After 5 years of research, Wageningen had to conclude that the ‘potential new gold’ was not commercially viable for Dutch greenhouse growers. Flowering, pollination, yield and disease burden proved to be insufficiently manageable for a profitable business case.

Rob Baan of Koppert Cress didn’t care about that. He built his multi-million dollar company around challenges that seemed too ambitious or too far-fetched. Baan’s motto: in an expensive country, you make expensive products. For example, he was the first to switch to LED lighting for his micro vegetables and he has a test greenhouse in which he experiments with countless plants in order to arrive at new taste sensations. There was once a vanilla plant among them.

Triggered by the fragile nature of vanilla cultivation in Madagascar (in 2017 the entire crop was lost to hurricanes, resulting in huge price increases) and the fact that you always buy unripe pods, Rob Baan decided that there could be better way. “So we started producing vanilla in Dutch greenhouses. Only in this way can you simulate the ideal growing climate year-round without risky natural conditions and without pesticides or other chemical agents. The result? Four to five thousand square meters of beautiful, rich and the highest quality fat vanilla pods.?

Why did Baan succeed where Wageningen had to throw in the towel? “We have a great collaboration with an experienced orchid grower”, says Baan. “Two family businesses together have the cultivation under control, can add value and had the goal and dream to grow the best (premium) vanilla for a target group (chefs, professionals) with high demands. We have developed a special cultivation system that minimizes risks and created the most optimal greenhouse conditions to make a resilient plant.”

The Planifolia vanilla grown by Koppert Cress is an orchid variety that produces pods after 3 years. The range consists of Planifolia Green, -Black and -Red. The green vanilla pods are a seasonal product, fresh from the plant, something that is still completely unknown in the Netherlands. They are available in the spring and offer buyers every opportunity to experiment with ‘curing’ the pod (drying and treating, such as fermenting).

The dark brown, almost black pods are picked by hand by Koppert Cress and cured under optimal conditions. They are available year round. The red pods are ‘vine riped’ on the plant. This provides unprecedented culinary possibilities. Master Patissier Hidde de Brabander, who was involved in the process as a taste professional, is wildly enthusiastic: “You get what you see with Koppert Cress vanilla. A beautiful, full, thick stick with a lot of content, lots of aroma and a high glucovanillin content. .Definitely the plant-aged vanilla, the red one, that’s real out of this world, with specific notes of flowers, freshness, red fruit and butterscotch.”

Emilia Clarke I fought for several years with her illness. The actress confessed a few months ago that she had suffered two aneurysms while filming Game of Thrones in a personal letter published in the magazine New Yorker that went viral during the last blows of the fantasy series pica de HBO. Clarke, who had kept her health problems hidden, has now confirmed that, while playing Daenerys Targaryen It gets really bad on the set.

A disease that became a silent traveling companion

According to Clarke, the first aneurysm struck him just as filming ended on the first season of Game of Thrones in 2011, when he was barely 24 years old. A few years later, he suffered the second. It was in 2013, while representing Breakfast with diamonds in a theater of Broadway, when a brain scan took her to the emergency room. It was a dark time, in which the interpreter had to keep his delicate health a secret. The reasons are various. On the one hand, his private life has always been kept out of his public fame, and on the other, was afraid of condemning the series that had bet on her to failure. In the book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon, A compilation of testimonies and interviews in which various leaders of the saga explain and comment on various aspects of the conception and filming of Game of Thrones, Emilia Clarke reveals how she managed to hide the disease, living with its consequences. And all this while the press and fans began to generate great pressure and anxiety.

“At that time I felt like a rubber band was squeezing my brain. I went to the bathroom, fell to my knees and began to vomit violently and voluminously as the pain got worse, “he confessed in the 2019 article. “During the ride to the hospital, I constantly repeated my lines of dialogue like Daenerys to calm myself down”, he adds about his first ailment. In all that time, no one in the Game of Thrones production knew what had happened. Bryan Cogman, co-executive producer and responsible for some of the best scripts in the series, was unaware of Emilia’s situation. “Very few people knew what had happened. I had no idea, “she admits. Pain and fear were a constant in Emilia’s life during those years. Playing Daenerys de la Tormenta was a physical and mental challenge for her, even more so in a series that was gathering millions of viewers around the planet.

The Tunisian government announced, Wednesday, January 12, the establishment of a night curfew for at least two weeks in the face of a meteoric resumption of the Covid-19 epidemic in the country. In Switzerland, the duration of isolation in case of contamination has been halved, in order to cope with a wave of infections which threatens to paralyze the economy.

The pandemic has killed at least 5,503,347 people around the world since the end of December 2019, according to a report established by Agence France-Presse on Wednesday from official sources.

In absolute terms, the United States is the most bereaved country with 842,322 deaths, followed by Brazil (620,238), India (484,655) and Russia (318,432 deaths). Among the hardest hit countries, Peru is the one with the highest death toll relative to its population, followed by Bosnia and Hungary.

However, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19, that the toll of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially recorded.

“To cope with the evolution of the epidemic”, the Tunisian government announced “A curfew from 10 p.m. (local time) until 5 a.m. (local time), implemented by the regional authorities depending on the rate of infection”, according to an official statement.

The measures, which will be in effect from Thursday, are valid “For a renewable period of two weeks”. The government, on the basis of recommendations from the scientific council, has also asked to “Postpone or cancel” all public gatherings or events, “Whether in open or closed spaces”.

Tunisia will, moreover, also intensify “Vaccination operations” and ensuring that the population takes their booster doses. The country had managed to control the situation thanks to a mass vaccination campaign, which has run out of steam lately. Just over six million people are fully vaccinated, or nearly 52% of the population, according to the Johns Hopkins University Covid-19 Research Center.

Health border controls will also be strengthened, with systematic tests on people entering the country and a recommendation not to go to the most contaminated areas of the country. Finally, the government calls for better respect for health measures such as wearing a mask, physical distance and ventilation of closed spaces.

Since December 22, Tunisia has implemented a vaccine pass for access to public buildings and shopping centers. It is supposed to also apply in cafes and restaurants, but many do not enforce it.

After a rate of contamination of 100 to 200 new cases per day in December, since the beginning of the year, Tunisia has seen contagions, counting between 1,500 and 2,000 new cases per day.

The Swiss health authorities on Tuesday, January 11, gave their agreement to the reduction, by two, of the isolation period in the event of contamination with Covid-19, which thus goes from ten to five days, announced on Wednesday the government. . This measure was taken when tens of thousands of people are infected every day in Switzerland with the highly contagious Omicron variant.

Authorities fear this wave will overwhelm the health system in a country where only two-thirds of the population have received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine and only 30% have had a booster.

The government has also proposed to extend until the end of March the restrictions to limit social interactions, reinforced last month, while trying to avoid new lockdowns as well as the vaccination obligation, put in place by neighboring Austria. .

Excluding food and energy costs, which tend to be more volatile even in non-pandemic times, inflation rose to 5.5% between December 2020 and December 2021. This is the largest annual jump since February 1991 Furthermore, it was a much faster pace than in November, when core inflation stood at 4.9%.

Could inflation benefit some people? 1:03

For its part, the food price index increased 6.3%, while the energy cost index rose 29.3% last year.

Now, even though prices soared in 2021, they are still not close to the all-time highs of the 1980s. Inflation peaked in the spring of 1980 at 14.8% without seasonal adjustments, 14 , 6% with adjustments.

In the month of December alone, prices rose 0.5%, adjusted for seasonal changes. It was a bit more than economists predicted, but it represents a decline from the 0.8% monthly increase in November.

What went up in price?

Home price trackers, as well as used cars and trucks, were the biggest contributors to December’s cost hikes.

Food prices also increased, at 0.5%, but at a slightly slower pace than in recent months. Costs grew in almost all major grocery categories, with the prices of fruits and vegetables increasing the most.

Energy costs decreased 0.4%, marking the first monthly reduction since April 2021.

“Unfortunately, energy prices rebounded in January after a temporary omicron hit in December,” said Action Economics chief economist Mike Englund. He also expects 12-month inflation data to continue to trend upward until at least February, the data of which will be released in March.

Interest rates

Since mid-December, the Federal Reserve has warned that it expects to raise interest rates in 2022 more than projected in September. The US central bank, which first announced in November that it was “reducing” its monthly asset purchases, said at the time that it will do so at a faster pace.

2022 begins and the list of films that awaits us this year is quite interesting and extensive, so we could not stay with only 10 and we decided that 20 covers most of the most anticipated titles of this year. The list ranges from Martin Scorceses, David Fincher, Alejandro González Iñarritu, to Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Björk, Bad Bunny and the comic films that most attract our attention.

Some films that we do not include in this list have already been released in international markets and will arrive in the coming weeks in time for the season of awards such as Nightmare Alley, Belfast, Benedetta, Belle or Spencer. Others like John Wick 4 and Indiana Jones 5 have already been delayed to 2023. And others like Morbious, Aquaman 2 and Wakanda Forever are not so excited yet, but they may give us a big surprise.

20 ? Thor: Love and Thunder.

Taika Waititi returns to the director’s chair after the surprise and hilarious Thor: Ragnarok. Chris Hemworth is one of the few original Avengers left in the MCU and returns with Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Jaimie Alexander, Karen Gilan, Chris Pratt and incorporates names like Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.

19 – Cyrano.

Joe Wright, director of films such as Pride and Prejudice (2005), Atonement, Desire and Sin (2007), Hanna (2011) and The Darkest Hours (2017), returns with a Cyrano de Bergerac musical starring Peter Dinklage. The advancement of this film aroused great interest in the last Cinemacon and is presented as one of the possible big surprises of this year.

8 – Bard.

7 ? Lightyear.

3- Avatar 2.

This movie has been delayed for nearly a decade, but James Cameron promises the wait has been worth it. Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang return and Kate Winslet and Michelle Yeoh join.

By: Carlos Miguel Rosales

18 – The civil.

Applauded at the last Cannes Film Festival, this Mexican film starring Arcelia Ramírez and directed by Teodora Mihai tells the story of a mother who, faced with the kidnapping of her teenage daughter, decides to take matters into her own hands before the indifference of the authorities.

Alcohol and sports don’t mix. There are wild stories about cyclists who used to put champagne or cherry beer in their water bottle, but you will not find an exercise physiologist who promotes drinking alcoholic beverages these days. The British cyclist Bradley Wiggins, winner of the Tour de France in 2012 and the Olympic time trial, was an alcoholic like his father. During the cycling season, however, he managed to hold back. After every win, however, when the belts could come off, he drank it so much that it wasn’t pretty anymore.

The alcohol in your body increases blood pressure, heart rate and sweating. It removes extra moisture from your body, more lactic acid is formed. You can fall off your bike drunk. You don’t want any of that. It’s actually crazy that drink brands are allowed to sponsor (motor) sports and that the winners spray each other with champagne. Sin and a bad example.

There are wild stories about cyclists who used to put champagne or cherry beer in their water bottle, but you will not find an exercise physiologist who promotes drinking alcoholic beverages these days.

well deserved

Everyone knows the pleasure of a well-deserved cold beer after a summer cycling tour. Then the alcohol is a reward, disguised as a thirst quencher. Addiction experts also have to deal with this. Drinking is often a form of reward, comfort or celebration. There is nothing wrong with such behavior in itself, but if the drinker is prone to addiction, there will be something daily to reward, comfort or celebrate over time.

(A lot of) alcohol is not part of a healthy lifestyle, even if there is no danger of addiction. It contains unnecessary calories, it burdens the liver, intestines and brain. It often adversely affects mood and behavior and leads to hangovers and thus dereliction of duty. The campaigns and initiatives to reduce alcohol consumption, often linked to the tradition of New Year’s resolutions, show how problematic alcohol is for citizens and society.

cluster
Anyone who exercises systematically, eats healthily and, of course, does not smoke, will also be moderate with alcohol. The tendency to cluster habits, good or bad, is very human. You would say that a conscious lifestyle with a lot of sport and good nutrition excludes alcohol abuse. But that is not necessarily the case yet. The influence of alcohol on physical functioning is not that drastic. From a large study of the RIVM into alcohol use and absenteeism: ?Little known about alcohol use and musculoskeletal complaints?.

The well-known U or hockey stick curve also appears in that RIVM study from 2008. The extensive research into alcohol consumption has led to the consensus that moderate alcohol consumption is better for (heart) health than no drop at all. A glass a day is said to have a protective effect. The risk of heart disease and death, compared to amounts of alcohol consumed, shows a valley parabola-like graph in an xy coordinate system that first falls to an optimum with moderate use (one glass for women per day, two for men) and then increases with the increase in the number of glasses.

Norm
Since 2005, the hockey stick has been the legitimacy for moderate alcohol use. Until better research undermined the idea. When all 23 conditions associated with alcohol are charted, no beneficial effect remains, and the line of risk for something eerie slopes steadily upwards from the origin (zero glasses). Alcohol is bad at any dose, the general opinion is now. A single drink or two for fun remains OK and is in fact no cause for concern, as in this article in Medium is pre-calculated.

The official advice has now been adjusted in a number of countries and comes down to this: if you drink, then no more than one glass a day, preferably a few days a week, and if you don’t drink, don’t start. The Dutch psychiatrist René Kahn wrote the book To your health? and puts in a video why alcohol is not good at all.

Not drinking fits into the healthy habits cluster. Also in perception. It is always the disciplined fitness enthusiasts who go for the green sludge after exercise and not the frosted glass of triple. Government policy to discourage alcohol consumption could be stepped up a notch, but a new, ‘dry’ norm is already being formed. You drink on special occasions, not just every time you visit, after tea at a family visit, with dinner during the week, or after every meeting or football training.

more endearing

The clustering of good habits may be a psychological phenomenon, but not a biological one. After sifting through data on lifestyle habits from nearly 40,000 clients at the Cooper Clinic in Dallas, Texas, researchers came to a surprising outcome: ?Higher fitness is significantly related to higher alcohol consumption in a large cohort of adult patients.?

The fitness of the customers was measured annually during a check-up on the basis of a treadmill test. Drinking consumption and degree of alcohol dependence came from questionnaires. The results were consistent with previous, smaller studies, writes The New York Times, especially among young athletes and students. It also turned out that the fitter and sportier, the more engaging.

seductive
The researchers do not have a conclusive explanation for the phenomenon. There is no possible physiological, causal relationship. The most obvious is that athletes go for a drink together after the competition or training and then hit him so well that they quickly end up with quite a few glasses. Another explanation lies in the idea of ??the well-deserved reward.

A physical explanation is that alcohol and fitness excite the same areas of reward in the brain and that the combination is doubly seductive. But maybe the fit drinkers started working out because they drank a lot, as compensation. Perhaps the explanation must be sought in cultural, social and/or economic differences between the different Cooper Clinic clients, who are now being lumped together in one cohort.

The large numbers in this study say nothing meaningful about this. What is striking, according to one of the researchers in The New York Times: “Most people probably don’t associate exercise and alcohol use as behaviors that are related.”

It can get so cozy in the sports canteen that you don’t think about it.
