There he dedicated himself to playing the guitar and doing his little things while accumulating a large complete vinyl collection that includes Handel’s own Messiah among more contemporary artists such as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Bee Gees and Ravi Shankar.
Now the apartment has been renovated as a museum dedicated to the two icons of music. The upstairs bedroom has been restored to Hendrix’s exact taste, with bohemian rugs, intricate tapestries on the walls, and retro pots throughout. But the most important thing is that very important vinyl collection.

We recently moved there to see restoration work and listen to Hendrix’s personal record collection. For this we use the turntable that Handel House Trust – the organization that owns the museum – has installed in the room the turntable of what is perhaps the best electric guitarist of all time: an original Bang & Olufsen Beogram 1000 from the 60s connected to a LEAK amp and two refurbished Lowther speakers. According to the Handel House Trust, it is “a very expensive and powerful setup for the time.”
Hendrix listened to the music at full blast, until the house shook from the vibrations. His girlfriend at the time, Kathy Etchingham, told Handel House Trust technicians that they had to “hit half penny taped to the turntable arm … otherwise it would jump up and down as the volume turned up. “
In fact, Hendrix liked to listen to music at such power that they had to repair the speakers multiple times. In fact, even though they were beefed up, there were times when the speakers would stop working in the middle of their full blast parties.

The heat of the analog
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to test this classic (and overpriced) stereo like Hendrix would have, but at least we were able to turn it up quite high while browsing through the extensive catalog of Hendrix-owned vinyl.
The audio quality is simply excellent despite the age of the devices. Complex sounds like that of a distorted guitar sound powerful and complex, with the analog warmth that only an old turntable can provide.
Logically, apart from the sound, listening to the Hendrix records at full blast among the musician’s personal effects – a robe, a large stuffed animal, ashtrays full of cigarette butts – as he listened to them decades ago, was an impressive experience.

But aside from the ecstasy of mythomania, it was an experience that shows that if you have one handy, you shouldn’t discard old audio gear. On the contrary: these devices were built to last and some, like this B&O, were designed with the same precision as a mechanical watch.

With the rise of the internet, these ?virtual communities? are all over. My favorite example of this is Reddit. If you?re not familiar with Reddit, go give it a spin. There?s a sub-reddit thread for quite honestly everything you can think of. It enables groups of people who share common goals and interests to connect with one another and have discussions about the subjects they?re passionate about.
In Henry Jenkins? ?Convergence Culture,? we get a really great in depth look at how these new technologies are changing the way we associate with one another. He had a great quote that really resonated with me, on how despite the fact that ?media technologies have expanded the range of available delivery channels, enabled consumers to recirculate content in powerful new ways?there has been an alarming concentration of ownership of commercial mainstream media.?
Every one of us has the capability to reach an audience or become a part of a community with the devices in our pockets; it?s the tactics we use that set us apart as journalists.
