The team at NTU Singapore-CEA Alliance for Research in Circular Economy (SCARCE) repurposed the e-waste plastics, subjecting them only to sterilisation, before being trialled in lab experiments.
The team found that over 95 per cent of the human stem cells seeded on plastics scavenged from discarded computer components remained healthy after a week, a result comparable to cells grown on conventional cell culture plates.
These findings, described in a study published online in the scientific journal Science of the Total Environment, indicate a potential new sustainable use for e-waste plastics, which account for about 20 per cent of the 50 million tonnes[1] of e-waste produced worldwide each year.
Repurposing them for cell culture in the lab would not only allow maximum value to be recovered from e-waste plastics, but also help to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated from biomedical research, said the NTU research team. A study in 2015 estimated that 5.5 million tonnes of lab-related plastic waste[2], including cell culture dishes, is generated globally in a year.
These new findings build on a 2020 study led by the same NTU team, which investigated the effect of e-waste plastics on six different human cell types and found healthy cell growth despite the hazardous elements to be found in e-waste plastics. These findings inspired the research team to upcycle e-waste plastic scraps and trial them in advanced cell culture applications.
Assistant Professor Dalton Tay of the NTU School of Materials Science and Engineering and School of Biological Sciences, who led this interdisciplinary study, said: ?E-waste plastics contain hazardous components which may get released into the environment if not disposed of properly. Interestingly, we found through our studies that certain e-waste plastics could successfully maintain cell growth, making them potential alternatives to the cell culture plastics used in labs today.?
?Repurposing them for immediate use rather than recycling them enables the immediate extension of the lifespan of e-waste plastics and minimises environmental pollution. Our approach is in line with the zero-waste hierarchy framework, which prioritises the reuse option through materials science and engineering innovation.?
Providing an independent point of view, Professor Seeram Ramakrishna, Board Member of the Plastics Recycling Association of Singapore and Chairman of the Plastics Recycling Centre of Excellence, said: ?With plastic a critical component in our manufacturing and logistical processes, we are in urgent need of sustainable solutions to plastic waste to mitigate its impact on the environment and social costs. Innovative solutions, such as the idea developed by Asst Prof Tay and his team to repurpose e-waste plastic, could serve to address the ubiquitous plastic waste problem in Singapore and around the world, and move us towards plastics circularity.?
The NTU scientists? research that turns waste into treasure is in line with the NTU 2025 vision and the University?s Sustainability Manifesto, which aspire to develop sustainable solutions to address some of humanity?s pressing grand challenges.
E-waste plastics encourage healthy cell growth
For this study, the NTU team used plastic scavenged from e-waste collected by a local waste recycling facility. Three kinds of e-waste plastic were chosen for their varied surface features ? the keyboard pushbuttons and diffuser sheet obtained from LCDs have a relatively flat and smooth surface, while the prism sheet, also found in LCDs, has highly aligned ridges.
To test the viability of using e-waste plastics for cell cultures, the NTU team seeded stem cells onto 1.1cm-wide circular discs of sterilised e-waste plastics.
A week later, the scientists found that more than 95 per cent of live and healthy stem cells seeded on the e-plastics remained ? a result comparable to the experimental control of stem cells grown on commercially available cell culture plates made of polystyrene.
The stem cells grown on the e-waste plastics also retained their ability to differentiate ? a process in which stem cells become specialised cells with a more specific function, such as blood cells, brain cells, heart muscle cells or bone cells.
E-waste plastic surface features affect stem cell growth
Stem cells can undergo differentiation under the right conditions in the body or a lab. One way to facilitate this process in the lab is the addition of a medium that ?nudges? the stem cells in a certain direction.
To investigate the effect of e-waste plastic on the stem cells? differentiation, the NTU team added two types of medium in equal amounts to the cells cultured on e-waste plastic and on polystyrene cell culture plates. One type coaxes the stem cells to develop into fat cells and the other nudges the stem cells to become bone cells.
At the end of two weeks, a higher proportion of stem cells cultured on e-waste plastics successfully went through differentiation compared to those on the conventional polystyrene cell culture plate.
The scientists also found that the stem cells cultured on keyboard plastic and diffuser sheet were more likely to develop into bone cells, while stem cells cultured on the prism sheet, with its ridges, were more likely to develop into fat cells.
Asst Prof Tay said: ?In tissue engineering, we use advanced techniques to engineer surfaces and study how they can influence stem cell differentiation. Now, we have shown that e-waste plastics are a ready source of such microstructures that allow us to further study how stem cell development can be directed ? the ?holy grail? of regenerative medicine and more recently, lab-grown meat. There are important biomaterials and scaffold design rules and lessons we can learn from these e-waste plastic scraps.?
Going forward, the NTU team aims to further develop resource-effective remanufacturing processes to upcycle e-waste plastics that would support other high-value biotechnological applications.
This would help to promote sustainable practices in research and innovative waste-to-resource solutions for the industry, say the scientists.

Die Omikron-Variante des Coronavirus dürfte andere Virusvarianten wie Delta nach Einschätzung eines renommierten Experten schon in Kürze europaweit verdrängt haben. ?Im Moment ist Omikron in Europa noch selten?, sagte Richard Neher, Leiter der Forschungsgruppe Evolution von Viren und Bakterien am Biozentrum der Universität Basel, in einem auf der Webseite der Universität veröffentlichten Interview. ?Aber wenn die Entwicklung so weitergeht, wird Omikron in etwa zwei bis vier Wochen in Europa vorherrschend sein.? Die Übertragungsrate sei dreimal so hoch wie bei Delta. Grund dafür sei, dass sich sowohl Geimpfte als auch Ungeimpfte infizieren. Gegen eine Ansteckung seien Geimpfte bei der Delta-Variante besser geschützt gewesen als nun bei Omikron.
Zumindest aber seien Geimpfte und vor allem Geboosterte bei Omikron nach den bisherigen Hinweisen wohl weiter vor einem schweren Verlauf der Krankheit Covid-19 geschützt. Dass es bei Omikron generell vor allem mildere Verläufe gebe, lasse sich nicht sagen, so Neher. Von den bisher erfassten Fällen seien vielfach Geimpfte oder Genesene betroffen gewesen ? also Menschen, bei denen bereits ein gewisser Immunschutz bestand. ?Dies ist wohl der Hauptgrund für die wenigen schweren Verläufe, nicht die Eigenschaften des Virus selbst.?

Das hat das NRW-Gesundheitsministerium in einem Erlass geregelt. Die ?Siegener Zeitung? hatte zuvor berichtet.
Auch Menschen, bei denen die Grundimmunisierung weniger als fünf Monate zurückliege, dürften nicht abgewiesen werden, heißt es in dem Erlass ? sofern ein Mindestabstand von vier Wochen erreicht ist. Das verkürzte Impfintervall orientiere sich an der aktuellen Empfehlung der Ständigen Impfkomission, wonach eine Auffrischungsimpfung bei Personen mit schwer eingeschränktem Immunsystem und einer erwartbar stark verminderten Immunantwort bereits vier Wochen nach der zweiten Impfstoffdosis als Optimierung verabreicht werden könne.
Eine Auffrischungsimpfung vor Ablauf der fünf Monate sei aber grundsätzlich möglich, stellte eine Sprecherin des Gesundheitsminsiteriums auf Nachfrage klar. Es handele sich jedoch bei dem vierwöchigen Mindestabstand ausdrücklich nicht um eine Empfehlung, sondern lediglich um eine Untergrenze.

Bei einem Tanzfestival in Münster hat es trotz 2G-plus-Regelung einen Coranavirus-Ausbruch gegeben. Das Amt für Kommunikation der Stadt sprach dabei am Montag auch von drei bereits bestätigten Fällen der neuen Omikron-Variante. Allerdings blieb zunächst unklar, ob diese Fälle tatsächlich durch Genomsequenzierung bestätigt wurden.
Obwohl nur Geimpfte und Genesene an der Veranstaltung teilnehmen durften, die zusätzlich einen gültigen negativen Test vorweisen konnten, sei nach einer dreitägigen Tanzveranstaltung Anfang Dezember bei mindestens 14 Teilnehmenden eine Corona-Infektion festgestellt worden.
Weshalb es zur Ansteckungsserie kam und wie viele Personen darüber hinaus betroffen seien, werde nun ermittelt. Nur wenige der insgesamt bis zu 134 auch internationalen Teilnehmer kommen dabei aus Münster. Alle seien zu einem PCR-Test aufgefordert worden. Unter den 14 bislang bekannten Infizierten wohnen zwei in Münster.
18.22 Uhr ? Bewährungsstrafen nach Demo gegen Corona-Regeln in Schweinfurt
Einen Tag nach einer nicht angemeldeten Demonstration gegen Corona-Maßnahmen in Schweinfurt sind zwei Männer in beschleunigten Verfahren zu mehrmonatigen Haftstrafen auf Bewährung verurteilt worden. Zwei weitere Männer wurden in Untersuchungshaft genommen, unter anderem wegen versuchter Brandstiftung an einem zivilen Polizeiwagen, wie die Staatsanwaltschaft Schweinfurt am Montagabend mitteilte.
Ein 27-Jähriger hatte am Sonntagabend bei der Versammlung einem Polizisten einen Faustschlag ins Gesicht versetzt; der Beamte musste ärztlich versorgt werden. Ein Richter am Amtsgericht Schweinfurt verurteilte den Mann am Montagvormittag zu acht Monaten Freiheitsstrafe, die unter der Auflage einer Zahlung von 3500 Euro an eine gemeinnützige Einrichtung zur Bewährung ausgesetzt wurde.
Ein 29 Jahre alter Mann bekam sechs Monate, die ebenfalls gegen eine Geldauflage auf Bewährung ausgesetzt wurde. Er hatte den Angaben zufolge mehrfach versucht, mit dem Fuß gegen die Köpfe der Einsatzkräfte zu treten, als diese seine Personalien feststellen wollten. Zwei weitere 30- und 34-jährige Tatverdächtige sollen am Rande der Demonstration versucht haben, mit Brandbeschleunigern ein Zivilfahrzeug der Polizei anzuzünden. Gegen beide erging Haftbefehl unter anderem wegen versuchter Brandstiftung und Landfriedensbruchs.
18.02 Uhr ? Ärztekammer: Ablehnung von Corona-Impfung kann Behandlungsfehler sein
Die Ablehnung einer Corona-Schutzimpfung durch einen Arzt kann nach Darstellung der Landesärztekammer Sachsen als grober Behandlungsfehler gelten und haftungsrechtliche Konsequenzen haben. Aktuell würden sich Hinweise mehren, dass Ärztinnen und Ärzte Impfungen ablehnen ? aus Gründen, die sich ?letztlich als Nicht- oder Halbwissen darstellen oder sogar Verschwörungstheorien zuzuordnen sind?, teilte die Ärztekammer in Dresden mit.
?Die wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen zur Impfung gegen Covid-19 beweisen eine eindeutige positive Risiko-Nutzen-Bewertung, auf der die öffentlichen Impfempfehlungen der Ständigen Impfkommission in Berlin und der Sächsischen Impfkommission beruhen. Jeder nicht impfende Arzt muss sich bewusst sein, dass er der fachgerechten Behandlung seiner Patienten und in jedem Fall einer individuellen Aufklärung verpflichtet ist?, hieß es.

Zypern beginnt mit der Impfung von Kindern im Alter von fünf bis elf Jahren. Wie die Regierung mitteilte, will sie damit nach den ersten beiden bestätigten Fällen der Omikron-Variante in dem Inselstaat eine weitere Corona-Welle verhindern. Gesundheitsminister Michalis Hadjipantela erklärte außerdem, dass Personen zwei Wochen früher als zu der bisher vorgeschriebenen sechsmonatigen Wartezeit ihre Auffrischungsimpfungen erhalten können.
Auch die Beschränkungen für Infizierte oder Personen, die als enge Kontaktpersonen gelten, wurden verschärft. Alle Personen, bei denen die Omikron-Variante oder eine andere neue Mutation diagnostiziert wurde, müssen sich an ihrem üblichen Aufenthaltsort zwangsweise isolieren, wie der Gesundheitsminister sagte. Enge Kontaktpersonen müssten sich innerhalb von 72 Stunden einem Antigen-Schnelltest und eine Woche später einem PCR-Test unterziehen. Personen, die eine Auffrischungsimpfung erhalten hätten, seien davon ausgenommen.
Der SafePass des Landes ? oder der Nachweis der Impfung ? wird ab Mittwoch allen Personen entzogen, die nicht innerhalb von sieben Monaten nach Abschluss der Impfung eine Auffrischungsimpfung erhalten haben. Die Variante des Coronavirus werde schon in kurzer Zeit in dem skandinavischen Land dominieren, schrieb das nationale Gesundheitsinstitut FHI in einer Risikobewertung. Bereits im Dezember werde Omikron eine Welle mit vielen Erkrankten und Krankenhauseinlieferungen sowie einer bedeutenden Belastung von Gesundheitswesen und Gesellschaft verursachen.

Die bundesweite Sieben-Tage-Inzidenz ist im Vergleich zum Vortag erneut gesunken. Das Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) gab den Wert der Neuinfektionen pro 100.000 Einwohner und Woche am Montagmorgen mit 389,2 an.
Zum Vergleich: Am Vortag hatte der Wert bei 390,9 gelegen. Vor einer Woche lag die bundesweite Inzidenz bei 441,9 (Vormonat: 277,4). Die Gesundheitsämter in Deutschland meldeten dem RKI innerhalb eines Tages 21.743 Corona-Neuinfektionen. Das geht aus Zahlen hervor, die den Stand des RKI-Dashboards von 5 Uhr wiedergeben. Vor genau einer Woche waren es 27.836 Ansteckungen.
Bei der Bewertung des Infektionsgeschehens ist zu bedenken, dass Experten derzeit von einer merklichen Untererfassung ausgehen. Gesundheitsämter und Kliniken kommen demnach mit der Meldung von Fällen zumindest in einzelnen Regionen nicht mehr hinterher. Die Zahl der in Kliniken aufgenommenen Corona-Patienten je 100.000 Einwohner innerhalb von sieben Tagen gab das RKI am Freitag mit 5,71 (Donnerstag 5,75) an. Die Zahl der Genesenen gab das RKI am Montag mit 5.435.700 an. Die Zahl der Menschen, die an oder unter Beteiligung einer nachgewiesenen Infektion mit Sars-CoV-2 gestorben sind, stieg auf 105.754.

Gegen den mutmaßlichen Versammlungsleiter wurde ein Ordnungswidrigkeitsverfahren eingeleitet.

Im Kreis Gotha lag der Sieben-Tage-Wert am Sonntag bei 1379,3 Neuinfektionen je 100 000 Einwohner. Am Samstag waren dort verschärfte Pandemie-Regelungen in Kraft getreten. So dürfen nur Getestete und Genesene mit einem zusätzlichen aktuellen Negativtest in Gaststätten und für touristische Übernachtungen einkehren. Diese Vorschrift gilt auch für öffentliche Veranstaltungen in geschlossenen Räumen, für Kulturveranstaltungen, in Kinos und bei körpernahen Dienstleistungen wie Kosmetik. Die Testpflicht entfällt für Menschen, die bereits eine Auffrischungsimpfung erhalten haben.

Das verkürzte Impfintervall orientiere sich an der aktuellen Empfehlung der Ständigen Impfkomission, wonach eine Auffrischungsimpfung bei Personen mit schwer eingeschränktem Immunsystem und einer erwartbar stark verminderten Immunantwort bereits vier Wochen nach der zweiten Impfstoffdosis als Optimierung verabreicht werden könne.
Eine Auffrischungsimpfung vor Ablauf der fünf Monate sei aber grundsätzlich möglich, stellte eine Sprecherin des Gesundheitsminsiteriums auf Nachfrage klar. Es handele sich jedoch bei dem vierwöchigen Mindestabstand ausdrücklich nicht um eine Empfehlung, sondern lediglich um eine Untergrenze.

Bei einem Tanzfestival in Münster hat es trotz 2G-plus-Regelung einen Coranavirus-Ausbruch gegeben. Das Amt für Kommunikation der Stadt sprach dabei am Montag auch von drei bereits bestätigten Fällen der neuen Omikron-Variante. Allerdings blieb zunächst unklar, ob diese Fälle tatsächlich durch Genomsequenzierung bestätigt wurden.

Einen Tag nach einer nicht angemeldeten Demonstration gegen Corona-Maßnahmen in Schweinfurt sind zwei Männer in beschleunigten Verfahren zu mehrmonatigen Haftstrafen auf Bewährung verurteilt worden. Zwei weitere Männer wurden in Untersuchungshaft genommen, unter anderem wegen versuchter Brandstiftung an einem zivilen Polizeiwagen, wie die Staatsanwaltschaft Schweinfurt am Montagabend mitteilte.
Ein 27-Jähriger hatte am Sonntagabend bei der Versammlung einem Polizisten einen Faustschlag ins Gesicht versetzt; der Beamte musste ärztlich versorgt werden. Ein Richter am Amtsgericht Schweinfurt verurteilte den Mann am Montagvormittag zu acht Monaten Freiheitsstrafe, die unter der Auflage einer Zahlung von 3500 Euro an eine gemeinnützige Einrichtung zur Bewährung ausgesetzt wurde.
Ein 29 Jahre alter Mann bekam sechs Monate, die ebenfalls gegen eine Geldauflage auf Bewährung ausgesetzt wurde. Er hatte den Angaben zufolge mehrfach versucht, mit dem Fuß gegen die Köpfe der Einsatzkräfte zu treten, als diese seine Personalien feststellen wollten. Zwei weitere 30- und 34-jährige Tatverdächtige sollen am Rande der Demonstration versucht haben, mit Brandbeschleunigern ein Zivilfahrzeug der Polizei anzuzünden. Gegen beide erging Haftbefehl unter anderem wegen versuchter Brandstiftung und Landfriedensbruchs.

Die Ablehnung einer Corona-Schutzimpfung durch einen Arzt kann nach Darstellung der Landesärztekammer Sachsen als grober Behandlungsfehler gelten und haftungsrechtliche Konsequenzen haben. Aktuell würden sich Hinweise mehren, dass Ärztinnen und Ärzte Impfungen ablehnen ? aus Gründen, die sich ?letztlich als Nicht- oder Halbwissen darstellen oder sogar Verschwörungstheorien zuzuordnen sind?, teilte die Ärztekammer in Dresden mit.
?Die wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen zur Impfung gegen Covid-19 beweisen eine eindeutige positive Risiko-Nutzen-Bewertung, auf der die öffentlichen Impfempfehlungen der Ständigen Impfkommission in Berlin und der Sächsischen Impfkommission beruhen. Zypern beginnt mit der Impfung von Kindern im Alter von fünf bis elf Jahren. Wie die Regierung mitteilte, will sie damit nach den ersten beiden bestätigten Fällen der Omikron-Variante in dem Inselstaat eine weitere Corona-Welle verhindern. Gesundheitsminister Michalis Hadjipantela erklärte außerdem, dass Personen zwei Wochen früher als zu der bisher vorgeschriebenen sechsmonatigen Wartezeit ihre Auffrischungsimpfungen erhalten können.
Auch die Beschränkungen für Infizierte oder Personen, die als enge Kontaktpersonen gelten, wurden verschärft. Alle Personen, bei denen die Omikron-Variante oder eine andere neue Mutation diagnostiziert wurde, müssen sich an ihrem üblichen Aufenthaltsort zwangsweise isolieren, wie der Gesundheitsminister sagte. Enge Kontaktpersonen müssten sich innerhalb von 72 Stunden einem Antigen-Schnelltest und eine Woche später einem PCR-Test unterziehen. Personen, die eine Auffrischungsimpfung erhalten hätten, seien davon ausgenommen.
Der SafePass des Landes ? oder der Nachweis der Impfung ? wird ab Mittwoch allen Personen entzogen, die nicht innerhalb von sieben Monaten nach Abschluss der Impfung eine Auffrischungsimpfung erhalten haben. Weiterhin dürfen ungeimpfte Personen ab dieser Woche nicht mehr an Taufen, Hochzeiten und Hotelempfängen teilnehmen. Sie sind bereits von dem Besuch von Sportstadien, Kinos, Theatern und Nachtclubs ausgeschlossen.

Experten gehen allerdings davon aus, dass die als besonders ansteckend geltende Omikron-Variante im kommenden Jahr große Probleme bereiten könnte.

Die bundesweite Sieben-Tage-Inzidenz ist im Vergleich zum Vortag erneut gesunken. Das Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) gab den Wert der Neuinfektionen pro 100.000 Einwohner und Woche am Montagmorgen mit 389,2 an.
Zum Vergleich: Am Vortag hatte der Wert bei 390,9 gelegen. Vor einer Woche lag die bundesweite Inzidenz bei 441,9 (Vormonat: 277,4). Die Gesundheitsämter in Deutschland meldeten dem RKI innerhalb eines Tages 21.743 Corona-Neuinfektionen. Das geht aus Zahlen hervor, die den Stand des RKI-Dashboards von 5 Uhr wiedergeben. Vor genau einer Woche waren es 27.836 Ansteckungen.
Bei der Bewertung des Infektionsgeschehens ist zu bedenken, dass Experten derzeit von einer merklichen Untererfassung ausgehen. Gesundheitsämter und Kliniken kommen demnach mit der Meldung von Fällen zumindest in einzelnen Regionen nicht mehr hinterher. Die Zahl der in Kliniken aufgenommenen Corona-Patienten je 100.000 Einwohner innerhalb von sieben Tagen gab das RKI am Freitag mit 5,71 (Donnerstag 5,75) an. Die Zahl der Genesenen gab das RKI am Montag mit 5.435.700 an. Die Zahl der Menschen, die an oder unter Beteiligung einer nachgewiesenen Infektion mit Sars-CoV-2 gestorben sind, stieg auf 105.754.

Deutschlandweit wurden den neuen Angaben zufolge binnen 24 Stunden 116 Todesfälle verzeichnet. Vor einer Woche waren es 81 Todesfälle. Das RKI zählte seit Beginn der Pandemie 6.531.606 nachgewiesene Infektionen mit Sars-CoV-2. Die tatsächliche Gesamtzahl dürfte deutlich höher liegen, da viele Infektionen nicht erkannt werden.

Im Kreis Gotha lag der Sieben-Tage-Wert am Sonntag bei 1379,3 Neuinfektionen je 100 000 Einwohner. Am Samstag waren dort verschärfte Pandemie-Regelungen in Kraft getreten. So dürfen nur Getestete und Genesene mit einem zusätzlichen aktuellen Negativtest in Gaststätten und für touristische Übernachtungen einkehren. Diese Vorschrift gilt auch für öffentliche Veranstaltungen in geschlossenen Räumen, für Kulturveranstaltungen, in Kinos und bei körpernahen Dienstleistungen wie Kosmetik. Die Testpflicht entfällt für Menschen, die bereits eine Auffrischungsimpfung erhalten haben.

Der Linken-Abgeordnete Jan Korte bezeichnete dies als ?unfassbar fahrlässig?. Die Bundesregierung sei offenbar ?zu unfähig und zu geizig?, um die Stiko-Geschäftsstelle ?ordentlich auszustatten?. Allein schon wegen der anstehenden Zulassungen von neuen Impfstoffen gegen die Corona-Variante Omikron gebe es weiterhin reichlich Arbeit für die Kommission.

At 3:22 p.m., referee Michael Bacher whistled off the north duel between HSV and Hansa Rostock on Sunday. It was the starting signal for exuberant cheers on the field. Goalkeeper Marko Johansson embraced the two defenders Mario Vuskovic and Jan Gyamerah, coach Tim Walter thanked the entire coaching team profusely with a handshake.
With the win, HSV is at the forefront for the first time since the first match day – even if only in third place. Naturally, Walter tried to curb the emerging euphoria: “We deliberately talk about development, because in the end it is billed.” Moving up to third place was “not at all” important, said the 46-year-old.

Striker Glatzel back on the road to success

Cocaine is among the world?s most commonly used illicit drugs. In 2016, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimated approximately 2 million people age 12 and older in the United States were current users ? a bit less than 1 percent of the total U.S. population. Fatal cocaine overdoses (in combination with an opioid) are rising, from 3,822 in 1999 to 15,883 in 2019.
Oxycodone is an opioid, a class of highly addictive drugs that also includes heroin, morphine and fentanyl. Opioid abuse is a major, ongoing public health crisis. In 2019, almost 71,000 drug overdose deaths occurred in the U.S. ? more than 70 percent involving an opioid, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Finding new ways to treat and reduce addiction requires well-validated, long-term models of how cocaine and oxycodone impact and impair biological systems and functions. Researchers used a heterogeneous rat model that reflects the genetic diversity of humans and have been characterized as vulnerable or resistant to cocaine and oxycodone behaviors.
Biological samples were collected before exposure to drugs, during intoxication, during acute withdrawal and after protracted abstinence. These samples were compared against age-matched control animals never exposed to the drugs.
Samples from more than 1,000 animals were taken, including tissue from brains, kidneys, livers, spleen, ovary, testes and adrenal glands, and preserved in methods that will allow researchers to conduct a variety of future assessments, including epigenomics, neuroanatomy, microbiomics and biomarker discovery.

In a way, you became an overnight star with this Gossip Girl opportunity. How have you been dealing with fame so far? What was the biggest change that fame has brought to your life? I would say it’s really fun to go places and get recognized by some people. Everyone is really nice, but there’s still nothing I can’t do. (laughter)
What was this character’s biggest challenge? Certainly the hardest part was giving life to a character who wasn’t kind. It’s part of real life, sometimes we’re not so nice, I don’t love that trait, but I know it’s important to the character. What I like most about playing her is her dramatic side which is quite fun.
What are the biggest similarities between you and the character? I think Julie and I share the same desire to connect with our families. I have two sisters that I love with passion and I manage to make this relationship with the character. But almost everything else is very different. She is a very interesting and different person.
In this new version of the series, did you feel more pressure than in your previous work? Did you fear the comparison with the original series? I didn’t feel that pressure because I always try to handle the work with great responsibility, give my best and work as a team to achieve an incredible result. The fans of the original version are really nice and didn’t make me feel any fear. I think the comparison is natural and people are enjoying both versions.
Your character in ‘Gossip Girl’ is a girl who loves fashion. How was your relationship with this area before the role? Did you bring something from your personal locker or take something from hers? When I was talking to the costume designer for ‘Gossip Girl’, he mentioned that he would have looked a little bit at our personal styles for inspiration in the roles. So yeah, there’s a little bit of me in her, but the character definitely has her own style.
I love fashion, I think it’s super fun and a great way to express yourself. Unfortunately because of the continuation of the series we need to keep the costumes intact, but it has amazing pieces and I love them all. My favorite piece that comes to mind first is the red dress from the first episode when she leaves the show. It was a very interesting material, an amazing modeling and I love this piece.
Unlike your character, do you remember recent times when women supported other women? Honestly, it’s pretty constant. I feel incredible support from all the women on the show, they are very wonderful people and very smart people. I end up being guided to be the class leader because I’m the oldest, but I learn a lot from them. I made a pact with myself to surround myself with people who support me and who I will support. This is very important for creating positive connections around me.
How do music and acting coexist in you? Yes, these two worlds meet in my life. While I was filming ‘Gossip Girl’ I wrote some songs that made sense to the moment. It’s interesting because acting gives me a freedom to do my art however I want. Basically I’m making music right now as a personal project and it’s going to be whatever I want, whoever I want to collaborate with and whenever I want to release it.
THE fandom Brazilian ‘Gossip Girl’ is huge and we tend to be really passionate about the things we like. How has this contact been on social media? How have they responded to the series so far? I love my Brazilian fans, I love their passion and I can relate to that feeling because when I like something I really like it. It’s wonderful and really cool to see that they’ve created a community around the show.
The two main protagonists of ‘Gossip Girl’ are black girls – which is something very different from the original series. In your opinion, how important is this? And, in your experience, do you think Hollywood has really embraced this shift in diversity? There are people who are putting a lot of effort into opening doors. I think it’s important to break down barriers that once existed and excluded people. It’s an attempt to reverse the damage that’s already been done, which is good. Let’s get these things — that are overwhelming, hateful and not acting — out of the way and make art.

The research is the latest result from a joint project between Chalmers and Volvo Group that investigates how electric vehicles can be used for distribution tasks, and the new algorithm for learning and planning the optimal path of electric vehicles is so efficient that it is already being used by Volvo Group.
Shortest distance not always the least energy
In the study, the researchers investigated how a fleet of electric trucks can deliver goods in a complex and crowded traffic network. The challenge is how delivery vehicles carrying household goods, such as groceries or furniture to several different addresses, should best plan their routes. By working out the optimal order to deliver to customers, the vehicles can be driven for as long as possible without needing to interrupt the work to recharge unnecessarily. Route planning for electric vehicles has normally tended to assume that the lowest mileage is also the most efficient, and therefore focused on finding the shortest route as the priority. Balázs Kulcsár and his colleagues focused instead on overall battery usage as the key goal, and looked for routes with the lowest possible energy consumption.
?In real traffic situations a longer distance journey may require less energy than a shorter one, once all the other parameters that affect energy consumption have been accounted for,? Balázs Kulcsár explains.
A significant reduction in energy consumption
The researchers modeled the energy consumption of distribution trucks moving in a city by looking into many factors; speed, load, traffic information, how hilly different routes were, and opportunity charging points.
The energy consumption model was then entered into a mathematical formula, resulting in an algorithm for calculating a route that allows the vehicles to make the deliveries using as little energy as possible. And, if charging is needed out on the road, the vehicle can save time by taking the most energy efficient route to a fast charging point. By accounting for extra factors such as these, the researchers? new method allowed the vehicles to reduce their energy consumption by between 5 and 20 per cent.
Because the electric delivery vehicles operate in complex real-world situations, there can often be unforeseen complications that are difficult to account for even if the algorithm is accurate from the beginning. The energy usage forecasts will therefore be further optimised through machine learning, with data collected from the vehicles being sent back to the tool for further input and analysis.
?Taken together, this will allow us to adapt route-planning to uncertain and changing conditions, minimising energy consumption and ensuring successful urban distribution,? Balázs Kulcsár says.
