The old canning manufacturers have been replaced by modern billion-dollar companies such as Ardo and Greenyard, which supply the whole world with fresh-frozen vegetables from Flemish fields.
A mild climate, fertile soil and a short logistics chain that guarantees that the vegetables can be processed within two hours after harvesting for optimum quality. The West Flemish vegetable growers had what the super investor Warren Buffet would call a ‘wide moat’. A wide moat that deters all challengers. The competition from Poland lost out to the consistent West Flemish quality, the growers in Spain are focusing on other, more southern vegetables such as peppers and tomatoes.
Explosive cost increases But the explosion in the costs of agricultural inputs is also affecting vegetable growers mercilessly, says INGRO manager Luc De Waele. INGO is a cooperative growers’ association for frozen vegetables, representing some 1,200 farmers who together supply around 510,000 tons of vegetables, accounting for a turnover of 105 million euros. Cooperatives such as INGO negotiate three-way contracts with the industry, acting as an intermediary between the growers and the industry.
INGRO had the cost increase calculated for 2022 compared to 2021, together with cultivation supervisors from TACO, but also from the industry itself. The cracking of supply chains and the explosive cost increases of all fossil derivatives such as fertilizers are driving costs for growers up sharply. ?The prices of fertilizers have tripled from 200 euros per tonne in the 2020-2021 season to 600 euros per tonne today. For potassium we are talking about a doubling of about 250 euros to 500 euros per ton?, says De Waele, ?For arable crops, this means a cost increase of almost 220 euros per hectare for a crop such as spinach and almost 250 euros for carrots. In percentage terms, we speak of a 21 percent higher cost for spinach and 12 percent more expensive carrots.?
The Polish workers that we have relied on for a long time no longer come to Flanders, there is enough work for them in Poland.
For intensive crops such as cauliflower and Brussels sprouts, the figures are even more spectacular: for cauliflower, the cost of fertilizers increases by 265 euros per hectare or almost doubles. Brussels sprouts even cost almost 400 euros extra. They are two of the most important crops for INGRO growers. The intensive crops also achieve higher turnovers: up to 8,000 euros per hectare for cauliflowers and even more for Brussels sprouts, courgettes and leeks, but the downside is that many more hours of work go into the crops.
Expensive labour, few reserves Finding suitable seasonal workers is also becoming increasingly difficult. De Waele: ?The Polish workers we have relied on for a long time no longer come to Flanders, there is enough work for them in Poland. If we find any seasonal workers, it will be people from Romania or Bulgaria, but they do not yet have the same productivity as the Poles. For cauliflowers and Brussels sprouts, we are always talking about an increase in labor costs of 250 euros per hectare. We are 11 percent more expensive for both crops than last year.?
From the Numbers of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, it appears that the growers for the vegetable industry have not exactly had farming years behind them. For the past four years, the drought has weighed on the yields and their income after deduction of their own labor has been negative. De Waele: ?Farmers often don’t look at their own hours, but that is of course not viable economically. The risks of the trade are that the weather can turn bad, but in recent years no reserves have been built up. In practice, this means that many of our growers are eating up the capital in their own business. If the cost increases cannot be passed on, then I have a gloomy outlook for vegetable cultivation in West Flanders.?
Industry has to think about the future ?Like everywhere in agriculture, our growers have to be damn good at math to remain farmers. The quality requirements of the industry are high, and those who skimp on costs run the risk of ending up with rejected or lower-valued products,? says De Waele. changing regulations. The hilarious comedy followed the lives of six very different students, Vod, Oregon, Josie, Kingsley, JP and Howard, who were forced to live together off campus at the fictional Manchester Medlock University.

Created by Peep Show writers Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain, Fresh Meat saw the unlikely housemates partying and hanging out without much study.
The cast was made up of a mix of established stars, including Jack Whitehall and In Betweeners star Joe Thomas, and relative newcomers, many of whom have become hugely successful.
Since the show ended in 2016 after four seasons, the six main cast members have landed some big jobs, including in Hollywood and enjoying romances with A-list actors.

Zawe Ashton

She was more interested in drinking and drugs than in real work, and always seemed to be carefree, until it gradually became clear that she had actually worked hard to get her place in college and was afraid of failure.
Since Fresh Meat, Zawe’s career has taken off.
She starred in The Handmaid’s Tale, was the lead character in Netflix’s horror movie Velvet Buzzsaw, and will play a villain in next year’s The Marvels comic book movie.
Zawe has been dating Hollywood actor Tom Hiddleston since 2019, after they appeared together on the London show Betrayal as a married couple.
They now live together in Atlanta.
Charlotte Ritchie ? Oregón

She had an affair with her sleazy teacher, Professor Shales, but was a huge fan of his wife Jean and also started dating their son Dylan.

Charlotte Ritchie was relatively unknown when she appeared in Fresh Meat, but in 2015 she joined the cast of Call The Midwife as nurse Barbara Gilbert.
Fans were devastated in 2018 when his character was dramatically killed off when he died of septicemia caused by meningitis.
Charlotte has since starred in the BBC’s hit comedy Ghosts and also appeared in Netflix’s Feel Good alongside Mae Martin.
Charlotte and Mae are rumored to be partners off-screen as well, but they have never confirmed or denied it.
Kimberley Nixon ? Josie

“I don’t even know what he looks like, how he looks like. I don’t know. Because he left my mother from me when I was six months and five months old. So I have no idea at all,” he added.

Before converting to Islam, Reza Rahadian’s childhood was filled with activities that were usually carried out in his previous religion, namely Christianity, such as Sunday school.

Extremely successful Estonian band Trad.Attack! has been transforming the view of folklore for many years. The now well-known trio has gone a step further and invited ten leading European musicians and DJs to reshape the look of Trad.Attack! Among them are three Czech names, the electronic duo Brothers, producer and DJ Kewu and multi-instrumentalist and composer Omnion. Trad.Attack! are one of the most important Estonian bands in recent years. It is based on Estonian folklore and folk songs, to which they add a rock drive and translate them into modern musical language. After the release of their debut album in 2015, they became rock stars in Estonia within a few days, and concerts around the world were not long in coming. Their latest album, on which they are increasingly experimenting with harder guitar sound as well as electronics, was shortlisted for the Grammy. The idea to create a remix album came up after a debate among themselves: “During the discussions about music and the business around it, we finally got to the point where we were addressing how to reach new goals, which we think is the audience in music. We were looking for a way to reach people who haven’t heard our music yet and for various reasons. they probably wouldn’t have heard it at all.
