DBS Vickers, the brokerage arm of DBS Bank, announced yesterday (August 12) that it has received in-principal approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) under the Payment Services Act (PS Act) to provide digital payment token services as a major payment institution.

This makes them Singapore?s second crypto player to secure an in-principle approval from MAS to offer token services, after Australian crypto exchange Independent Reserve was allowed to operate as a fully regulated digital asset service provider last week.

Steady growth of digital exchange

Since the launch of DBS? digital exchange, around 400 institutional and accredited investors have been onboarded to trade on the exchange as at end-June 2021. This is up from just 120 investors the quarter before, representing a growth of more than 233 per cent growth in numbers.

The digital exchange, also recorded close to S$180 million in total trading value in the second quarter this year, more than five times the value traded in the previous quarter. The bank also revealed that it has over S$130 million in digital assets in its custodial services.

Currently, traders are able to trade four cryptocurrencies on the DBS Digital exchange: Bitcoin, Ether, Bitcoin Cash and XRP.

In the previous earnings call, DBS? CEO Piyush shared an optimistic view of the future of cryptocurrency.

I do think given the amount of interest in all the four cryptos that we trade now, that interest is quite high. And therefore, I do think it will pick up. But whether it picks up to tens of millions, or hundreds of millions of income over the next few years, it?s hard to say.

MAS continues to sift through applications

Other than DBS Vickers, a few other applicants were recently notified by MAS recently that they too will be granted the payment services licenses under the Payment Services Act.

They are among the first batch of licenses recipient to be able to operate digital payment token services in Singapore.

MAS also shared with Forkast News that they have received over 170 license applications by digital payment token service providers. Thirty applications were withdrawn after engagement with MAS, and two were rejected.

Why We Love It: Even though asparagus is a spring veggie, chances are you can still find some pretty great asparagus all summer. This soup is a gorgeous green, packed with nutrients, garlic, and optional (but not so optional) croutons. It?s only made with nine ingredients, not including the croutons, but I promise you, you don?t want to go without them.

Hero Ingredient: Asparagus always.

Why We Love It: This simple healthy Thai coconut soup (Tom Kha Kai) is a signature dish at Thai Fresh in Austin. It?s the perfect balance of fresh, spicy, and creamy, and good all year round.

Hero Ingredient: Lemongrass, it?s the perfect time to eat it.

Why We Love It: I love this soup because I don?t like corn. Super weird, but it?s been one of those foods I?ve never been crazy about. However, this soup is good. It allows even corn haters to enjoy sweet summer corn in their best season. It?s super light and fresh, and the tomatoes and radishes on top are the perfect *chef?s kiss* garnish.

Hero Ingredient: Never thought I?d say this, but CORN. Sweet and hearty, but still healthy and fresh.

Why We Love It: This is one of those summer soup recipes you will want to make on your next beach vacation. Of course, you can do it at home, too, but how fun is it to get creative with fresh seafood at the beach? If you aren?t a seafood lover, this recipe notes that you can easily use chicken or chickpeas instead. The real star is the cilantro broth and it tastes great with almost anything.

Hero Ingredient: The cilantro broth. Every great soup needs a great base.

8 of 16

Why We Love It: This might be one of the most flavorful soups on this list. When you?re craving pasta, zoodles don?t always do the trick, but in this soup they truly do. The fresh green onions and cilantro make the soup so bright that even though it?s hot, it screams summer. Try this recipe the next time you?re craving Asian food.

Hero Ingredient: Zoodles, for tricking my taste buds.

9 of 16

Why We Love It: I love that this soup is described as a ?throw-together event,? because that?s usually how all of my cooking goes. You can use whatever summery veggies you have in the fridge, any kind of pasta (or brown rice), and dinner is served. Don?t have chicken stock? Vegetable stock works, too. Super customizable, super fresh, super summery.

Hero Ingredient: The white beans for the plant-based protein (and flavor).

Why We Love It: This is the ultimate lunch on a hot summer day. I personally love watermelon, so the idea of watermelon gazpacho excited me, but it can definitely throw some people off. However, the watermelon just balances out all of the other ingredients, and the soup is still savory. It?s just that much more refreshing and summery.

Hero Ingredient: Watermelon (listen to Watermelon Sugar by Harry Styles while you cook).

Why We Love It: Gluten-free, vegan, creamy, salty, refreshing, and ready in 20 minutes. What?s not to love? This soup is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients and tastes so good chilled on a hot summer day. Hint: it tastes equally as good hot in the winter, too.

Hero Ingredient: Celery season is just getting started, so take advantage of this recipe now.

12 of 16

Why We Love It: This soup allows both basil and zucchini to shine in their prime season: the summertime. It?s served at room temperature or chilled, which allows the basil to keep its freshness and really lighten up the soup. I also love that it gets its creaminess from hemp seeds, not milk or cream.

Hero Ingredient: The zucchini and basil are really going to have to fight it out on this one. The soup wouldn?t be what it is without either.

13 of 16

Why We Love It: This gazpacho recipe is a super easy way to use up summer tomatoes. It?s arguably one of the most fresh summer soup recipes, as it?s served cold and with only fresh ingredients. I personally skip the croutons when it comes to gazpacho, because I like it to be super light, but if you?re looking for a more hearty soup, definitely add them in.

Hero Ingredient: Summer tomatoes, AKA the best kind of tomatoes.

14 of 16

Why We Love It: This soup won me over for being completely heat-free. By that, I mean you don?t use an oven, grill, or stove in the preparation. Now THAT is a summer soup. It?s full of nutrients and is the perfect refreshing lunch or appetizer for those too-hot-to-cook days.

Hero Ingredient: The cucumbers, but specifically the ones on top for the perfect crunch in every spoonful.

15 of 16

Why We Love It: Disclaimer: I know that this summer soup recipe isn?t written to be a cold soup, but I was too lazy to heat it up one day, and I?m convinced it should always be eaten cold. The ingredient list is packed with delicious summer green veggies and includes a really great homemade pesto recipe. The pasta could definitely be excluded for a lighter soup, but I love what it does to the texture.

Hero Ingredient: When pesto is included, it?s almost always my favorite ingredient.

16 of 16

Why We Love It: I think it needs to be said that I, too, thought avocado soup sounded disgusting. Upon first impression, I had all but written this recipe off as no good, until my first bite. It?s creamy, cold, and almost has a Mexican flavor to it.

Hero Ingredient: Avocados. Even though they hit their prime in spring, I can never get enough.

This soup was declared cultural patrimony by the mayor?s office in Bogotá about 20 years ago. Cultural patrimony is ?a set of goods and values that are an expression of the people.?? And this soup is quite an expression of our people. It dates back to pre-Hispanic times, where one of the first recipes for ajiáco was based on various roots and tubers accompanied by guascas?an aromatic bitter green?and venison. Although it was always thought to be of Muisca origin? the native tribe of central Colombia?according to the historian Lácidez Moreno, ajiáco has African roots. Just like humanity.

However, to current Colombians, especially Bogotánians, there is only one true ajiáco?a hearty soup made with three kinds of potatoes, corn, chicken, guasca herbs, cream, avocado, and capers.

The three potatoes in the ajiaco soup each serve a purpose. The sabanera potato, which I replace with russet potatoes, dissolves into the broth, giving it its creamy quality. The second potato is called paste, which gives flavor and texture. In this case I use large Yukon Golds as a substitute. Finally, to get the yellow color and sweet taste, there is the Criolla potato, which you can replace with tiny gold creamer potatoes or yellow new potatoes.

Guasca is an herb also known as galisonga for New Zealanders, or gallant sol- dier in Ireland?the latter naturally my favorite of its many names. In the United States, guasca can be found at farmers markets by the name of potato weed. This fragrant herb imparts a particular taste to ajiáco and can be found in dried form online or in the spice section of the few Colombian markets around the United States. However, if guasca is not an option, it should not be a deterrent from making this comforting recipe.

Invite another pair of hands into the kitchen to help you peel the potatoes. It will go quicker, and it is a good way to spark conversation while making lunch.?

In the dead of winter last year, all I could think about was how amazing summer would be. I couldn?t wait to lie on the beach again and see friends every single day. I imagined the city coming back to life and that it would feel like November 7th all summer long. But just a couple weeks ago, I looked up and summer was halfway over, and I hadn?t done any of the reveling I thought I would do.

Instead, every day seemed the same as before. I was still working from home; I walked to get coffee in the morning, avoided the subway, took walks. Now fully vaccinated, I was doing some more adventurous things, like going to a movie for the first time in a year in a half, and I went to the beach once, but where had the rest of my days gone? I hadn?t danced in the streets ?til dawn even once! And how was it already August?? I worried that I had completely failed at my triumphant return to the world, until I realized no one else around me was doing much, either. Everyone I talked to also felt that summer was speeding past, and that they hadn?t done anything worthwhile. It was so weird that we all thought we would have one shared experience, but instead ended up having a completely different one, all together.

No one anticipated having to collectively process 2020 ? what it had done to our sense of time, how it had separated us from loved ones, how we hadn?t been able to travel to places we love or haven?t ever been yet. Instead of the triumphant return we hoped it?d be, 2021 seems more like an annex for the overflow of sorrow and frustration last year brought. We are living in this new, surreal world and trying to add back pieces of our lives, pre-2020. And with the arrival of variants, there is talk of future lockdowns and questions about what fall and winter might look like. Moving forward continues to be just as bizarre, non-linear and disorienting as the past year and a half, and it?s hard to know if we should feel hopeful or cautious. Maybe both. I?m finding comfort in letting this year be what it is, instead of what I?d hoped it would be ? giving it time to unwind and then wind back up again.

Summer 2021 just wasn?t our summer, and that?s ok. We have time.

P.S. 13 readers share their joyful reunions and what unexpected relationships have you made during the pandemic?

I like my husband a lot, but he has this really annoying habit?

In the morning, when the sun is peeking through the blinds, and the dog is stretching at the foot of our bed, he engages me in conversation. ?GOOD MORNING!? he?ll say a little too loudly. How?d you sleep? Should we do something fun today? Are you going for a run now or later?

Not helping matters is the fact that our bed is ridiculously comfortable. A few years ago, we switched to the Brooklinen sheets and duvet, and any hope of my becoming the kind of woman who throws opens the drapes to greet the day seems to be getting further and further out of reach.

Brooklinen?s sheets are so soft and luxurious that every morning feels like I?m waking up in a grand hotel, on vacation from my own life. I?m a new convert to linen sheets, and I love how airy and breathable they are.

Even though I like color in the rest of the house, I tend to lean towards calming neutrals in the bedroom. Above is Brooklinen?s duvet cover in cream and the linen core sheet in caramel stripe. (I also love the chambray.) Note! If anyone else is shopping for their kid?s dorm room bed, Brooklinen sheet sets also come in Twin XL. Score!)

Score!)

The conversation necessarily begins with this subject. Engaged in June on the Lavaredo Ultra Trail, in Italy, Xavier Thévenard was forced to give up after about thirty kilometers (over 120 km) due to respiratory problems which reminded him of bad memories of his Covid-19 infection. last fall. Met on the side of Jougne (Doubs), his playground, a few days after this failure, the athlete of Team Garmin however tried to put things into perspective, to be positive and to already plan on his next meetings of the summer, including the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, which takes place at the end of August. ?There is no death of man but it is true that it is quite disturbing not to understand, to have only assumptions and no precise diagnosis, recognized the thirty-something.
Xavier Thévenard knows he must take his illness patiently. During our discussion, the athlete who describes himself as a ?physical activity bulimic? recalls having been severely affected by Covid-19 and having had to take the time to recover well before resuming a sustained training rhythm. ?I had all the symptoms with big breathing problems. It was tough. To say how difficult it was, I didn’t want to fall asleep at night and tried to control my breathing because I was afraid to stay there overnight, he recalls I spent 10 days in bed, then it calmed down. I let 3-4 days pass before resuming and then I just went for a walk. Anyway at the beginning it was useless to go for a run or to try to make the intensity because I felt well that my body was not capable of it. Just walking, I was out of breath and it was wrong. But it gradually improved and I found correct sensations in training, in fundamental endurance sessions, in mid-December, a month and a half later. ?

In addition to discussing with Xavier Thévenard this gradual and groping recovery, GQ reviewed with this lover of nature and surpassing oneself the different aspects of his preparation (recovery, nutrition, state of mind?) which make him one of the best in his discipline.

A preparation based on cross-country skiing

?As usual, as soon as there is the possibility of cross-country skiing, I go. Basically I am a cross-country skier and then I always prepared myself like that. I really enjoyed myself, I made a few thousand cross-country ski terminals in the winter space. It is above all a ground work but it is also interesting compared to the sheathing to prepare for the running. In trail running, precisely, we need a commitment in the descents and in cross-country skiing that’s exactly it. We work on coordination, balance, proprioception. It is really a very complete sport and one which brings a lot of benefits for other sports. Usually I ski between 3 and 6 hours. I can also sometimes do 2×3 hours, in the morning and in the afternoon. The good thing about cross-country skiing is that we have two styles, skating and the more ancestral style, the classic, so we can alternate the two. In terms of body language, it’s not the same thing and we work different muscles, explains Xavier Thévenard, who resumed racing towards the end of March. In April, I alternated quite a bit between cross-country skiing and running. Not too much cycling this year due to pretty rough conditions. Lots of running and there you go. In the summer, I do a little wheel-ski or kayak and that allows me to work on the sheathing without having to do specific sessions. Indoor sport is a bit against my religion no matter what time of year. There is no bad weather, there is only bad clothes (laughs).?
