Data on military spending Stockholm International Institute for Peace Studies (Sipri), also report that the world’s nuclear arsenals are increasing as states modernize, greatly raising the danger of unimaginable casualties from the most devastating killing machine.

At the same time, the world’s political leaders continue to subsidize fossil fuels by spending six trillion dollars in a single year, fully aware that such fuels claim the lives of millions of human beings, while spending a tiny fraction of those huge amounts to public health systems.

In fact, on December 27, the International Epidemic Preparedness Day.

According to the United Nations (UN), “health crises threaten to overwhelm already overburdened health systems, disrupt global supply chains and disproportionately devastate the livelihoods of many people, including women and children, and of the economies of the poorest and most vulnerable countries.

More epidemics on the horizon

If international attention is not paid, future epidemics could surpass previous outbreaks in terms of intensity and severity.

The UN added that “we need to recognize the primary role and responsibility of governments, and the indispensable contribution of some actors to address health challenges, especially women, who make up the majority of the world’s health workforce.”

The worst part is taken by the poorest

For his part, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), stated that ?although we have all suffered the impact of the pandemic, the poorest and most marginalized have been the most affected, both in terms of lives like lost livelihoods.?

Tedros stressed that increased production and equitable distribution remain the main obstacle to ending the acute phase of the pandemic. “It is a farce that in some countries health personnel and risk groups are still not fully vaccinated.”

As countries move from COVID-19, it will be vital to avoid cuts in public spending on health and other social sectors. According to the director-general of the WHO, such cuts are likely to increase the difficulties of already disadvantaged sectors.

?Instead, governments should aim to spend an additional 1% of GDP on primary health care, while working to address the shortage of the 18 million health workers needed to achieve universal health coverage for 2030?, he limited.

Calling the billionaires

“A perfect storm of conflict, climate shocks, fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising costs to reach people in need is causing a seismic hunger crisis,” the World Food Program (WFP) announced. PMA), recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The WFP also launched a unique appeal to the world’s billionaires: 6.6 billion dollars to prevent hunger for 42 million people in 43 countries.

Under Scrutiny

Of the $6.6 billion needed, $3.5 billion is to buy food and deliver it, including the cost of shipping and transporting it into the country, plus storage and “last mile” delivery using air, ground and river transportation, drivers of hired trucks, and security escorts for conflict zones – fed by the warlords – in order to distribute food among the most needy.

Another $2 billion is needed to provide cash and food vouchers (including transaction fees) where markets can function. This type of aid allows those most in need to buy the food of their choice and support local economies.

An additional $700 million will be earmarked for country-specific costs to design, scale-up and manage the implementation of efficient and effective programs of millions more tons of food and cash and voucher transfers, tailored to country conditions and operational risks in 43 countries.

The case of Yemen

For its part, the Humanitarian Action for Children of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) launched a call to support the agency’s work in Yemen, devastated by war, and where it provides children affected by conflict and disasters ?access to water, sanitation, nutrition, education, health and safety services?.

Specifically, UNICEF needs 484.4 million dollars to serve eight million girls and boys, of the 11.3 million who need assistance.

Additionally, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has requested $170 million in 2021 to address the growing needs of displaced, conflict-affected and migrant communities in Yemen.

But so far, only half of those funds have been received. The $3.85 billion Humanitarian Response Plan for Yemen also received only 50% of its budget.

The serious situation in that Middle Eastern country coincides with the WFP’s warning that after seven years of conflict, it shows no signs of ending, nor does the increase in hunger.

“As fighting continues to leave tens of thousands of people displaced and millions of people’s access to food of nutritional value cut off, more than half of the population – 16.2 million people – face acute hunger, of which 5.1 million are at risk of famine. In addition, half of children under 5 years of age ? 2.3 million ? are at risk of malnutrition this year?, he warned.

Infectious diseases

The covid-19 continues to demonstrate the speed with which “an infectious disease can devastate the world” and bring health systems to the brink of collapse, disrupting the daily lives of all humanity, the UN Secretary General declared on Monday 10 , António Guterres, on the occasion of the International Day of Epidemic Preparedness.

“It also highlighted our inability to learn from the lessons of recent health emergencies such as SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome), avian flu, Zika, Ebola and others,” he added.

“And it has reminded us that the world remains woefully ill-prepared to prevent localized outbreaks from crossing borders and becoming a global pandemic,” Guterres said.

stop infectious diseases

Noting that infectious diseases remain “a clear and present danger to all countries,” the UN secretary-general argued that covid-19 will not be the last pandemic humanity will see.

As the world responds to this health crisis, Guterres outlined the need to prepare for the next one.

That means increasing funds for better monitoring, early detection and rapid response plans in all countries, and especially in the most vulnerable, he said.

He added: ?It means reinforcing primary health care at the local level to avoid collapse? ensuring equitable access to life-saving interventions such as vaccines for all people and? achieving universal health coverage.?

like wildfire

When cases of the new omicron variant spread like wildfire, 70% of covid vaccines were distributed among the 10 largest economies in the world, while the poorest countries received only 0.8%, according to the UN, which he describes “not only as unfair, but also as a threat to the planet.”

To end this cycle, the world forum stressed that at least 70% of the population of each country must be inoculated, which the UN intends to achieve through its vaccination strategy by mid-2022.

Deaf ears? again

The UN strategy will require at least 11 billion doses of vaccine, which is feasible as long as sufficient resources are allocated for its distribution.

In short, the three aforementioned funding calls represent a tiny fraction of the gargantuan $2 trillion earmarked for the killing machines.

Despite this, calls to save lives once again fall on deaf ears.

To understand what causes inflation, let’s take a few examples. What happens to the price of potatoes when demand increases? The answer is that the price goes up. What happens to the price of oil when there is excess production (supply) in the market? The price falls. In other words, economics tells us that the price of goods and services is determined by supply and demand. When there is an increase in demand (supply), the price rises (falls). Well, money is a good like any other and, therefore, its price is also determined by its supply and demand.

[ Inflación de Costa Rica terminó el 2021 en 3,30% ]

The price of money is defined by its purchasing power and the latter is measured by a price index. The consumer price index (CPI) is generally used as the best indicator of the price of money. Therefore, when the IPC rises, it is because the price of money falls.

We live in a world where the money supply is determined exclusively by the central bank, because it has a monopoly on issuance. That is, the direct board of central banks determines, at their discretion, the amount of money they issue. For this reason, the central banks (governments) are solely responsible for the inflation, or deflation, of a country because they have the ability to adjust the money supply to the amount they want. Nothing prevents them from having the inflation rate zero.

Milton Friedman, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1976, said that “inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon.” Inflation is the fall in the price of money as a result of an abusive issue of money. When there is an excess of money supply (inorganic emission) we will have inflation.

When it is stated that ?inflation is always and everywhere a monetary phenomenon?, this means that inflation is not created by health restrictions, nor by the container crisis, nor by the fiscal deficit, nor by the cost push, nor by the bad weather, nor inflationary expectations, nor speculation, nor the international price of raw materials.

At the beginning of 2020, as a consequence of the sanitary restrictions that caused a contraction in production, the US government decided to ?stimulate? the economy with a policy of increasing the money supply. This was done by lowering the reference rate of the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) to practically zero. In addition, the Fed launched a massive bond purchase program that, until October of this year, was $120 billion per month. The result has been the highest growth in US history of the monetary aggregate M1, as we can see in the chart.

It should be clear that it was the excess monetary issue that brought about the rise in inflation in the US It is absurd to believe that printing paper stimulates economic growth.

At least the Fed acknowledges that the cause of inflation has been excess money supply. This is deduced from the measures announced on December 15 where they agreed to reduce the purchase of bonds to $60,000 million and end it in March 2022; three months ahead of schedule. In addition, the announcement that there will be three increases in the Fed’s benchmark interest rate in 2022 is another indicator of the recognition that inflation is a monetary phenomenon.

What is unfortunate is that the Fed, before starting its aggressive policy of monetary expansion, did not take into account that the only consequence would be inflation.

Buenos Aires, Jan 14 (EFE) .- The Argentine president, Alberto Fernández, led this Friday the presentation of distinctions to the Researcher of the Argentine Nation 2021, the highest award given to the most outstanding person in the national scientific system. “The rich societies today are those that have knowledge and that have been capable of developing intelligence, science and technology,” Fernández said at the ceremony, held at the Casa Rosada, the seat of the Executive in Buenos Aires. The winner of the highest scientific recognition was Dr. Daniel Raúl Bes for his extensive career in nuclear physics, developed in research centers, universities in Argentina and abroad, who was awarded a gold medal and 2,500,000 pesos ( $24,082). According to a statement from the Presidency, this award recognizes those who have contributed throughout their scientific career to producing new knowledge, developing innovations with a social and productive impact, and promoting the transfer of knowledge and the training of human resources. In addition, the Houssay awards -in honor of the first Nobel laureate in Latin America- were awarded to several researchers under 45 years of age who have carried out most of their scientific activity in the country, who received a medal, a diploma and 300,000 pesos ( $2,889) each. Among the winners, Dr. Valeria Arza stood out, who researched innovation in the industrial and agricultural sectors, public-private knowledge networks and sustainable development, and seeks to link her work with public policy. Lastly, the Jorge Sábato award -in honor of the famous Argentine scientist- was presented to Dr. Silvia Nair Goyanes, who specializes in the physical chemistry of materials. Her work ranges from basic physics to the development of new materials for different industries. . She is part of the 2% of most cited researchers in the world during 2019 and is the creator of the ?Atom Protect? chinstraps, with more than 9 million sales. The merit was given to people without distinction of age who have an outstanding record in technological transfers and developments with economic and productive impact in strategic sectors of the country, as well as a reward of 500,000 pesos, a decoration and a diploma.
Cult filmmaker, the Thai Apichatpong Weerasethakul (2010 gold palm for Uncle Boonmee, the one who remembers his past lives) moves away from his country (in the grip of censorship) for Bogota and immerses the Scottish actress Tilda Swinton in the enigmatic role of a woman who goes in search of a sound heard in a dream. Deep in the Colombian jungle, Jessica gets lost, meets a fisherman and rediscovers inner harmony in a film in the form of a waking sound dream that teaches us again to vibrate in the face of the beauty of the world and to decipher dreams like break-ins in the real. A dazzling and pure cinema experience. ?J.G.

Lingui

He describes his film as ?a journey towards the light?. Chadian filmmaker based in Paris, to whom we owe several masterpieces of African cinema (Daratt, a dry season in 2006, A screaming man in 2010), Mahamat-Saleh Haroun stages an everyday heroine through the portrait of Amina (the revelation Achouackh Abakar Souleymane), a craftswoman from the suburbs of N’Djamena whose destiny changes when her daughter faces a pregnancy unwanted. Never demonstrative (the street and renaissance scenes are deeply cinematographic), the film describes the ordeals of the two women in an emancipatory fight where the ?sacred bond? would be the sorority set up as a liberating principle. ?To write this story, I was inspired by the stories I hear in my mother’s backyard, stories of women, workers, ostracized from society and who manage to overcome tragedy and overcome taboos thanks to tenderness. It is this feeling that makes community.? A great film on the emancipatory and political role of cinema, here or elsewhere. ?J.G.

Farewell Mr. Haffmann

In 2018, the room Farewell Mr. Haffmann by Jean-Pierre Daguerre wins 4 Molières. No wonder the cinema monopolizes it and in particular Fred Cavayé who adapts it with Daniel Auteuil and Gilles Lellouche. The first plays Joseph Haffmann, a Jewish jeweler forced, in occupied Paris in 1942, to move his family away and hide in the cellar of his shop to escape the raids. The second interprets his employee, François Mercier, to whom Haffmann has entrusted the keys to his jewelry, who will slowly slide towards collaboration and who, out of frustration or jealousy, will start by hiding his boss to then kidnap him and exercise an odious blackmail.

?What I liked, says Daniel Auteuil, this is the thriller side of the story. My character wanted to save his wife and children and then finds himself unable to protect them. How I built it? Like a pressure cooker, like someone boiling. I boiled! It was intense acting fun. We don’t have the opportunity to end up with such great roles so often.? The backbone of the film is based on the hierarchy which is reversed between the two men and on the increasingly tense evolution of their relationship. For this to work, the two actors had to be in tune. ?Gilles Lellouche is the actor who has one of the most extensive palettes of his generation. We wanted to meet. We played together like two musicians playing the same score, without premeditating anything. I don’t prepare much. If I start preparing and all of a sudden the director comes up with another idea, I’m screwed! So I let myself be surprised.?ER

scream 5

Eleven years after the fourth installment, Ghostface is back. But for fans, there are plenty of reasons to worry. If the franchise more or less holds the road over the episodes, thanks to its meta universe which allows more madness, this Scream (5), which advances masked (no pun intended), is particular.

First, this is the first episode without Wes Craven behind the camera. The master of horror having died in 2015, it is now a duo, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who have the difficult task of reviving the franchise. Secondly, Kevin Williamson and Ehren Kruger do not sign the scenario, they who knew the characters and the universe inside out. This time, make way for James Vanderbilt (screenwriter of Zodiac, sorry) and Guy Busick, who must both satisfy fans and attract a new audience.

Finally, if the original cast (Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette) is present, it is set back to make room for a new generation. But, to our great surprise, what could have been a disaster is actually the real strength of this fifth installment. Because who says Scream, also says Stab, the film franchise in the film based on the events of the first installment and inspired by a book written by one of the characters (meta, we tell you).

And it is this bond with Stab that allows both the writers and the new characters to make fun of the saga, but also to cry out their love for him. Despite the 26 years that separate the first and this new episode, scream 5 is a clever, surprising, very violent and strangely moving homecoming. Where, through certain dialogues, Wes Craven cried out his love for the horror cinema that he was particularly fond of (and to which he contributed very largely), Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett cry out their love to Wes Craven, and to the so-called slasher genre, which disappeared from our screens a few years ago. Jordan Peele, and his cerebral horror cinema, takes it (kindly) for his rank.

In the end, while it could have been one episode too many, this new generation Scream stands out as the best episode since the original, no more and no less. A real tour de force that rewards fans for their loyalty. And which brings enough good ideas to justify a possible Scream 6. We cross fingers. ? AM

Ouistreham

Inspired by the story of Florence Aubenas (Ouistreham wharf), Emmanuel Carrère’s film cautiously breaks away from it by fictionalising it. If through Marianne Winckler (Juliette Binoche), a famous author who steps into the shoes of a job seeker, the film denounces like the book the curses of precarious work, it dramatizes the links between Marianne and her colleague Christèle (fantastic Hélène Lambert almost in his own role). From this risky enterprise, Carrère draws a bitter film on the daily life of cleaning workers: humiliating training, chain cleaning of toilets, handling of too heavy scrubber driers, insults from small bosses calling them ?cretins?, ?marries- sluts?? It becomes even more unbearable when Marianne starts cleaning the Caen-Ouistreham ferry before dawn. In this moving maritime space, symbolic of contemporary distress (migrants are in the background), she nonetheless forges strong and sometimes even joyful relationships with her comrades.

It is in this choral portrait that the film touches the most, revealing real everyday heroines: Christèle, Justine and Nadège, the forewoman who closes the film by discovering Marianne’s book: ?what you wrote is the truth?. A sentence with a particular echo when you know the relationship that the writer Carrère maintains with reality and fiction. A sentence that also forms a loop after the ?Sometimes I lie?, confessed at the beginning of the film by Marianne to Cédric met at Pôle emploi. But the writer’s double game undoubtedly harms the viewer’s empathy, unlike the recent series maid, adaptation on Netflix of the memoirs of Stéphanie Land, a young mother who became a cleaning lady to survive in poor America. ?J.G.
