businesses to hire people, invest in their businesses, increase compensation and threaten the fragile economic recovery, he said.
The current deduction will expire after 2025 without an extension by Congress.

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it was releasing a Windows 11 update that includes its chat function for talking to friends and family about Microsoft Teams. People who are already testing Windows 11 through the Windows Insider Program can try the chat software before Windows 11 is generally available to everyone later this year.
Adding the component to Windows could lead to greater adoption from teams that grew in popularity during the coronavirus pandemic. As more people start using Teams, the software could become a more valuable part of the office suite that currently makes up most of Microsoft’s business.
Users can access the chat feature by typing the Win-C keyboard shortcut (formerly the keyboard shortcut to access the Cortana virtual assistant) from any screen in Windows 11, Brandon LeBlanc, a senior program manager at Microsoft, wrote in a Blog post. An icon is also available in the system tray. Once the chat window is open, it is possible to open the full-fledged Microsoft Teams app, which has been redesigned for Windows 11.
Initially, users will only be available to participate in one-on-one and group chats. Support for voice and video calling and other features will come later, LeBlanc wrote, and so far chat has only been localized for English-language devices and configured for the US. It is only being introduced to a limited number of insiders so far.
Not everyone needs to be on Teams to exchange messages with people using chat in Windows 11. When someone using chat sends a message to someone who isn’t on Teams, the recipient will receive the message in an email or text message. and Microsoft will offer an option to join teams, LeBlanc wrote. And it is possible to synchronize Skype and Outlook contacts.
Microsoft added pre-installed Skype apps to Windows 10 in 2015, and last year after the pandemic hit, the company tried to make it easy for people to make Skype calls from Windows with a Meet Now feature. With Windows 11, the focus is instead on Teams, which had 145 million daily active users as of April.
If more people start using Teams as chat as a result of the inclusion in Windows 11, it could pose new challenges for competitors including Slack and Zoom.
“Today Microsoft announced that it would bundle teams with Windows and Office,” said Slack on the day Microsoft announced Windows 11. “Our reaction is simple: choice is better than lock-in, open is better than closed. VAN HORN, Texas – On Tuesday, Jeff Bezos wasn’t the richest man in the world for 10 minutes and 10 seconds.
His company Blue Origin brought him into space history on Tuesday. His first manned New Shepard rocket launched for the short flight out of the Texas desert and also carried his brother and the oldest and youngest people to have ever flown in space.
“Best day ever!” said Bezos after touching up. “My expectations were high and were dramatically exceeded.”

The capsule with the crew of Blue Origin accelerated to more than three times the speed of sound before reaching the 80-kilometer limit (about 50 miles) with which the US marks the edge of space. The crew capsule reached an altitude of 107 kilometers (66 miles) and the missile reached a top speed of 2,233 miles per hour during launch.
The crew hovered in weightlessness for a few minutes before the capsule returned and landed under a set of parachutes, completing the mission after 10 minutes and 10 seconds.
The launch marked Blue Origin’s entry into the private space market, joining Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic – its direct competitor in the suborbital tourism sector – and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
“This is a tiny little step from what Blue Origin will do,” Bezos told CNBC’s Morgan Brennan after landing. “What we’re really trying to do is build reusable spacecraft. This is the only way we can build a road to space, and we have to build a road to space so our children can build the future.”

Branson congratulated Bezos after the mission.
“Well done,” tweeted Branson. “Impressive! All the best to the entire crew of me and the entire team of @virgingalactic”
In addition to his unique fortune, Bezos, 57, is also the sole founder of space to operate his company’s first manned flight. While SpaceX and Virgin Galactic have already launched astronauts, Bezos is the first to embark on the first crew flight.
Also on the flight were Wally Funk, 82, and Oliver Daemen, 18 – the oldest and youngest people ever to have flown in space – and Bezos’ brother Mark, 53.
“I’ve waited a long time for it to finally be up there,” said Funk after his return to Earth. “I want to go again – quickly.”

Bezos invited his brother and Funk, a space pioneer, to join the flight. Daemen was a late addition. His seat was originally part of a public auction, but the auction winner, an anonymous person who bid $ 28 million to fly Bezos, was unable to meet the July 20th launch date. Daemen’s father Joes, CEO of a private equity firm in the Netherlands, was also a bidder, with Daemen being the paying passenger on Blue Origin’s second crew launch. When the mysterious bidder stepped down, the company rescheduled Daemen to start first.
The launch on Tuesday also occurred on another historic milestone – the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
The launch of New Shepard marks a milestone in the Bezos vision. He founded Blue Origin with the goal of “creating a future where millions of people in space live and work to help the earth”.
The New Shepard rocket and the capsule on it are reusable and can take off, land and start again multiple times. The missile system is in many ways a trailblazer for other, larger Blue Origin projects – like the New Glenn orbital rocket.

Like New Shepard, the New Glenn rocket booster is designed to be reusable, with the company expecting each one to take off and land 25 times. New Glenn, with a first launch date for late 2022, is about 320 feet tall and is expected to lift nearly 50 tons of payload into low earth orbit. The rockets are named after Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard and John Glenn, the first American in space and the first American to orbit Earth. In 1998, Senator Glenn, then 77, became the oldest person in space.
Blue Origin has also developed several engines to power its two rockets, including the BE-3, BE-4, and BE-7 engines.
Blue Origin is testing one of the BE-4 rocket engines the company is developing for the launch of its New Glenn rocket.

Blue Origin is also working on a manned lander called the Blue Moon, which the company hopes will one day bring astronauts and cargo to the lunar surface.

The company’s only direct competition in the market for bringing space tourists to the edge of space is Branson’s Virgin Galactic, a sector known as suborbital tourism. SpaceX is preparing to launch its first private mission called Inspiration4 in September, but Musk’s company is sending its capsules further into space on multi-day flights, known as orbital tourism.
Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic developed rocket-powered starships, but that’s where the similarities end. As Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket launches vertically, Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo system is deployed into the air and returns to Earth like an airplane gliding for a runway landing.
And while Blue Origin takes off autonomously, the Virgin Galactic system is flown by two pilots. Branson’s company has so far conducted four test flights in space but does not expect to fly paying customers before 2022.
Blue Origin’s auction raised $ 28 million, but a seat on a suborbital spaceship is usually much cheaper. Virgin Galactic has historically sold reservations between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000 per ticket and recently billed the Italian Air Force about $ 500,000 per ticket for a training room flight.
The tourism market is a thriving part of the space economy valued at more than $ 420 billion. Yet its high standing – given the much more exciting human element – means it has a strong and far-reaching impact on the space industry, with investors often pointing to astronaut flights to add to excitement about the broader impact of the alien market.

The capsule with the crew of Blue Origin accelerated to more than three times the speed of sound before reaching the 80-kilometer limit (about 50 miles) with which the US marks the edge of space. The crew capsule reached an altitude of 107 kilometers (66 miles) and the missile reached a top speed of 2,233 miles per hour during launch.
The crew hovered in weightlessness for a few minutes before the capsule returned and landed under a set of parachutes, completing the mission after 10 minutes and 10 seconds.
The launch marked Blue Origin’s entry into the private space market, joining Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic – its direct competitor in the suborbital tourism sector – and Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
“This is a tiny little step from what Blue Origin will do,” Bezos told CNBC’s Morgan Brennan after landing. “What we’re really trying to do is build reusable spacecraft. This is the only way we can build a road to space, and we have to build a road to space so our children can build the future.”

Branson congratulated Bezos after the mission.
“Well done,” tweeted Branson. “Impressive! All the best to the entire crew of me and the entire team of @virgingalactic”
In addition to his unique fortune, Bezos, 57, is also the sole founder of space to operate his company’s first manned flight. While SpaceX and Virgin Galactic have already launched astronauts, Bezos is the first to embark on the first crew flight.
Also on the flight were Wally Funk, 82, and Oliver Daemen, 18 – the oldest and youngest people ever to have flown in space – and Bezos’ brother Mark, 53.
“I’ve waited a long time for it to finally be up there,” said Funk after his return to Earth. “I want to go again – quickly.”

Bezos invited his brother and Funk, a space pioneer, to join the flight. Daemen was a late addition. His seat was originally part of a public auction, but the auction winner, an anonymous person who bid $ 28 million to fly Bezos, was unable to meet the July 20th launch date. Daemen’s father Joes, CEO of a private equity firm in the Netherlands, was also a bidder, with Daemen being the paying passenger on Blue Origin’s second crew launch. When the mysterious bidder stepped down, the company rescheduled Daemen to start first.
The launch on Tuesday also occurred on another historic milestone – the 52nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
The launch of New Shepard marks a milestone in the Bezos vision. He founded Blue Origin with the goal of “creating a future where millions of people in space live and work to help the earth”.
The New Shepard rocket and the capsule on it are reusable and can take off, land and start again multiple times. The missile system is in many ways a trailblazer for other, larger Blue Origin projects – like the New Glenn orbital rocket.

Like New Shepard, the New Glenn rocket booster is designed to be reusable, with the company expecting each one to take off and land 25 times. New Glenn, with a first launch date for late 2022, is about 320 feet tall and is expected to lift nearly 50 tons of payload into low earth orbit. The rockets are named after Mercury astronauts Alan Shepard and John Glenn, the first American in space and the first American to orbit Earth. In 1998, Senator Glenn, then 77, became the oldest person in space.
Blue Origin has also developed several engines to power its two rockets, including the BE-3, BE-4, and BE-7 engines.
Blue Origin is testing one of the BE-4 rocket engines the company is developing for the launch of its New Glenn rocket.

Blue Origin is also working on a manned lander called the Blue Moon, which the company hopes will one day bring astronauts and cargo to the lunar surface.

The company’s only direct competition in the market for bringing space tourists to the edge of space is Branson’s Virgin Galactic, a sector known as suborbital tourism. SpaceX is preparing to launch its first private mission called Inspiration4 in September, but Musk’s company is sending its capsules further into space on multi-day flights, known as orbital tourism.
Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic developed rocket-powered starships, but that’s where the similarities end. As Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket launches vertically, Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo system is deployed into the air and returns to Earth like an airplane gliding for a runway landing.
And while Blue Origin takes off autonomously, the Virgin Galactic system is flown by two pilots. Branson’s company has so far conducted four test flights in space but does not expect to fly paying customers before 2022.
Blue Origin’s auction raised $ 28 million, but a seat on a suborbital spaceship is usually much cheaper. Virgin Galactic has historically sold reservations between $ 200,000 and $ 250,000 per ticket and recently billed the Italian Air Force about $ 500,000 per ticket for a training room flight.
The tourism market is a thriving part of the space economy valued at more than $ 420 billion. Yet its high standing – given the much more exciting human element – means it has a strong and far-reaching impact on the space industry, with investors often pointing to astronaut flights to add to excitement about the broader impact of the alien market.

2022 GMC Hummer EV Sport Utility Truck “Edition 1”

DETROIT – General Motors confirmed on Monday that it will offer at least three large electric pickup trucks in the coming years as excitement about the segment continues to grow.
The Detroit-based automaker’s latest announcement is a full-size electric pickup truck for its GMC truck and SUV brand. It is followed by the GMC Hummer EV, which is expected to ship later this year, and the confirmation of an electric Chevrolet Silverado in April.
“I am very confident that GMC will be a big winner in this area,” said Duncan Aldred, GMC’s global director, during a digital media event Monday. Aldred said the vehicle was “fairly advanced” in its planning but declined to disclose the vehicle’s timing.
General Motors plans to produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup at its new flagship electric vehicle assembly plant, which is under construction in Detroit. The automaker posted this teaser image of the vehicle name with an “E” highlighted in blue.

The full-size GMC electric pickup is expected to be more of a traditional pickup than a “lifestyle” vehicle like the upcoming GMC Hummer EV, which costs between roughly $ 80,000 and $ 111,000. Aldred declined to say if the new pickup will be named Sierra – the name of his current full-size traditional pickup.
The electric pickups are part of GM’s plan to launch 30 new electric vehicles worldwide by 2025 to invest $ 35 billion in electric and autonomous vehicles. Until then, the company wants to sell at least 1 million electric cars a year – on the way to becoming a fully electric car manufacturer by 2035.
GM is expected to be among the first automakers to offer an electric pickup later this year. Others are electric vehicle startups like Rivian and Lordstown Motors, followed by Tesla and Ford Motor later this year, possibly next year, through mid-2022. Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler, recently confirmed it will have an electric ram by 2024 -Pickup will offer.
Despite the amount of electric pickups expected in the coming years, it remains a completely untested market. No major automaker has ever sold such a vehicle.
Automakers are optimistic in this segment due to the popularity of pickup trucks with fleet / commercial buyers as well as the amount of reported consumer reservations for the vehicles already featured.
Less than a year after its debut, Tesla announced in September that it had received well over 500,000 orders for its Cybertruck. Ford announced this month that it has received more than 100,000 reservations for its F-150 Lightning electric pickup since the vehicle debuted in mid-May. Orders are $ 100 deposits that are fully refundable so they may not convert directly into sales.
“Are we confident that we can win in this environment? Absolutely we do. I think we’re already showing our excellence in electrification; that’s what we did through Hummer EV,” said Aldred.

The Pentagon said Monday it had returned a Moroccan citizen from Guantanamo Bay to his home country, the first such release under President Joe Biden, who has vowed to close the prison facility.
The transfer of Abdullatif Nasser to Morocco left 39 prisoners in the island prison off the east coast of Cuba. His transfer follows a panel decision in 2016 that found that the alleged former al-Qaida member no longer needs to be detained by the US in order to protect US national security.
Nasser’s lawyer hailed his transfer.
“This is a hugely welcome event. I am still shocked about it,” said attorney Shelby Sullivan-Bennis in a brief telephone interview.
The release of Nasser, in his 50s, reflects the ping-ponging of presidential policy in Guantanamo Bay.
President George W. Bush established the detention center in 2002 after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Nearly 800 people were arrested at one point or another on the premises.
When the prison camp became known for torture and other human rights abuses, former President Barack Obama tried to close it down. Obama’s failure to do so has become one of the administration’s most notable unfulfilled promises.
“I’m so happy that the promises made by the Biden administration have come true while those of the Obama administration have not been fulfilled,” said Sullivan-Bennis.
Obama’s successor, former President Donald Trump, reversed the Obama-era government stance and issued an executive order to keep Guantanamo open. Only one prisoner was transferred under Trump.
Nasser, whose name is also transcribed as Abdul Latif Nasir, had been imprisoned in Guantanamo since 2002. While a government body known as the Periodic Review Board recommended in 2016 that he be transferred to Morocco subject to certain assurances regarding safety and humane treatment, the process under Obama could not be completed, the Pentagon said.
The Pentagon did not say whether Nasser will be arrested in Morocco. He was not immediately available for comment from his attorney. The Associated Press reported that police arrested him after he arrived in Morocco and said they were investigating him on suspicion of terrorist acts – although he was never charged in Guantanamo.
Sullivan-Bennis said she understood that her client was briefly detained in Morocco and then allowed to go home within an hour.
“Amazingly on time for Eid,” she said in a written message, referring to the Muslim religious holiday that began Monday evening.
“The United States commends the Kingdom of Morocco for its longstanding partnership in safeguarding the national security interests of both countries,” said a statement from the Defense Department. “The United States is also extremely grateful for the willingness of the Kingdom to support the ongoing US efforts to close the Guantanamo Bay Detention Center.”
The Justice Department declined to comment.
